    I would sew together to make the correct size. I have done this with mistakes and shortage of fabric to correct. Once quilted you will not notice,

    I think you should go with what you feel most comfortable with - everyone has a different level of "perfection" or what is "good enough". What would bother you might not bother me and what would bother me might be ok with you. Good luck.

    I would use a co-ordinating fabric for those two extras and, in fabric pen, write a mom to son special note in one and the occasion/name of quilt/date on the other. Personalize it just for him. It'll look like you planned it that way!

    If you have enough of the original fabric to add the necessary length to each of the short rectangles I would just match the design up as much as you can when doing so and not worry about it. Nobody but you is going to notice that extra seam. I do it frequently with no problems.

    I would piece it to make the correct size. I have an old quilt from my husband's grandma. She pieced tiny squares to get a full square.
