Default Trip Around the World - on point

My late great-aunt made a beautiful Trip Around the World quilt circa 1955--all hand cut, pieced and quilted. I would like to make a copy of it, but I can't find any modernized instructions on how to make efficient strip sets that would suit this particular pattern:
    • 7 sets of color groups with 4 patterns in each
    • continuous patches not separated by solid fabric fields
    • set on point with a startiing with a single row of 5 in the center
    • the border is the bias-bound zigzag edge of the outermost color

I modeled it in Excel, calculated likely yardages for the 28 different fabrics, and identified the five central symmetrical starting strips, but now I'm stuck. Where do I go from here?

Hi Jo! Welcome to the quilt board! I"m sure you will get some great advice from others, but to get you started here are a couple of links to free patterns.

    http://quiltville.com/tatwpf.html
    http://ludlowquiltandsew.co.uk/free-...quilt-pattern/

I did a google search for free patterns and it also showed several YouTube video tutorials that you might check out as well.

Welcome from Ontario, Canada. If you want different rounds of colours, I don't think you can do strip sets.

Welcome to the board. I love your design and can't wait to see the finished project.

My thoughts on making it happen:

Perhaps thinking in bargello terms would be helpful. I've never made a Quilt Around the World, so can't say for sure. My quick thinking that 4 groups of 7 coordinate fabrics would make 4 sets of 7 fabric strips. After that, I think the difficulty would be putting the sets together in the right order.

However, I will once again point out that I have no experience with the Quilt Around the World pattern, and have only made a table runner sized bargello quilt.

Could you post a photo of the original?

Your version of the quilt is referred to as Boston Commons. If you need more direction maybe a search for Boston Commons patterns will offer some help.

This tutorial has two versions. The square version is called Grandmother’s dream; the rectangular version Boston Commons. Maybe with the addition of 3 elongating rows this would replicate your quilt.

Tradition with a Twist by Blanche Young has detailed instructions for this version of trip around the world. I bought the book because of the Blooming Nine Patch pattern but I intend to make several other quilts from the book.
