Compared to a lot of other quilters stash, mine if fairly young. I have only been accumulating stash for a couple years. Some pieces that came from my aunt might be older but not by much. I hope to be able to leave a nice collection to my grands someday.
|
Fabrics in my stash go back to the 80's. I have patterns for dresses that were the ones my Mother made for me in the 50's.
Just recently I found out I had bits and pieces of my Grandma's bias tapes and trims. she died in 1970. If it doesn't fall apart when you wash it or sew with it, it should never be too old. :) |
I am making dresses for my granddaughter from patterns that my mother used to make dresses for me in the early 60's. What goes around, comes back around again.

Although I'm fairly new to quilting (about 4 years) I have some material that was my grandmother's, some from my mom, and some I just got in the mail yesterday. I'm 76 so you can figure just how old some of my stash is !!!
|
I just found some old pieces of yardage that were 24 inches selvedge to selvedge and some that were 36 inches. Pretty old, I'd say, but I don't remember when or where I bought them. Probably got them for high school or maybe grade school home ec. which would have been in the early 1950's. Probably bought them at LS Ayres in Indianapolis.

mine goes back to the late 70's i guess plus fabric from others who had stashes plus i love antiques so i pick up some antique fabric along the way so i have a mix of this and that. lol

Not that long, only about 4 yrs
Maybe1day |
mine dates back to my childhood, when mom would give me bits and pieces of fabric from her projects. i have some that dates back to my grandmother's day--victorian stuff. and i have fabric from when i was first married, as well, and when i was in nursing school--that was 45 years ago. i love being able to put something really old into a square, just for old time's sake (and to see if anyone will notice...)

What a great treasure! I have scraps from my grandmother from dresses she made for herself & for us grandchildren so they're over 50 yrs. old.
|
I took my first quilt class in 1991. Before that I sewed some clothes for myself and my children. Only a few of the scraps of clothing left. I am so far behind I can go "shopping" in my stash when I need something.
|
Some of my stash belonged to my mother and was old when she passed. I would guess it is from about the 40's. That makes it about 70 years old. Still seems to be in good condition. I made a quilt out of it this past winter and it turned out great.

I inherited my MIL's stash (no one else sews). In it I found a piece of fabric she cut out for a dress that exactly matches fabric my grandmother put in a quilt -- dated to the 1930's. I was amazed and thrilled to have that fabric since what is in the quilt is disintegrating. I keep hoping my hands stop hurting so I can fix the bolcks.
Except for MIL's stash, my stash has fabrics from 1975+, but most are from 1998+. Just remembered -- I have a piece of Chinese silk brocade that was brought to the US in the 1920's by a great aunt. |
as a newbie, less than 6 months

Some of my stash goes back to the 1950's. I was still a kid but my mom was the sewer. I have her stash too. I would have had some original flower sack material from the 40's too but I let it get away.
|
I started quilting in 1993 and still have fabric from then!
|
I have been quilting about 10 years. I am very drawn to fabric at yard sales. Not the turquoise, pink, brown and lime being reintroduced today, i mean the palm fronds of the 50s and hearts of the 70s..i am garnering fabric to make the "Affairs of the Heart" quilt and just found a box of 2.5" batiks at our local estate junk shop. I also found 2000 yards of yellow thread that would be perfect for the embroidery accents. I feel very happy with stuff like this.
|
I started quilting in 1998 but have sewn since the late 60s. So while I do have a few pieces of fabric from the 80s, actual 'stash' is only from 98. My Grandma made me a quilt in 1972 using fabric scraps from dresses she made & wore AND from dresses I made for myself and my mom. It's such a joy to look at those stars & remember.

Mine goes back a few years mainly 12 but have a few things from when the boys were little and did a little sewing.
|
My stash started with the leftovers from sewing clothes for
me and my girls. That dates back to the 60's. I didn't start quilting till early 70's. I've made about a hundred bed-sized quilts, not counting baby quilts, throws, charity quilts and other things like purses, etc. It makes for quite an assortment of fabrics. and I still use from it along with buying just for quilting for about 30 years. |
My stash goes back about 10 years.

I started my latest stash in 2005

Thanks for sharing your "stash's ages" and stories. I love the stories. My aunt restored old quilts for a while and the importance of the proper age fabrics was what made that so great. I loved knowing most of us can remember when we use and what we sewed with those fabrics. Keep the stories coming. That is what I like about all our postings. Anna

I have found fabric from about 1981 when I moved into my current home, yes, I am a fabric hoarder, I a hard time getting rid of any of it, of course I haven't finished organizing it, so who knows
|
My stash goes back to about 1987,
|
Some of mine is from clothing scraps from early 60s.

*snicker* Anyone, not a quilter, reading this board would think we were druggies, talking about our "stashes". I guess we are addicts in a way. I have some feed sacks in my stash from when my grandparents had a mom-n-pop grocery store and sold chicken feed and had a few chickens themselves. That fabric has to be 50-60 years old. I'll probably never cut it up for quilts.
|
Sounds like a wonderful quilt. Be sure and post the finished product. My stash is around 5 years old...except for the pieces I have bought at thrift stores and from other quilters.
|
My actual "acquired for quilting" stash only started about 9 months ago, but someday I will find the many scraps I kept "for making quilts or crafty things" from every sewing project since about 1960. (I know there are some in boxes under the bed in the guest room, some hiding in the garage, some in the back of a high cupboard, some in a box in my Horror Room (aka sewing room, square-dance-petticoats room, storage room and extra closet). And then there are the clothes that shrank while hanging in the closet but their fabrics are too pretty to get rid of; since weight loss is elusive, I guess they are now potential quilts!
