I am right with you too. I always machine to top of the binding and hand stitch the back down. I find it very relaxing to do at night while watching my favorite shows
|
Lots of us like to sew the binding on. We just don't seem to be as vocal as those of us that don't enjoy doing it...LOL

I like someone else to attach it then I really like hemming the back down by hand.

I would love to find someone to trade machine quilting for binding because I am terrible at FMQ. |
I machine sew the front and hand sew the back...I love sitting and doing this on the patio on a summer evening with a glass of ice tea..or in the morning on the patio with a cup of coffee....yep...I love it.
I find it relaxing and a change from sitting at the machine all the time |
I like doing the binding. I hate basting a quilt for quilting
|
I love to do it...just the fact that it is the "finishing" step....and then I can declare the quilt "done"..... Gives a huge sense of accomplishment that I just don't feel before then!
|
Almost 100% of my quilts have been made as a gift.
So, as I hand sew the binding to the back, I have a little private time thinking about the person who will recieve it, and say prayers for them as I sew. It is also a time to say goodbye to the quilt, as by the time I finish a quilt, I have fallen in love with it, and it is hard to let it go. |
I love doing binding. It is the only hand-sewing I do, and there is something about the process that makes me feel good - perhaps the impending completion, or maybe the last few stitches I put into a quilt, dunno why, but I love to sew binding. :)
|
Love to do binding. On some quilts it is the last time I get to spend time admiring with all the wonderful fabrics in it.
It is very relaxing to sit at the table with a quilt draped around me like a last hug. |

I don't finish too many of my quilts. My tops get hung and I admire them as works of art.
I'm not quite sure if I am actually good at my binding. It works for me and I think it's a great project to have when I just want to sit around and watch (listen) to the TV. Never thought of trading with someone for maybe simple machine quilting. Maybe a great way to meet more quilting friends!! |
I love to bind. I do mine by hand.
|
I love sewing on binding.

I am so glad to find out that I am not the only one who likes to do the binding. I love to try out new techniques for binding. My new favorite it Piped Binding. Here is a wonderful tute for it http://tlcstitches.blogspot.com/2010...-tutorial.html
And here's another tute for binding that uses two fabrics so you can match the binding to both the front and the back. http://scrapsbystephanie.blogspot.co...-tutorial.html |
I love hand sewing. I find it relaxing.
|
Course you're weird but then aren't ALL quilters??? After all, we cut up perfectly good fabric only to sew it all back together again!
I love hand sewing the binding, the actual process itself as I don't do much hand sewing these days otherwise but also it's kind of a letting go process - the piece is nearly finished, binding, hanging sleeve and label on, then I have to let it go and move on.... now I am TRULY weird! 8-) |
I too love to put the binding on. It is relaxing and I feel a sense of accomplishment.....another project finished!!!

No! your not weird.
Sewing on the binding to me means the quilt that I am working on is almost finish, and I am in the last stretch. I also love making the binding. |
Love doing the binding too. Not for any sense of accomplishment, but because it's where the painstaking and mindless converge.
|
I too like doing binding. I like the slip stitching. As of late, I have switched to Mettler thread for all of my hand sewing. Works like a charm! No knotting at all.
It's a feeling of accomplishment when you are done. |
I enjoy the hand sewing portion of binding, so 'No', you're not weird.
I still have to get my binding instructions out when I am at the stage where I joing the beginning & ending strips to the top. |
I'm in, I like to sit and do binding, thinking about the whole quilt and the process for making it or the person that is going to be receiving it.

I also enjoy binding! So glad I'm not alone! ha ha
|
I would like to know the "secret" to binding by machine. My daughter finished a quilt, and I "tried" to bind by machine. It didn't turn out well; had to take it off - and that is where we are with it now. The side we sewed on was fine, but missed lots of spaces on back side. She even pinned it! Help.
As always, thank you guys for all your encouragement and help :) |
YES.....
|
Yes :) :) :) :) For all you quilters who like binding---I wish I were your neighbors---I get sick just thinking about it!!!! I am so glad I just learned a neat way to do machine binding that looks nice. Except to "special" quilts, I am going to try to do a machine binding on each one. I make large quilts so you are correct to assume I have some all quilted but waiting for me to put that binding on! :-( Have a great day!
|
I enjoy binding by hand. I am a perfectionist when it comes to the binding, so I don't want anyone else doing it.
|
Go to the blog---http://tlcstitches.blogspot.com and search the tutorials for "faux piped binding tutorial". I use that and it is wonderful. You machine bind from the front and end up with a really nice finish.
|
I too love it!!!!
|
Love doing binding. It's soothing, and cheaper than therapy.
|
I love to do binding also. I listen to the Bible on cd's while I'm binding. It's very relaxing and I'm getting through the Bible! :)
|
wow, it seems this board is split on this process!! put me on the side of not liking the binding process, i will mahcine bind any chance i get, and if i need it done by hand i ask my friend who is on the other side and loves it!!
|
I enjoy doing the batting. Sandwiching not so much.
|
I enjoy hand sewing on the binding. Can sit in my comfortable chair in the living room - spend a little time with the family. Have thought of doing a small hand quilting project just for that reason.
|
Sewing on the binding is the part of making a quilt that I most enjoy. Maybe it is the fact that the quilt is nearing completion that makes that step so exciting for me. Actually, I think it is that I so enjoy doing the hand sewing. I can sit in my recliner, watch TV and sew away. Incidentally, cutting, seaming, and pressing the binding fabric is the first thing I do when starting a quilt.
|
Guess I'm wierd too. I like hand-sewing the binding to the back. I sit and watch tv and before I know it, it's done. I'm with dmyers, I took a class and I reference the the instruction sheet every time I need to join the ends. Perfect joins every time, no muss no fuss, no drama, no trauma.
|
Pds - thank you so much for the link to the binding tutorial - it is wonderful! I think even I can make a beautiful, professional looking binding, using this site!
As always, you guys always come through for me! |
while not a huge FAN of doing the binding, I do not care for the look of the machine binding, and prefer hand work instead. I also prefer to pay a lady who LOVES this process!
