My 86 year old cousin just called me almost jumping up and down! She saw her 1st hummingbird this morning so she rushed around to get the sugar water outside for him to drink.
By next week she will probably have over 100 of them. She has ten of the tall feeders that she fills up every single day for them and they drink it all! Im glad she finds so much pleasure in them! She lives in the country and has had lots of birds come back every year for the last 5-10 years!

How wonderful!

I just love hummingbirds, my grandmother used to have a feeder outside her kitchen window and we would watch them in the morning while we were eating breakfast. Its such a fond memory

whinnytoo 04-14-2011 12:24 PM

WOW i thought we had alot of them, we get a dozen or so at a time......... would love to see the hundreds!

sewobsessed1 04-14-2011 12:51 PM

There is a migration map here:
http://www.hummingbirds.net/map.html

joanelizbay, your cousin (or you) can report your sightings there so people know where/how close they are to their area each year :)

Hummingbirds are such amazing creatures. I love feeding them and watching them flutter about.

fabric whisperer 04-14-2011 12:56 PM

we do the map ~ my daughter is very into ornithology! Time to get our feeders going again... we've been watching the other birds come back to our neighborhood, our cardinals and back, lots of chickadees & finches and tanningers, but haven't seen the RTH's yet... yay, they're on the way!

lisalisa 04-14-2011 12:59 PM

My husband used to drink Mountain Dew Code red and I'd take the flat leftovers, mix with water and viola! Hummingbird food! I soon came to realize you can use just about anything provided it's sweet and red.

Here's a webcam that you can watch hummingbirds. http://www.ustream.tv/hummingbirdnestcam

That is exciting. Got my feeders out since it has been so warm. Usually start seeing hummers first of May around here.

I saw my first this morning, too. (Close to Boonville, Indiana!)

Oh how neat, love hummingbirds, i have a picture of dh hanging up the feeder with one sitting on it, and another hovering nearby.

justwannaquilt 04-14-2011 02:45 PM

My kids love watching the hummingbird nest on Ustream!

Krystyna 04-14-2011 02:46 PM

What a treat. And delightful that she is so excited. I don't think I've ever seen one.

sueisallaboutquilts 04-14-2011 02:53 PM

To be 86 and still so enthused about life is great to hear!!!
Nature is a wonderful gift to all of us :)

Lindsey 04-14-2011 03:25 PM

I just bought a new feeder. can't wait to see one here in SE PA.. Also love the gold finches.

Jill 04-14-2011 03:49 PM

I can hardly wait for the first hummingbird to make its appearance. I usually put out my feeder about the middle of April, but last year didn't see one until May 4. I enjoy the gold finches too.

THanks for the post, just went and checked it out. Awesome

justlooking 04-14-2011 04:25 PM

Love hummingbirds too!

ncredbird 04-14-2011 05:07 PM

I was sitting on the ground weeding in the flower bed yesterday when my first hummingbird nearly ran into me. My husband broke into laughter and said "he's trying to tell you to get out the feeders". I did that first thing this morning and it didn't take him 5 minutes to find it. My 87 year old mother lives in BC, Canada and it is always a contest between us to see who spots the first one. Mother will have dozens of the little ones lined up to use her feeders. We don't seem to have that many here but it can get pretty exciting sitting on the front porch and having them use the covered porch as a highway to get to the feeder. The most I have seen here at one time is 6. This will be our second summer in this house so maybe activity will pick up since they know where we are now.

Mariposa 04-14-2011 05:27 PM

Neat!!

nett2 04-14-2011 06:52 PM

Here the hummingbirds usually come back around April 15th (last year it was the 20th) so I put the food out today to be ready for them. Love to watch them. We use to go thru almost 2 quarts a day but for the last few years we don't have so many. I guess there's more people feeding them.

Vat 04-15-2011 03:47 AM

We saw our first one on March 24, near Warrior, Alabama. I have only 4 feeders and have to keep them fill really often but really don't havve time for more.

stitchinwitch 04-15-2011 04:22 AM

How exciting! - and a reminder that I will have to get busy and put out a batch of food for them myself

WI Rose 04-15-2011 05:27 AM

They don't usually show up until May here, but I've gotten my feeders gathered up.

OdessaQuilts 04-15-2011 05:53 AM

How exciting for all of you birders. My folks have a feeder for the hummingbirds now that dad has finally eliminated the plant that was taking over his yard that they loved (can't recall the name of it! ugh!). They get a few, but I haven't seen them myself -- yet.

For those of you who really love hummers, try this link for some fantastic photos: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/933203

(I keep it so that some day ... when I get really crazy ... I can design a quilt with an image like one of these ...... ahhhh, the daydreams of quilters!)

Heartwarming quilts 04-15-2011 07:07 AM

That is so cool. I too watch and wait not for humming birds but for swallows (humming birds are here year round)

I have two one in the front of the house and one in the back of the house. We are in their migration path and they stop here in the Hill Country of Texas every year. They send out a scout to find food and if Iam outside on the back porch when he arrives, they buzz around my head to say where's the food. My two feeders look like an airport terminal with they coming and going.

davis2se 04-15-2011 07:44 AM

Reminds me of a dear friend in Michigan who SWEARS that the first humming bird of the season shows up at her house on the same date every year, and always within 1/2 hour of the same time. Not sure I'm buying that, but she refuses to do anything or go anywhere on that particular date.

grammysharon 04-15-2011 07:50 AM

Lucky her, hummers are so beautiful! :D

pieces 04-15-2011 08:39 AM

HIP! HIP! HOORAY!
I put my feeder out Thursday afternoon and I saw my first
hummer this morning too. (Friday).
So they must be on their way!
We probably have 30-40 hummers around here.
I have shrubs and perennials planted for them as well. :-)

gramquilter2 04-15-2011 08:51 AM

No hummingbirds here just a foot of new snow!

joanelizbay 04-15-2011 09:20 AM

I just talked to my cousin and she said shes only seen a couple of "scouts" so far but one came and kept pecking on her kitchen window as if to say WHERE is my food?? :) She can go outside and sit real still and they will land on her shoulders and arms. The lst time I saw ALL of them it was kind of scary because the food is on the deck you have to walk up to get to the front door and they were making a really loud buzzing and fighting over the feeders. She ONLY has ten big feeders! :) She also feeds the orioles but there aren't near as many of them! Thanks for all the wonderful posts about these lovely creatures!

Poakie 04-15-2011 10:07 AM

My husband and I we feed the hummingbirds all summer long but we never have more than a dozen. Would love to see a hundred of them.

Julianna 04-15-2011 10:37 AM

We had territorial hummingbirds in Colorado - rufus- and they would dive bomb others to stay away from their feeder. So we had some on different sides of the house. One night I forgot to take one in from the deck. I woke up when I heard glass breaking. On our deck was a baby bear licking up the sweet liquid. I thought he was so cute I would get a photo. Then my brain turned on and reminded me that since he was so young his Momma was probaboy very close by. She would not appreciate flashes. So I did get a long shot through the door. Anyway our mailboxes were all in a group about a mile down the mountain and I saw a note on the bulletin board about a mother bear and cub sited in our neighbors yard last night. It said it was odd to see only one cub so I added to it and said I knew where the other one was! :)

Iamquilter 04-15-2011 11:25 AM

I got my juice ready, but afraid to put it out as it may freeze tonight. I thought we had spring, but it sure is cold and windy today.

loreen 04-15-2011 11:35 AM

I told the DH last week I needed to get the feeders out. I did not do it because i was to busy quilting. i will have to do it this weekend.

kwhite 04-15-2011 11:39 AM

LOL our neighbor spent several hundred dollars a few years ago buying everything he could think of to attract hummingbirds and they took up residence in our mimosa tree. He was as mad as a hornet at us?!?! Like we sent them an invitation or something. I think he gave up after that. LOL. They are fun little things though.

Homemother 04-15-2011 12:17 PM

She must be thrilled! Hummingbirds are so fascinating to watch! Bless her for taking care of them! She gets her reward for doing so! :-D

TerryQuilter 04-15-2011 12:35 PM

I love hummingbirds. Would love to have feeders, but we are in a neighborhood of cats and I would really be upset if the cats got to them.
