An amazing thing happened to me yesterday at the big JoAnne's sale. I was at the cutting table next to a woman that had a cart overflowing with novelty cottons. I asked if she was a quilter, and she said no, that she makes kid's sheets for a living. I told her that I like the novelty fabrics to make charity quilts with. She asked me if I wanted scraps from her fabrics, and I said Yes..Yes..Yes!!! So we meet this morning and I end up with over 15 pounds of scraps that are triangles that will produce at least a 3" square. Hundreds and hundreds of scraps!! Yippee!!!! Now, do you wonderful ladies and gents have any ideas of what I can do with them? Nothing fancy--I would like simple but fun ideas for the charity quilts. I am so lucky to have found this free source of fabric and I want to make this generous lady proud.

What about light-dark half square triangles?
Diamond-in-a-square? |

How about little Irish Chain quilts. They are quick and easy and are so much cuter than plain squares.

I know how you feel, my good fortune was meeting a lady who had antique quilt tops that no one in her family wanted; and no one in my family passed down anything much less quilts!
I have two quilts that I want to try for charity quilts, one from our forum and the other is from Art Gallery Quilts. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-15750-1.htm using a block called Gretchen. The other you will have to give your email address to get the pattern. http://www.artgalleryfabrics.com/projects/index.shtml The pattern is featuring Girly Girl Collection. You might be able to look at the picture and figure out how its made without getting the pattern. It's similar to a snowball block with only two opposing sides squared off, then the four smaller sections are pieced together to form octagon-shaped block. Hope these give you some ideas. Chris |
Wow, that was some trip to Joann's!!!!!!!!!!! :D
I'm happy for you!!! |
Wow, what good advice. I forgot about Bonnie Hunter, the scrap queen! Thanks for all of the advice so far, and I will definitely post pics. Right now I am sorting, sorting, sorting! Please keep the advice coming!

Wow your lucky day :D

You hit Gold, I love scraps, sorting them out. Take some photos.
|
WOW, 15 pounds. You'll be busy.
|
Just have fun and let your creativity go wild!

Check out "Quilts for Kids" -- great easy patterns for charity quilts and also -- they will be grateful if you would like to make some for them!

There was a post here yesterday named:
"Finished "Crumb" Blocks Quilt" and it used scraps. It was beautiful. That would be a great way to use your scraps. It is quick/easy and would go together in no time. When you finish with 15 pounds of scraps and give the quilts away, you will make many people happy, that's for sure. |
What about a scrappy quilt quick and easy to do.

Sewn into squares, you could make some awesome prairie points with them too!!! What an fabulous gift you have been given!
Here is a tutorial on prairie points, just in case: http://quilting.about.com/od/quiltpa...rie_points.htm |
Talk about being at the right place at the right time!
Lucky you! |
I love this idea from a blog I ran across for a quilt called Bottled Rainbows:
http://www.stitchedincolor.com/2011/...w-to-make.html I would love to make one of these quilts but I don't have near enough scraps. Now I'm collecting them though, it will go on to-do list. It's QAYG which I also want to try. Have fun! |

If you make Bottled Rainbows be sure to post a picture. I'd love to see it.
|
What a grand thing for both of you to do. Her to give you the scraps and you to make quilts for those in need. I like the lady of the lake block but some think it is too complicated...it does require a bit of sewing. Just a thought...good luck!
|
Here is the latest link about Bottled Rainbows with lots of examples and a completed quilt:

Don't forget about flying geese! They chain into beautiful rainbows of colors too!
|
Something like a tumbler, but with the triangles you have instead of the tumbler shape would be cute--just sew the triangles in rows, alternating wide/narrow ends and light /dark, then trim if needed and sew in rows--quick and easy!
|
The crumb pattern sewn on a foundation piece of muslin or just sewn together gives a fast colorful block which can be done any size with no cutting and very little waste if you are trying to get lots of charity quilts.
You only have cutting and loss when squaring the blocks. Some groups make these with large and small pieces when doing charity work. |
Best deal from JoAnne's yet. Good for you have fun.
|
If they are big enough for 3" squares and are novelty prints perhaps you could make "I spy" quilts with narrow sashing between t he squares. I just made one with 5" squares but most of the prints were small enough that I could have used 3"squares.
