Look for the "Magic 8" method. There is a free pattern in Craftsy, which I think is the same one Eleanor Burns uses. You make 8 HSTs at a time with no papers. I cut my beginning squares slightly oversized and trim to size using the Eleanor Burns Triangle Square Up ruler. I like this ruler the best, because e you trim before you open the HSTs up, so you only have to trim two sides.

I don't buy the paper. It's easy to make my own with pencil and ruler.

You're welcome. I posted this tutorial because she has the chart I use for making HST's
which is 1" bigger instead of 3/4" for each HST so it can easily be trimmed.

This is what I do as well. I cut at 1" over finished size and trim. It's the perfect application for a rotating mat. I've done the thangles and don't feel I get any better accuracy (and sometimes less) than the oversize/trim method.

I cut squares that are exactly 7/8 bigger than the finished size needed, draw the diagonal line on the light square with a brown Pigma pen (it has a fine tip and won't run), then draw a quarter inch line on each side of the diagonal line. After putting the 2 squares right sides together and sewing exactly on the quarter inch lines, cut on the diagonal line, and have 2 perfect HST's.

I know I should be able to just sew a quarter inch on each side of the line without marking, but it's never worked for me.
