I find the trouble with the guided foot is when doing any pieces with dog ears....they seem to get hung up on that guide.....I only use it if I am going to do a lot of straight seam stitching...anything else.....regular 1/4" foot

Great information. I have a Slimpicity and I can only move my needle to the right or left. Are there machines that the needles move more than that? I use the outside of my foot and I seem to get a true 1/4" seam and it works fine as long as I pay attention all the way to the end. When I have to try for a scant I am not sure what to do. Any help would be appreciated. How do you cover the feed dogs? Thanks for the thread. BrendaK

Me too! For long seams/chain piecing it's great, but for awkward and bulky items I prefer the plain one.

Thanks so much for all your help. I think I'll just stick to my regular 1/4 foot. The one with the quide is $35 and I would hate to spend so much and not like it.:sew::wave:

My 1/4 foot has the guide, and I like it. I also adjust the needle position.

I think it must be a personal thing. I learned to quilt with the one with the guide...only four years ago...and I found myself pushing my fabric up against the guide and not realizing it. That made for a larger than 1/4 seam, or so it seemed. I bought a foot without a guide, and it works way better for me. I think I just pay attention better?

Viking has several 1/4" feet. The one with the guide AND the wide needle hole will allow you to move the needle over to make a "scant" 1/4". For a regular 1/4", there is a stitch (depending on your machine) - I think it is the first stitch option in the in the section that has all the quilting stitches.

I use the guide with both of my machines. It gives me a consistent seam.

I have the foot with the guide. I love it. I usually forget to adjust my needle position for a scant 1/4 seam but it helps me be consistent so when I'm not sewing anything that requires a scant seam I'm good. It took time but now I don't smash my fabric up against the guide. I more or less use it to keep myself in control so I'm not ripping out a thousand wobbly seams lol.

I had wobbly seams and discovered the guide made a huge difference for me. I also bought a machine where I could adjust the sewing speed. Now I love to piece.
