I am currently working on my Granddaughter a quilt. I have bought a lot of matching fabric quarters but found I needed a few more different pieces. So I dug down into my Stash box. I found that in my box I had fabric that I had used for items made for her Daddy. So now the quilt will have pieces of memories of past projects made for her daddy and Me. The "Trucks and Cars" was for a shirt, the "fishes" a jumper, the "hearts" was Valentine bags for a school party. The Lace was from my wedding dress her Great Grandma help sew for me and the "pink roses" was from my first quilt. We are talking about 30 years of keeping of my Stash.
So I was just wondering How old is your Stashes? Anna |
never to old.[I hope]
Isn't it wonderful to have those memories in a quilt. I think that is one of many reasons I like scrappy quilts. They really are anything but scrappy!
My stash goes back about 12 years and then I have some vintage fabric which was a gift. Everything old is new again. peace :D |
Maybe we should have a birthday party for our stash... I think appropriate gifts would be fat quarters, and of course layer cakes!
I have fabric in my stash from 1993. Did a big destashing first of the year because so much of it was no longer my taste. I did keep a few of my favorites.
Some of the fabric in my stash is from my grandmother. She died when I was 8 and that was 54 years ago. I wash it and press it before I use it. I also give it some firm tugs to make sure it doesn't have any weak spots that might give with the use of the quilt. It should be good if it has been stored away from the sun, just as you would your new fabrics.
Small world. My grandparents were from Newark, Ark. My Cousin lives in Batesville. My grandmother also died when I was young. Her sister took her quilting items and I recieved a quilt and many stores of my grandmother's quilting bees but no fabrics.
My stash is aged from ancient to 1 week old.
Seven years! I moved to FL in 2004 and didn't bring my old stash with me...kicked myself many times for that one!
Some of mine is when I used to quilt in the 80s
I started my stash in 1998 with the advice and help of my mother. Was really slow until around 2004 then I went mad stocking up. My mother passed away around that time and I received her stash which dates back well into the 1980's or before. She would buy three yard pieces so I have a big stash of that. I only shop for fabric now when I need something to finish up or go with what I'm working on. I've been very fortunate.
Well------I have had fabric since the 8th grade when I started sewing. I would save every little thing. Then my grandma and aunts would give me fabric. I think it dates back to the 1970's; wowzersssss that's along time ago. Never thought about the age of my stash. Still have a dress my Mom made for me in grammer school is that considered my stash - was always going to cut it up but never did.
9 years
I started in the 80's.
all the way back to 1963 when I started making my own school cloths-I was only 7 and to this day I still can't throw anything away :) and I'm still collecting :-)

I have fabric in my stash from when I was nine and first started sewing so I guess some of my stash will be celebrating the big 50 next year. I did manage to use up a lot of really old stuff starting a couple of memory quilts for my sister and myself using fabric from "home". Now I just have to get them finished up for her birthday in December.
Mine's not too old. Probably 15 years. It's small but growing. I like shopping for fabric. :-)
My stash goes back to the 70s - still have some calicos from when Macy's in NYC had a fabric department.
2 1/2 years ...Nov 2009 I took my first class and bought my first stash.
My stash is over 20 years ole. I did go thru and gave away alot of the oldest as I didn't like it anymore.
Well Here goes, now I will date myself for sure. I have fabric that I bought when I started working in a sewing factory in 1973. Is that old enough for you. If not, I have fabric scraps from the 1930's from my Mom's stuff. LOL
I began quilting in 2001, so my stash began then too.
I've been quilting ten years? so I guess that's how old some of my stash is!
hmmm... a lot of my stash is from the 80's that I purchased... but I have inherited fabrics from the 1940's, 50's and 60's that my mother used to make me & my sister dresses and then mom inherited fabrics from my grandmother from the 20's and 30's ... all of it in very good condition and still strong for quilting :D

With chocolate, of course.  |
I started sewing my dolls clothes in the 1st grade. I don't have any fabric from then but I do have a dress my mom made me.
I started working in fabric's back in 1963 still have some from back then ....you never know.
I made my oldest daughter's baby quilt with fabric I had cut from my maternity clothes..... that was in 1983. She still has it!
Easily 30 years old for some of the pieces.
My stash is ageless--I once went to an auction and bought 19 boxes of fabric. It was all new and still in the packages that it was brought home from the store. The tabs ranged back to 1929-1954. found out the lady had worked in a 5&10 cent store that carried fabric. she would buy the fabric that went on sale in hopes when she retired she would be able to quilt all day. Found out she retired and a few months later passed away. Her sister inherited the fabric and had it in a closet for another 20 years. When sister passed there was an auction. Had I known that the fabric was all in excellent condition with no bugs or rodents having lived in it would have bought all "96" boxes sight unseen. As it was I ended up with 2,000+ yards of vintage fabrics. Had a fabric party for all my quilting buddies. I still have some of the pieces in my stash.
I have some fabric that is a little over 45 years old. Most of my stash is 10-30 years old. I really like to have memories and stories behind my quilts and I can tell my kids where I got the fabric and why and my grandkids have fun finding fabric I made their clothes from. I try not to buy much fabric. My goal is to sew up all my fabric before I die. However, I did add about 120 yards of quality quilt shop fabric to my stash this year because I stumbled across two 75% off closeout sales!
I just went threw mine and donated some things from the early 1960's. Did have to keep one piece my Mother gave me in 1965. Just couldn't give it away - YET. But, I have donated lots just to keep me 40 years current anyway. LOL
I have some bits of fabric from my mother and since I'm 59, it's old! That quilt you're making sounds wonderful. Please post photos!
I was always afraid to buy fabric on the garage sales but have started since the price of it has gone up so much. I still have some fabric from the 70's when I sewed for my kids but I don't think I will use any of it for the quilts because not sure if it is all cotton but my youngest daughter wants a denium quilt she is saving up jeans from everybody that she knows so maybe I can use some if it in there for deco & stuff. She even wants the pockets so maybe some for a hangkey or such. Love the ideas that I find on here.
I have some linen that was my Grandmother's. She died in 1960.
My stash is newer. Didn't start quilting until about 3 years ago.
I have some aprons my grandmother made and wore in the '50's that will be put in a quilt one day. And a poncho my sister made for one of our brothers in the '60's that is waiting for a future crazy quilt. I also have some vintage from other people that I don't know so I don't know about their age but from all appearances they are '60's/'70's. Only Grandma's aprons are older than me so nothing really old yet ;-)
My stash is still a teenager. I didn't start building a stash until 1998, even though I made plenty of quilts prior to that.
Mine is from way back in the 70's when they still sold fabric at the local hardware stores. Oh, they had such beautiful fabric and nice patterns back then! I remember the creak of the plank wood floors under your feet when you browsed through the sewing area. Brings back some great old memories - thanks for that!
