I pre-wash everything, so pre-cuts don't make much sense for me. I have worked with a few layer cakes, when the piece needed was not a 10" square. I found fat quarter bundles very hard to resist when I first started quilting, but I've learned to assess fabrics individually, rather than being swayed by the attractiveness of the collection as a whole. The Fabric Moratorium thread (in the Quilting Challenges section) has really helped me become less of an impulse buyer. So at this point in my quilting journey, it's yardage for me.
