LOL... I've read enough posts to know that a bunch of you actually hate the binding process. I admit that binding with the sewing machine is a little intimidating to me. But I found that doing it by hand is fun and makes me feel like I can accomplish something. Probably because it's the last step of finishing a quilt and I found out on this board, I am a "topper." I don't finish too many of my quilts. My tops get hung and I admire them as works of art.

I'm not quite sure if I am actually good at my binding. It works for me and I think it's a great project to have when I just want to sit around and watch (listen) to the TV. Never thought of trading with someone for maybe simple machine quilting. Maybe a great way to meet more quilting friends!!

johanka 10-12-2011 06:03 AM

I have always liked to sew the binding on.

amazon 10-12-2011 06:04 AM

No, your not weird! I love to do binding, when I first joined here I did binding only by machine. After my first hand sewn binding I said never again by machine. Love the process even though it is time consuming.

Me too.

dmyers 10-12-2011 06:05 AM

I like doing binding too! But I do it on the machine, so I don't know if that counts. When I first started quilting I took a binding class and it was the best thing I ever did. To this day I still have the written instructions and demo of connecting the binding strips.

tutt 10-12-2011 06:07 AM

I love the binding also, but like dmyers I do it on the machine. I LOVE the feeling of finishing something!

ShowMama 10-12-2011 06:07 AM

Well, if you're weird, then so am I. I really like doing the binding. I love designing, piecing, and binding, just not so much the actual layering and quilting part.

Zhillslady 10-12-2011 06:11 AM

Check with a fellow quilter. I cannot do a lot of hand work and have a firend that cannot do FMQ. Simply has no gift for it so we barter. I FMQ her tops and she does all of my binding by hand. It's a fair trade if you get someone like me that can't or won't do it themselves.

YES

Oh how I hate to do binding.................

QuiltE 10-12-2011 06:12 AM

I enjoy the final hand binding step. Actually, I find it quite relaxing to just sit there with my feet up and stitch away. While it seems like a lot of miles to cover, though it really doesn't take all that long!

I always see binding as the final crown on the project, and like to see it well done. And soon, another project is finished, done and completed! And I can SMILE and enjoy the results!!!

Doing it for someone else? ... hhmmmm never thought of that, though I wouldn't mind.

amandasgramma 10-12-2011 06:14 AM

I like sewing it on, too....I love the last few stitches when you realize "the quilt is DONE" and turn it over to see how much that REALLY finishes off the quilt!

thepolyparrot 10-12-2011 06:22 AM

We can all be weird together. :) I like doing the bindings - I sew the front by machine, press and do the back by hand. A king-size quilt can take three or four evenings to hand-finish, but I like hand work and it's worth it to have one DONE! :)

paulina 10-12-2011 06:24 AM

I LOVE doing binding. Everything about it. Making the strip, ironing it, sewing it. LOVE IT.

mollymct 10-12-2011 06:27 AM

I enjoy applying the binding, too! I've only done it by machine, but look forward to trying the handsewn binding sometime soon. I love watching the quilt near completion!!

sewmuch 10-12-2011 06:28 AM

I also like doing the binding by hand, its relaxing to me..

MoMoSews 10-12-2011 06:31 AM

I love to hand sew on binding. AHHHHH the finished product!! But with hand arthritis, I don't hand sew everything. If it's a wall hanging I use steam a seam on the back and it works great.

liwilliams 10-12-2011 06:32 AM

Oh me too! I love every step of doing the binding. I think it's so relaxing, plus it's exciting knowing that the quilt is almost finished.

Montana Quilter 10-12-2011 06:32 AM

I love hand sewing the binding on. To me it is relaxing and I feel like it is a old, ancient action that women have done for centuries. It feels like a connection/continuation with those women. How's that for weird?

ckcowl 10-12-2011 06:33 AM

i like doing bindings enough that i even do them for friends who do not want to do theirs-
for me it is the (finishing touch) to a project-- the last sewing step before the finished project goes into the washer- another project finished-

Maggiemay 10-12-2011 06:34 AM

I like to do binding too! I do mine all by machine. I think like you, that I enjoy doing that last step that will finish off my quilt.

Lacelady 10-12-2011 06:35 AM

I love sewing the binding on because it's the last step, and then the quilt is finished. I also love to handsew, so that helps

leaha 10-12-2011 06:41 AM

I sew the binding on the back side of the quilt by machine then fold it to the front side and hand stitch it down, I like the look of hand work on the front of my quilt. I .love doing the binding as it means the quilt is almost ready to use or hang.

pastimesquiltdesign 10-12-2011 06:41 AM

I like to bind as well. It's nice to throw a quilt on my lap on a cold night and hand stitch the binding on while watching TV or talking on the phone. Plus it gives me a sense of accomplishment.

Me too! I love to finish my quilts. I machine sew them.

simplyme 10-12-2011 06:53 AM

I also like to do binding by hand. To me it is like putting a frame on a picture. I find it very relaxing too.

and when you are around my house and I need to have binding on a quilt, who do I ask, my mother (johanka) of course :P Just wish you were around more often, this is the one part of a quilt that I do not like to do

thequilterslink 10-12-2011 07:07 AM

I hate hate hate bindings! I use to hate putting hems in too when i made clothes LOL... Maybe i am weird... don"t tell me

Kehoeta 10-12-2011 07:17 AM

Not my most favorite part - but I don't hate it. I think we all quilt for some sense of satisfaction. Where we get it is different for everyone.

quilt queen 2 10-12-2011 07:39 AM

I too love to do binding liketo o something while I watch TV!!

Jeanniejo 10-12-2011 07:42 AM

I love sewing on binding !! I know it's the finishing touch on all my hard work and it's totally mindless!!!

gramajo 10-12-2011 08:26 AM

Yes, you are definitely weird :D :D Even though finishing the binding is the final step to a finished quilt, I procrastinate doing it. I have rheumatoid arthritis & my hands don't work well, I don't have too much trouble with all the other steps in quilting, putting the binding on is just plain DIFFICULT for me.

quilt1950 10-12-2011 08:32 AM

Ditto

I love doing binding! It is the quilting I hate. I love to piece the tops tho.

Kirie 10-12-2011 08:45 AM

So there is a big group of 'binding-lovers'. I LOVE to sew binding. I hate quilting (but it's probably cause I have a tiny home sewing machine and quilting is a horror).

Olivia's Grammy 10-12-2011 09:49 AM

I like doing the binding. So do we have a new group called "wierd for binding".
Sometimes I sew in by machine, sometimes by hand. Depends on the size, who it's for and how hot it is in the house.

Rose L 10-12-2011 10:31 AM

I always hand sew my bindings and enjoy doing so. For me doing all the cutting is tedious and boring but a necessary part of the whole. When each portion is done they each bring their own feeling of satisfaction so I carry on.

PWinston 10-12-2011 10:36 AM

If you aren't weird then I am. I hate sewing on binding. Guess it's not that I hate it so much as that I am so slow in doing it. Seldom do "hand" work and if takes fooooorevvvvver to accomplish it when I could be doing other things. Like wasting time, opps I meant spending quality time, on the QB.

Ditto! Machine binding stitched to the front and hand sewn to the back. Very relaxing and love the "it's done" feel.
