Advice required for thin quarters please

Hello, I have just received my order of 20 quarter yard cuts , civil war scrap collection, from the Quilted Hen, and the material is lovely. I am wondering what pattern to use though. I am leaning to scrappy dissapearing nine patch but would enjoy any suggetions. I am wondering if I do do the d9p should I use the same colour for the middle patch that is cut through , I would have to use additional fabric, or not, if so would a sharp contrast say black be too much.
Thank you in advance for your help
Katherine.
PS Happy New Year to you all from England

I didn't realize that 1/4 yard cuts were called "thin quarters". . . No help with the pattern but Happy New Year to you from Indiana!

I too never heard of skinny or thin, just thought it was quarter of a yard

auntpiggylpn 12-31-2011 10:19 AM

You are absolutely correct, it did turn out GORGEOUS!!!

Drew 12-31-2011 10:20 AM

WOW Peckish your quilt is a knockout!! Never heard of "skinny" quarters as well.

MAXIES2 12-31-2011 10:52 AM

That is a lovely quilt Peckish I dont know that I am up to that standard. I think I must have made up the name 'thin quarters' if no one else has heard them called this.

That civil war pineapple is really great, I have some civil war fabric and may consider this as I really like it. Grace

JUNEC 12-31-2011 10:56 AM

WOW - Peckish - what a gorgeous quilt -& yes, I have heard of 1/2" yard being called a thin quarter

darlenec 12-31-2011 11:07 AM

Hello England and Happy New Year to you too. My daughter's birthday is New Year's Day so the whole world celebrates-I always told her.

What is a thin quarter? Do you mean fat quarter or is thing another new way to cut fabric? I have always enjoyed Civil War blocks set into other period colors like bold pink and deep blues and even a muslin color that allows the quilting pattern to show.

fatquarters 12-31-2011 11:24 AM

I have been planning some quilts with civil war repos too. I am going to use a pattern by Kim Deihl. I have seen some really nice ones done with just a regular nine patch, and I remember one done with the churn dash block

JMCDA 12-31-2011 11:42 AM

I think a "thin" quarter is the perfect description for a quarter yard cut - I'm going to try to remember that! LOL
Peckish - that quilt is just fabulous, love, love, love it!

Pecking, love your quilt.

Mickey1 12-31-2011 12:11 PM

Sorry, I wrote "Peckish" but the computer decided "pecking"!

dunster 12-31-2011 12:47 PM

MAXIES2 - I think it would be fine to use different colors for the centers of the d9p. I don't think of black when I think of civil war prints - brown might be a better choice if you want a unifying color. Of course if there is black in your collection then by all means try it.

Peckish - LOVELY quilt! How wide are the logs? Did you paper piece?

Scissor Queen 12-31-2011 02:03 PM

As long as your pattern doesn't call for any squares bigger than 9 inches you can use regular quarter yards.

Peckish 12-31-2011 04:27 PM

Thank you all very much for the compliments. The pattern I used is from Laundry Basket Quilts, and it's called "Hawaiian Delight". I think it's still available on their website. Electric Quilt also has several pineapple blocks in their programs.
The logs are 1" wide finished. I started with an assortment of quarter yards and cut them into 1.5" x 9" strips. This made it really easy - there was not a lot of yardage to wrestle with. The blocks are paper-pieced. Some of the fabrics I used were really, REALLY ugly, but it's true what they say - if your fabric is too ugly to use in a quilt, you haven't cut it small enough yet! :D

There's a foundation paper for piecing 1½" strips into pineapple blocks - each sheet makes a 12" finished block. You do all your placement and sewing on the printed side of the paper, so no holding the paper up to the light to make sure you have a space covered. You pre-cut all your 1½" strips to fit onto all the spaces on the foundation. There are guidelines for where to place each strip and all you do is sew a quarter-inch from the raw edges every time you put down a new strip. It was amazingly easy and fun and so precise!

Here's one place that carries them so you can see them. Your local quilt shop probably carries them. :)

I know exactly how you feel, Lori! It took me almost a year to plod through that quilt, lol! Keep going and your reward will be great!

Oh what a beautiful quilt. You should be very proud. Thank you for letting us see it.

dorismary2001 01-02-2012 04:03 AM

This must be English terminology as it's commonly used here in the U.K. A thin quarter is a cut 25cm by the width of the fabric rather than a fat quarter.

Why don't you do a search and get some patterns for civil war blocks? If you have EQ7 I know it has alot of them it's data base. There are lots of different ones to choose from. I've been doing a BOM for 2 yrs now and still havn't repeated doing the same one.

What size is your quilt and how many "skinny" quarters did you use?

IMHO, if you are using civil war fabrics, you should probably use a civil war era pattern. There many out there and a lot of them would be suitable for a beginning quilter. Just Google civil war quilt patterns and you should find something in you skill level. Just sayin.....

LOVELY! Now I know what I will do with a lot of my mismatch scraps from last year, I already love log cabins, and somewhere saw a pattern for this, just hadn't put the two together. I by the way never heard the fat quarters called thin quarters, is there a difference perhaps in the way they are cut?

I'm working on my first DP9 and LOVE the pattern. Mine is done using the same fabric in the corners and the same fabric in the center. The rest is mixed. I think that using the same fabric in the center is a good idea. I don't know if black might not be too harsh because I don't know how dark your fabric selection is. At 9" you could do 4.5" squares to get the most bang for your buck. Personally, I like the scrappy look but I do like it when the corner squares are standing out a bit.

Yes, that is exactly the difference. A bolt of fabric is (usually) 44" wide. If you cut a quarter of a yard, it's 9 inches wide by 44 inches long. If you cut a half yard (18 inches), then cut it in half again (22 inches) you get a piece of fabric that is almost square at 18 x 22 inches. This is called a fat quarter, because it is still a quarter of a yard but instead of being skinny and long, it's fat and short. The actual "area" of the fabric stays the same. (9 x 44 = 396, 18 x 22 = 396.)

It's 64 x 64, although it would be really easy to make a different size. If I remember right, I think I used about 30 skinny quarters - 15 lights and 15 darks. 1/4 yard for the red centers, and I think I needed more than 1/4 yard for the yellow squares next to the red center, maybe it was 1/2 yard.
