HI, I'm totally new to quilting and have only finished one wall hanging. I'm blown away by the gorgeous fabrics out there and want to buy them even if I don't have a project in mind for them. I know it's called stash building but I may have gone overboard. Does anyone else have this problem?

Jim's Gem 07-13-2011 10:34 AM

Many of us have that same problem. Fabric just calls my name. I could make a thousand quilts and still have some left over......

Jo M 07-13-2011 10:36 AM

Oh, welcome to my world. You'll like it here...it's simply brimming with folks just like us. LOL

auntpiggylpn 07-13-2011 10:36 AM

almost EVERYONE on this board suffers from fabric addiction! As long as you have a roof over your head and can feed your children, don't worry about it! However, you should know that the likelihood that you will beat this disease is 0%!!!

And also, Welcome to the board!!!

sweetpea 07-13-2011 10:37 AM

It is a gook thing that my fabric story is over one hour away. I have time to talk myself out of gone that way.

There is no such thing as too much fabric.

Agreed!

laughingquilter 07-13-2011 10:59 AM

I've got it AND.....there's no 12 step program for getting over it!

SparkMonkey 07-13-2011 11:08 AM

Heh... I'm the opposite... I feel like I SHOULD be building a stash, but I just cannot bring myself to do it. Just last weekend I was at the store and had an armful of FQs that were on sale. Walked around with those things for about 20 minutes before just putting them back on the shelf. I didn't have a purpose for them, and I just couldn't bring myself to buy them.

I compensate by over-purchasing by half a yard sometimes on fabric I really like. I also save every imaginably useful scrap. It may be some years before I can go "stash shopping," but I'm okay with that.

Absolutely! I started out with a shelf, then went to a storage tub, then three storage tubs, and then . . . I have a fabric room. It's scary addicting!!

1227Granny 07-13-2011 11:24 AM

But, do any of you actually "go through your stash" before starting a project or just buy more for a project?

Mariposa 07-13-2011 11:26 AM

:) :) :)

1227Granny 07-13-2011 11:33 AM

If you don't have a project in mind, how much fabric do you buy for your stash?

whinnytoo 07-13-2011 11:37 AM

Guilty as charged.......... and theres no cure.

jojosnana 07-13-2011 11:41 AM

Sorry I think all of us do.......

Grama Lehr 07-13-2011 11:53 AM

Welcome

DebQuilter50 07-13-2011 11:55 AM

I love fabric. I want more fabric.

Zhillslady 07-13-2011 12:01 PM

Is there really such thing as over-board?

Both! It's hard to resist beautiful fabric, especially if I have a project in mind. (And, like someone else said, I tend to intentionally over buy.) It's also hard to resist clearance priced fabric, even if I don't have project in mind! Then, when I'm ready to start a project, I can go "shopping" through my stash. Since I mooch space in my Sis-in-law's sewing room, we help each other out if one of us has the perfect fabric for the other's project. Ahh.... I love all of it! Now I want to go down to look and touch it all. :)

SuziC 07-13-2011 12:11 PM

Most of us are Addicts!!! But i call it a "fabric collection" Just sounds better..LOL

Podunk Princess 07-13-2011 12:19 PM

In the past I would purchase a couple of yards of whatever caught my eye. I'm working on getting "well," but not having much luck with that. Every time I receive my Hancocks of Paducah catalog I have a relapse...LOL!

Amythyst02 07-13-2011 12:32 PM

Welcome to the club

dd 07-13-2011 12:50 PM

Oh, your supposed to go through it before you start another project?!?lol That explains a lot of it. It depends on how I'm feeling. If I feel like digging through it then yes, otherwise, it's more fun to go buy more. My friend said she had the fabric, she could see it, but it was on the bottom of the pile and she didn't want to mess up the rest of the fabric so she just bought more. Had to laugh!!!

sahm4605 07-13-2011 12:52 PM

just watch out for cameras and people stopping you to ask you questions. there are a few cleaning and hording shows out there that don't understand having a fabric stash and stuff.

mom-6 07-13-2011 01:05 PM

Even with a relatively extensive stash, there's always that 'one more' you need to finish whatever project it is. And then there's the fabric that just screams your name when you walk by, and...

cbridges22 07-13-2011 01:05 PM

WE ALL DO!

Charming 07-13-2011 01:07 PM

Join the club... i started quilting 1 1/2 year ago and i already have a mini Joann's at home.

It started with i just need a yard of this and yard of that, and i ended buying bolts now..lol

Yes, I usually start at my stash. I then may want to add to the group for that particular project.
The last few quilts I have done, only one was with newly purchased fabrics. I pulled from my stash for the rest of 6 projects. Usually I have the backing fabric without buying anything.

maryel 07-13-2011 01:16 PM

It must be written in our DNA! :D

pocoellie 07-13-2011 01:45 PM

Nope, none of US have that problem. LOL Truthfully, I think that the majority of us have the same problem. LOL We could have worse addictions though.

PaperPrincess 07-13-2011 01:48 PM

Sometimes I think my hobby isn't quilting, it's BUYING quilting fabric, and quilting books, and quilting gizmos and, well, you get it.

KGoodhand 07-13-2011 01:49 PM

Welcome to the club!! The owner of the LQS by me told me herself that I am definitely addicted to anything that has to do with quilting!!

CoriAmD 07-13-2011 03:36 PM

She with the most fabric wins...

Me too! I buy for the project that I'm going to make - up the amount of each fabric by 1/4 yard "just in case".

newquilter10 07-13-2011 03:59 PM

I love fabric too and tend to buy too often; but, I see something and think that would look good in a quilt and get it.

Termi 07-13-2011 06:38 PM

Yes, I should have told you I'm addicted to those things too, all the gadgets and gizmos and books. I also want to try just about every pattern I see. So many patterns, so little time.

VickyS 07-13-2011 06:56 PM

Trouble is - it is hard to dive through the stash and feel guilty, and easy to just buy it and keep piling on the leftovers!

I keep telling myself - NO MORE - then some project has all but one or two materials - so down to Joann's to get it, then bring home 5 (not the ones I went in for) so back to the store till the budget goes dry!

I finally decided to only shop the going out of business clearance sales and auctions/garage sales, and ask for help if I have only one or two materials missing. So far, I've managed. I console myself with the thought that 95% is for charity, so eventually it will all work out. I finally started to Pay It Forward with others on the guild, again to cut down on the guilt. It helps!
