How do you figure what to charge someone for making a quilt or purse? Some just ask me to make a baby quilt and another one to make a purse but Im not sure what to charge beside the fabrics?? Can QB members give me some idea what they charge or suggestion would be great. Anxious to see what everyone has to say.

The "standard" for craft shows is 3X the cost of materials. I never charge that for purses. I know I price mine too cheaply, but I enjoy making them. I figure if I cover the cost of materials plus a few extra $ I'm good. Of course, I'm not in it to really make money. I guess I would figure how long it would take to make and the cost of materials and then go from there. Once they find out just the cost of materials they may not want to pursue it.

This comes up all the time. I have heard the 3x cost of materials before, and I do believe that some people use that as a guideline, but to me it doesn't make sense. The work in making a quilt is the same whether I use $4 fabric from my stash or $12 fabric new from the quilt store. Should I charge $12 for making one quilt, and $36 for the other?

If you want to make the quilt, then come up with a figure that you think is fair to you. It is up to the buyer to determine whether that figure is acceptable to her. Don't be surprised if the buyer suddenly realizes that the quilt will cost more than she is able or willing to pay.
