The 1/4 inch with guide on my Janome is not a scant 1/4. I think the guide rocks the foot to the right and that makes it more. As long as I'm doing blocks for myself, it usually works fine because I have consistent seams. If I have to make a block to an exact measurement to match a friends block, I don't use it, I use masking tape on the machine bed. So I love it for me, not for sharing with others. :)

I have a Juki with the compensating foot and a 1/4" foot w/the guide for my Babylock Jane. I don't worry about a scant 1/4" seam. So far I haven't made a quilt where the scant 1/4" is seam is needed. I do try to make a consistent seam and that is it.

I love my foot with the guide, however, I need to adjust my needle position. Remember that if you find your scant 1/4" for a project, then change anything for the next project, such as fabric or thread weight, you should recheck your needle position as it may need to be changed.
Remember that you don't really measure the seam, you measure the resultant patch.

I don't have a guide on my old Bernina 1/4" foot. I didn't like the guide on the quilting foot because it always moved so easily.

I've been teaching my 8 year old grandson, and that 1/4" foot sure has made it easier.

I have both kinds and prefer the plain one.

A word to those not in the know; viking has two 1/4" presser feet! One is for quilters and I have no clue who the other is for! Make sure when purchasing a presser foot with guide for a viking, you specify that you are a quilter! Also verify that a regular viking employee is the one selling you the correct presser foot.

I love my 1/4 inch foot with the guide on my Janome and I do believe my accuracy improved greatly. I have used it for years. I ignore scant 1/4 inch directions. I just don't get why you have to do that.

No guide for me - I use a 1/4 inch foot without a guide sometimes, but most of the time, I just use my regular J foot with the needle moved over. I tried using the foot with guide when I got it with my Symphony, but it gets in the way of my sight line, and if you use pins it is just plain in the way. I couldn't get used to it at all.

I have both , with and without guide. I found I can sew faster with the guide. I also found I can sit back and not hunch over so much with the guide. The opening on the foot allows me to move the needle position for the scant 1/4 inch.
