Acquired quilt pieces
My neighbors mother gave me pieces of a quilt she was making for her grandson many years ago. She is 90 years old and can't sew anymore due to arthritis. On a recent trip to their house, she noticed that everyone had a quilt somewhere in their room, except him. So she asked if I could finish it for her. Problem is she doesn't remember what the pattern was. It is quilt as you go, so her star blocks are all done and quilted. I've got 17 triangles in various sizes, (some partially quilted) and 17 finished blocks. She also had the sashing fabric in the box. She said I could do it any way I liked. I want to use as much of her original pieces as possible, Ideas?

I do not have any idea, but just wanted to say how kind of you to complete this for her. It will be beautiful!! I am sure some of our knowledgeable members of QB will know!

Lovely blocks! I might just do the center with the blue sashing. If you don't have enough triangles to go all around the quilt for a border, you could just add them to the sides. The triangles I would just sew to each other like you have them with no sashing and cut them to length.

Msybe she meant to set the blocks on point? Then the triangles might fit better?

tennesse waltz, maybe? That's set on point, 54-40 type block alternating with solid squares.

Wild it work on point with the light triangles on the sides and the dark ones for the corners?

Turn on point, then the setting triangles fit & it will be larger - start top left & work down. That's why an odd number of blocks.

If I do it this way, there is one missing block and 4 extra triangles. If I have to make an extra block, I may make a few more, because some are different enough that they stick out a bit. Maybe they weren't intended to go with this quilt....

I think your on point layout is probably right, it explains everything, including the triangles. She probably lost a block. You could make a substitute one for the missing one. She used many different blues, you could probably get pretty close.
Here's a layout that uses 17 blocks. |XXX| XXXX |XXX| XXXX |XXX| |-note this is just a spacer If you make it a row of 3, row of 4, row of 3, row of 4, row of 3 it makes 17 blocks, you offset the short rows HALF a block. It doesn't accommodate the setting triangles, tho. It's sweet of you to finish this up for her. |
