Years ago I saw in a Cloth World store a display of 2 pieces of denim. One was soft and the other regular stiff new denim. They said one was washed using CokeCola. Later I never sould find anyone in the store who knew what I was talking about. Any one here know about that?

I have seen those mesh bags that people make to take to the beach with "pet mesh" but I can't find it on line. Anyone know where I can get it? Thanks .....this is a very brainy and talented bunch.

I know Coke is powerful enough to dissolve some nails, so who knows!!!

littlehud 07-04-2010 09:08 AM

I have never heard of washing fabric with coke but looking at what it does to a penny is scary.

Twisted Quilter 07-04-2010 09:32 AM

I don't know the answer to your question, but my father used Coke to clean rust off his chrome bumpers when I was a child. I'm sure quite a few people here remember chrome bumpers on cars.

Nana2Sew 07-04-2010 09:34 AM

Answer to your second question.....the bag is "Screen Play Tote" by Nancy Ota patterns. Hope this helps!.......

oatw13 07-04-2010 09:37 AM

I have heard that washing the dark blue, really stiff denim jean with coke in the washer will soften the jeans right up. I guess it dissolves all the extra dye? I have also heard it can be used, along with detergent, to help loosen grease and oil stains in the wash.

I don't know about the "older folks" label, but a simple Google search yielded this info: http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf14381348.tip.html

What a relief to look at this post and realize I don't know the answers!

I hesitated to look, wondering if I wanted to classify myself as an "older folk".

I am currently making one of those tote bags. Isn't that a coincidence? My pattern is called The Tote & Go an comes in 2 sizes. It is available here: http://store.cottage-quilts.com/stor...3&Item_ID=8548

I got some blue mesh at a quilt store in Exton, PA called the Quilt Block. My youngest DD decided she wanted one also to take back to NZ. So I wanted more pet screen. I tried everywhere, but while the quilt shop in Exton had 5 colors, no LQS around had it. I called the lady in Exton and she said although, she doesn't normally ship, she would consider doing so if I couldn't find it anywhere. She did tell me that she had heard you could get Pet Screen, or nylon screen for repairing screens at hardware stores. I went to a local hardware store and found it in black, identical to the weight that I got at the LQS, And it was wider and cheaper. They only had it in black, but that is what my daughter wanted anyway. This store didn't call it pet screen, just nylon window screen replacement screen.

Hope this helps.

Those are nice bags!

Maggiesmom 07-04-2010 10:49 AM

If you want just black you can get the mesh screen at a hardware store.

I did the same thing. I was going to be mad if it referred to someone in their fifties.

Wait a minute! I'm in my fifties. I remember Cloth World. (I loved Cloth World and mourned when I heard Joann's bought it.) But I don't remember hearing anything about using Coke to soft denim. I was always told to wash jeans before you wear them to wash out the extra dye and if wanted them soft, use fabric softener.

Lilaciris 07-04-2010 08:19 PM

Here is a link for colored pet screen

Great colors, kinda pricey.

wvdek 07-04-2010 09:16 PM

Lol, guess I am part of the old ones. I remember Cloth World too. It was a lot nicer store I think than JA's is.
Don't remember teh Coke though. Whew, guess I am not that old. ;-)

I don't remember the coke either, but I DO remember cloth world. We actually had one in our mail....but...long gone!

Jingle 07-04-2010 09:18 PM

I never heard of washing denim in coke cola, In the fifties Truckers use to was bugs off their windshields, was the best for the job. Don't know if they still do or if window cleaners work better now. Could be younger Truckers don't know about it.

I pour a can of Coke in a big pot of dry pinto beans when I cook them. It gives the beans a flavor boost and suppose to ease the gassy part. I use Sprite or 7UP in white beans.

Delilah 07-04-2010 09:46 PM

My SIL found pet screen at Lowe's or Home Depot. She lives in an area that has NO fabric stores, let alone a quilt shop. A web search for pet screen might turn up something.

mzsooz 07-05-2010 12:01 AM

I remember Cloth World too! But the only thing I use Coke for is dissolve my stomach lining <tee hee>

Soaking your beans overnight first also removes the gassiness.

Holice 07-05-2010 04:35 AM

If coke will destroy fabric perhaps that is what the manufacturers use to wash those $100 jeans.

nursie76 07-05-2010 05:39 AM

I have used a can of coke in the crockpot as an ingredient to yummy BBQ.

Baloonatic 07-05-2010 06:01 AM

A window screen shop should be able to help you. There has been a demand for it locally here on the CA Central Coast in recent years so Betty's Fabrics carries it now, but it's more expensive than from the screen shop, and not as many colors.

martha jo 07-05-2010 06:14 AM

I remember a neighbor whose husband did real greazy work and his clothes were awful. She would wash them with a can of coke and they would come clean. no grease at all. They were really soft but I thought that was age.

sculpyfan 07-05-2010 07:25 AM

My sister was in the hospital recently and I heard the doctor outside the room talking to someone on the phone and she said "I have this elderly patient" and went on with enough details that I knew she was talking about my sister. She was 66 and I was 65. I looked at her and asked her if she was elderly and she said "I didn't used to think so but lately have begun to wonder". She is battling cancer. I told her she could be elderly but I wasn't. The nurse said "actually elderly is considered at 65." I still don't classify myself as elderly so wasn't meaning anything disrespectful to any of the "Young chicks" out there.

LeslieSkelly 07-05-2010 07:43 AM

Try http://creations-online.com/neatstuff/petscreen.htm for your petscreen. :-)

Yep, I am wiping my brow with relief also. lol

sculpyfan 07-05-2010 09:28 AM

Thanks to all who responded. Sometime just one word change nets great results. I found it at Erica's. It was 8.99 yard and she has it in colors. I have ordered from her before and she is prompt.

lucylockett 07-05-2010 09:41 AM

Sculpyfan, I'm sure no offense was taken. We're just having a bit of fun. I've heard that old is always 10 years older than you are. I have a friend who is 72 and she seems younger than some of my 50+ year old friends. To me old is when you start looking back more than looking forward.

I like what someone else said on this board, "I am what I am and I am happy!"

MadQuilter 07-05-2010 10:43 AM

Ohmygosh - I was only kidding. Hope you know that.

Last night I went through some old pictures and came face-to-face with my youth. Needless to say, I was wondering where that young chick had gone to.

wvdek 07-05-2010 11:48 AM

OOO, she called me a young chick. I'll take it ;-)

Weedwoman 07-05-2010 12:21 PM

I inherited a cast iron dutch oven w/lid and it was so rusty I wasn't sure if we'd ever be able to use it but letting it soak in straight coca cole for a few days and it was like new. Kinda scary that we drink the stuff, huh?
I wonder if it will harm our washing machines.......

cottagequilter 07-06-2010 05:24 AM

You can get the mesh for beach bags, etc. at the Quilted Cottage in Saginaw, MI. Their phone number is 989-790-3123 and their web site is: quiltedcottage.net It comes in all colors and they really make cute bags.

Jshep 07-06-2010 05:53 AM

I can't believe coke cola can be used for so many things. I have poured it on my car battery posts to remove the buildup.
