2022- What are your quilting goals?

I look forward to hearing what your goals are for 2022!

My goals for 2022 are more or less the same. I have decided that I will no longer allow my stash to stress me out! I will take the time to enjoy the process. This year I actually made a list of the patterns I wanted to do and it helped with the indecision of “ what next”? I pulled 15 patterns and chose from them throughout the year.

Old Goals: 2021

1: Work more with EQ8- I am getting there! I have enrolled in an online class and I am making progress.

2: Back a quilt with Minky- Not even close!

3: Make a paper pieced quilt. Did not even get near that, however, I would like to attempt at least a table runner.

New Goals:

1: Become more proficient with Auto Pilot. I am certainly more confident in using it. Coming from Pro-Sticher, The ease of Autopilot can take getting use to.

2: Learn a new technique. I hope hand embroidery counts.

3: Use more scraps. See #3 above.

4: Spend more time learning about color. I have spent more time with my color wheel, stash and online videos about color, to me its fascinating.

5: Spend more time quilting. I got far more quilts done this year than I did last year.

Never Ending Goals:

1: Organization- Getting stash more organized by color, they are loosely sorted and it’s pretty easy to find what i’m looking for, but it does need work.

2: Winning the lottery - Still has not happened despite my efforts!

Actually finish a few quilts that I started years ago.

Part with some of my sewing machines. I gave one of my favorites to my granddaughter on Sunday. Hope she appreciates that I was parting with one of my "pets".

lindaschipper 12-14-2021 05:06 AM

Making a list of the patterns I really truely want to make in 2022, pulling the fabric for them and making kits. Then honestly selling off or giving away so much of the fabric that I will never use. I may even sell the quilting frame at some point and maybe selling one of my machines. With my back problems it's gotten harder and harder to sit and sew.

Snooze2978 12-14-2021 05:41 AM

Would love if I could quilt all the quilts I've got hanging up waiting to be quilted so far which is around 12 large ones. Finish piecing the 5 I've got started already and get them finished completely and make a couple scrappy quilts for the New Hope Auction as the money helps keep the homes open for those less fortunate with disabilities. Would surely downsize my scrapes at least.

sewingpup 12-14-2021 05:42 AM

I am going to stitch up everything in my stash! OK, let's get real. I am going to stitch up the amount of fabric I can and only buy enough to maintain my stash as is. seriously, my goal is to stitch up more fabric than I buy. And finish at leasst 5 of the UFO's I have.

SusieQOH 12-14-2021 06:41 AM

Lisa, great topic!
This year I made a lot of quilts. Many were sent out to my longarmer because I don't devote time to getting more proficient in machine quilting.
So that's my goal in 2022! I keep saying it and then I'm off piecing another quilt haha
On a happy note: this year I've used a lot more stash than before and that feels good. I usually purge around the 1st of January and intend to do that again. It's helped me a lot staying more organized. I dislike looking at fabrics I know I'll never use.

sewingitalltogether 12-14-2021 07:06 AM

That’s funny. I was just trying to organize my plan for 2022. Good grief did I say 2022? Ok, well AP&Q has a print out page that I want. It’s a UFO list and a group to join. Not joining the group but I think I will tape up my list of UFO’s. It’s about 15. Didn’t make any progress this year but would like to throw myself into it next year. It’s really hard not to start new quilts. They draw me in with excitement. But I have too many big projects started.
On the exciting side I bought a used book last night. Love paying $5 for a $30 quilting book. Got it from www.abebooks.com. I bought Chuck Nohara’s 2001 New Patchwork Patterns. Paid quite a bit more than $5. Have wanted it for a long time. Hard to find. Out of print. It’s in Japanese, coming from Japan. Won’t get here until March. Anyone else excited about Chuck Nohara?

toverly 12-14-2021 07:17 AM

My goal is the same as last year and I did it in 2021. Finish 12 quilts. One a month is the goal but that doesn't always work. It's not as difficult as it sounds, I have way too many flimsies. I just have to make myself sandwich and quilt one a month. It helps that my Guild has a "Get -R-Done" competition. We can list up to 20 quilts to finish. They don't have to be flimsies, it can just be fabric purchased to make a quilt.

oksewglad 12-14-2021 07:54 AM

1. Don't we all want to use the fabric in our stashes first? For me a never ending goal!
Not necessarily in this order!
2. Finish the wonky star Qsized quilt
3. Finish the Star quilt for my friend
4. Make graduation quilts for 2 Granddaughter's
5. Work on my WIP's
a. Joyce made me do it
b. HST quilt
c. OMG
d. Time to Commit
e. Fragments
f. Abilene
6. Baby quilt for a fund raiser
7. Mini quilts for 3 fundraisers
The list could go on and on!
Good luck everyone!

SuzSLO 12-14-2021 08:43 AM

I feel very good about my progress as a quilter in 2021: I finished 2 quilts that were UFOs from the 1990s and quilted a top I inherited from my Great Great Aunt. I started and completed 5 more quilts, which means no new UFOs. I completed HollyAnne Knight’s Free Motion Quilting Academy, which makes it more likely I can finish my quilts. I do still have a tote bag to make out of the Kona color panel I got in a grab bags of fabrics, which will likely be a 2022 project.

For 2022, my goal is to not add to the UFOs, which means piecing and quilting the 3 I just started, as well as quilting a top I started decades ago. I also have another top that I inherited from my Great Great Aunt to quilt and a few more ancient UFOs. And I’m going to QuiltCon in February, which should be a lot of fun.

Reader1 12-14-2021 09:18 AM

I have fabric for two quilts that I have not started. After Christmas I plan to start one, complete it and then complete the other. Following that my quilting goals are the same as always, continue to learn, accept minor mistakes that I cannot change, and be bold enough to try patterns that call to me.

I love that!

1. Live one day at a time. We're moving when the house sells. So don't know what will be happening on any single day.

2. Packing and repacking, found 2 UFO's that aren't going to our next house. So finish or rehome.

Have no idea how quickly we'll be in a new residence at the other end. We're no longer in control.

3. Finish packing

4. Enjoy the process.

5. Maybe do Merry mayhem.

Railroadersbrat 12-14-2021 12:30 PM

Hopefully, expand my sewing area so I can start using my floor frame. Reorganize and rearrange my sewing area so it's a more efficient way of sewing and then work on my UFOs. No big new projects until my UFOs are done.

sak658 12-14-2021 01:21 PM

I an so excited to start long arm quilting on my new Janome 16'" PRO on a 5 ft frame...that fits well in my sewing room..I have several tops of my Mother's that she did, and I have some that I have finished also...I need to get the leaders on the rails, and get the clear plastic to put down where the pantographs go...Merry Christmas to ME!! From ME!!

Karamarie 12-14-2021 01:54 PM

I would just like to continue using fabric I have in my stash to make gifts. I would also like to sell a few quilts. Good luck right?

b.zang 12-14-2021 03:14 PM

I will retire at the end of January and am eagerly awaiting the time to put into my first ever double wedding ring quilt. I'm a bit nervous and will probably be here looking for advice but am determined to gift my granddaughter a classic quilt for her wedding in September.

Mumto2 12-14-2021 06:38 PM

I have been stocking up on precuts this fall and need to sit down and make the quilts I envision with them. I only have a couple of true UFO’s at this house so am not feeling all that anxious to finish those. I need to finish the binding on an EPP project and keep setting it aside. I love EPP but find bing by hand tedious and only do it for EPP. A couple of flimsies need to be quilted that were recently assembled......

Next up on the list are a couple more Spell it with Moda quilts with some farm yard themed jelly rolls. Maybe a small many trip around the world with the left overs. I have charm packs, honeybuns, and the 10 inch squares ready and waiting. Also a couple of kits I bought cheap. So lots of things to play with!

I still have my 2 Harry Potter quilts in progress for my children. I think I have 11 blocks for each child done....planning on 16 with a back that has a few blocks on it. Harry and company need to go someplace to satisfy my sense of order and they have been deemed the boring part by both of my offspring! Kelli Fannon has started releasing the planned patterns again https://www.kellifanninquilts.com/p/...-sewalong.html and naturally my kids want a couple of the not yet released in their quilts! I would love to get these finished in 2022 as they are taking up a surprising amount of space in my really limited fabric storage area.

Jingle 12-14-2021 07:08 PM

Same as last year. Make as many donation quilts for the foster kids in my county.

I only made 19 this year. I hope to make more in 2022.

copycat 12-15-2021 02:37 AM

Make a baby quilt for grandson due in June.
Finish a Fall Art wall-hanging from 3 yrs ago.
Donate Quilting books I no longer use to the library fundraiser.
Begin quilts for my 2 sons.
Go through my fabric and give away what I don't like anymore.
Declutter my sewing space...too many dust catchers.
So something Quilt related every day. Oh...I already do that, I wake up each morning and read this Quilting Board!:)

Stitchnripper 12-15-2021 03:23 PM

My goals are always the same. I quilt for my own pleasure. Sometimes the quilts go to a new home. I don’t have a stash but I have a lot of scraps. To me it is an enjoyable hobby so I roll with mojo waxes and wanes. Sometimes I like to try a new technique or get a new gizmo.

maryb119 12-15-2021 04:55 PM

My main goal is to do something with my overflowing scrap box. Please don't tell me to buy a bigger box....I already did and it's still overflowing!

RedGarnet222 12-15-2021 05:26 PM

This last year has been purging and cleaning and redoing my entire household. It has been a process and I am finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. We have been here twenty years and the paint and furnishings had to be updated. The cabinets needed new lining down and to clear anything out that was not being used. I also went through my clothes and got rid of anything I couldn't or would not wear. (Hubby's too) Same for my sewing/quilting patterns. All of the drawers and cabinets were cleared and cleaned of anything I did not think I would use. So, what does hubby do? Buys me a new sewing machine and sewing desk. I think I might just break down the second bedroom we use as a spare and set my long arm up in there. That would give me the room to set up the new machine and keep my favorite workhorse where it is. After all, I would rather pay for a hotel room than have house guests anyway. I know it sounds bad, but rarely do we have company stay with us anymore. It is because I am getting too old to care and cook for visiting guests, I suppose.
Twice I have fallen down a planted hill in our back yard and jammed myself so badly that it took months to heal. I am seriously thinking of hiring the heavy work done a few times a season to keep it up.
Now, I think I can get back to my quilting soon. Mostly charity donations, but, some family newborns and sibling gifts. I have seventeen tops and backs ready to quilt. Finish those and make charity items.

IrishNY 12-15-2021 05:51 PM

Finish baby quilt for my 18 month old granddaughter ().
Make quilts for granddaughter due in January and grandchild due in July.
Become proficient on my longarm with lots of practice
Make some quilts just because I like the pattern and fabric, not for someone.

Plus sell our NC house in the spring and figure what will fit in TN house and what to do with the rest of it. Furniture, I mean. Everything in the sewing studio will be moving. :)

I'm retiring in June (can't believe it's really happening!) and am so looking forward to having enough time to quilt for pleasure and not because I am trying to keep up with my very prolific family.

NZquilter 12-15-2021 07:03 PM

My goal is to quilt up at least nine quilt tops. I have three half quilted and six full size tops in the UFO drawer. And about 10 UFOs, unfortunately. My goal is to make 2022 a finishing yet. I know I say that every year!

Synnove 12-15-2021 07:13 PM

My quilting goal for 2022 is to continue making baby quilts for charity. I also turn the leaders and enders used in the piecing of the baby quilts to make quilts for my family. Win-win.

Mary.D 12-16-2021 02:37 AM

I've started to quilt a simple blanket a few months ago. My goal is to finish it.;)

PurplePansies 12-16-2021 02:53 AM

1. Stop buying every single thing that catches my eye when I'm looking through Pinterest or quilt sites.
2. Start making the quilts that I bought because they caught my eye on Pinterest or quilt sites.
3. Make twin size quilts for the VA hospital and the new VA apartments for homeless vets.
4. Do the daily exercises for my shoulder and back that I'm supposed to be doing so I can sit at my sewing machine longer and do items 1-3.
5. Have fun do what I love!

jmoore 12-16-2021 03:56 AM

B.zang, congratulations on your upcoming retirement…I hope it allows you more time to do the things you love.

sak658, what a wonderful gift to yourself…you’re sure to enjoy having a longarm in your own home. Looking forward to seeing some of your quilted projects.

I always post a list of quilting/sewing goals on a 12x18 poster board in my sewing room but I haven’t had the time to do it yet. I am in crunch mode trying to get a few Christmas projects done with only 9 days left. 🤪

2022 - Quilting Goals
1.Make quilts for three dear friends who have patiently been watching me make quilts for others.
a. pastel floral
b. mariner's star/compass
c. something blue ships or boats?
2. Make one of the kits that were given to me Start in January - Finish by..March
3. Sandwich and quilt three that have been hanging in the closet for a year (April Retreat project.)
4. Finish two WIP - (January and February)
5. Make 5 quilts from 2.5's for donation to Project Linus - fast and fun and get'r done!
6. Maintain an acceptable level of "neatness" in my sewing room. (Daily)
7. Make a list of patterns that I really want to make ( Soon, and include a, b, c. above)
8. Leave some time for spontaneous creation of quilts that are yet to be discovered.

Love this idea of setting specific goals. I will put the list in the front of my 2022 quilt history notebook and check off the finishes. Just printed a copy of my list. It will be interesting to check in from time to time and see everyone's progress.

juliasb 12-16-2021 05:29 AM

I have several quilting goals to get done.
1. Finish my niece's graduation quilt that is 3 years behind.
2. Make at least 4 quilts using my Accuquilt system
3. Complete 3 Boom (Block Swaps from this board) Quilts.
4. Clean and organize my sewing room.
5. Continue to work just from my stash
6. Repair The stack of quilts in the guest room
7. Have a stash bash where I take out all the fabrics in my stash and reorganize
them.
I may not get all of this completed but I will get a good start on many of these items.

I think that is enough.

aashley333 12-16-2021 06:19 AM

Bargello quilt is on my list.

rryder 12-16-2021 08:23 AM

my quilting goals for 2022:
1. I want to keep up with the decluttering that I started several years ago. To that end I plan to:
A.continue working from my stash and buying only what I need to finish specific quilts (usually backing), or to replenish my blender fabrics and WOW fabrics as they get used up. I've been very good about this this year and have seen a significant reduction in my stash as a result. The bonus is that by being careful about what I choose to replenish means my stash is now filled with fabrics that can be used in a wide variety of quilts and I can still have fun buying fabrics without breaking the budget or overrunning my fabric storage area.
B. get rid of a semi vintage sewing machine that I have been holding on to, but that I never really bonded with.
C. keep up with my scraps and also my scrap batting. For years I have been making scrap scarves out of my tiny scraps and selling those to get them out of the house. I also have been cutting up anything smaller than a fat quarter into sizes that I like to use and was successful in using up most of my 2.5" squares in 2021 thanks to the Debbie Brown 16 patch quilt along. I have also been using larger bits of scrap batting that stitch together to use in small quilts and table runners and have been cutting the really small pieces into bits to use in pillow stuffing.
For scrap management in 2022 I want to:
a. do some eclectic quilts using my orphan blocks, orphan HSTs and some of the other sizes out of my scrap saver system.
b. do an improvisational quilt
c. come up with some additional ways to use scrap batting.
2. learn at least one new skill- every year I try to focus on learning one new skill. In 2021 I learned how to use the webbing method to make 16 patches and also a method to bind my quilts completely by machine using my zipper foot. I won't use the zipper foot binding technique for show quilts, but it works well and looks very nice for everyday quilts that are meant to be used and it works on my straight stitch only machine-double bonus! Not sure what new skill I want to learn in 2022- but I'm sure something will suggest itself.
3.Make a whole cloth quilt from some difficult to use fabric in a luscious color that I received from my grandmother's estate- it's a slinky slightly shiny fabric that looks great when quilted, but does require careful handling. This will challenge my technical skills as well as help me further work on my design skills.

That's probably plenty to keep me busy in 2022, LOL.

I'm enjoying reading what others want to accomplish in the new year.

Rob

SusieQOH 12-16-2021 08:38 AM

Someone mentioned not buying every single thing she sees online. That's me too! I'm not going to indulge (hopefully) :)

SallyS 12-18-2021 09:32 AM

My goal is to get back to what I enjoy. I've been learning to paint with alcohol ink. It has a flowing, translucent effect that I love, and my thought was to add some sewing to it, but because the surface has to be smooth, I have lots of intimidating experimentation in my future. I want to get back to fabric, too. There's something soothing and creative that I miss. I'm finally finishing a color wheel quilt I've had on Tin Lizzie for over a year, and next is an art quilt of a photo my son took in Cuba. It's a night scene of very poor houses lit by a street light, making even those houses look like they're washed in gold. To me it's emblematic of the spirit of even the very poor Cubans -- making the most of their lives with the little they have. Then I'm going to work on a "controlled" scrap quilt.

Aren't we lucky to have so much and such exciting ideas playing In our heads!

Mkotch 12-19-2021 03:24 AM

Top of my list is to take my machine in for a thorough cleaning!

joe'smom 12-21-2021 10:33 AM

My 2022 goal is to resist starting any new projects. I have an Orca Bay in pieces, the blocks of a Roll, Roll Cotton Boll ready to assemble, a Quatrefoil partially cut, Edyta Sitar's covid mystery begun, Quilted Twins covid mystery in pieces, a second En Provence just wanting borders and the blocks of the two BOM sew-alongs I joined this year to complete and sew together. Those will be this year's piecing projects. I just have to resist any new QB sew-alongs!

petthefabric 12-21-2021 01:42 PM

SallyS
I love alcohol ink. You're going to use fabric? Maybe imitation leather would have the right surface texture. Hmmmmm. I'm so excited to hear your plans.

Flimsies- for some unknown to me reason are what some quilters are choosing to call their unquilted quilt tops. Personally I hate the reference. The dictionary definition of flimsy is:

Definition of flimsy

(Entry 1 of 2)

1a: lacking in physical strength or substanceflimsy silkswore a flimsy dress
b: of inferior materials and workmanshipflimsy construction
2: having little worth or plausibility

in light of that- I do not make my quilt tops ( flimsy) and truely do not understand why anyone would put that description on something they put so much time energy and materials into.
but, there are lots of descriptive terms I don’t understand.
