let's see..... they're not teaching them to be polite. they're not teaching them to use the cash register. they're not teaching them to make change. they're not teaching them to measure properly. they're not teaching them to speak clearly, admit mistakes, not lie through their teeth. they're definitely not teaching them the difference between kitten fur and batting. they're not teaching them what notions are, nor do they have any notion what to do with them.

what they are teaching them is that if you're willing to work part-time without benefits (and without bathrooms, apparently) and you show up once in a while, then you can snap your gum and keep your job.

Our JoAnn's remodeled and now is huge. Unfortunately, customer service shrunk as well as common sense. I went to have fabric cut at the counter, and you have to take a number from the new machine they put out. It didn't matter that there was only one other person being waited on and the store was practically empty. I felt stupid taking a number so the clerk could call it out, and there was no one else around. Maybe they are just trying to make us all feel so stupid and dumb so we won't shop there any more. I know at my JoAnn's, the clerks act as though you are bothering them if you need something. And they have 4 check outs and only have 1 open. another thing they did was stop the charity sewing for the hospitals-making caps for the preemies. they said head office stopped the program. I hardly go to JoAnns now if I can find it elsewhere.

When all is said and done, I really prefer to support my local quiliting shops. Joann's and Hancocks may be great for discounted fabric etc but they do not attend the local quilting guild meetings, get involved with the local community, make donations toward local charities that sponsor fund raisers or donate fabric to help the guilds make quilts for the various charities. I will stick with my local quilt store, thank you very much!
This is like the thread we had a few months ago on Walmart, when that subject got beaten to death, LOL.
Guess I will get back to sewing, trying to make theThimbleberries," In Full Bloom" button blossom tablerunners (yea, I'm cheating) for our annual guild gift exchange that is in a month. I don't have a lot of time because I babysit grandkids and run them around to their activities while my daughters go to college. I don't complain, I love my "retirement job", but it sure takes away from my sewing time.

To a lot of salespeople and clerks, it is just a job til something better comes along. When I worked, I listened to others I worked with. I used what I learned to better help my boss, or the customer on the line. As a volunteer at a local Library, I know I don't know where everything is located or if so and so 's new book is here but I do know who to ask. BUT if at any time my supervisor in either position acted like I was bothering them, it didn't help me help anyone else. It all goes back ot the top!

when i last called in a complaint, i asked if the joanns were privately owned/operated or franchised or wholly controlled by the company. i was told by the person i spoke to that they were totally controlled by the company. i don't really believe that. i think they're franchised, otherwise there wouldn't be such different rules and operating procedures at each one. the one nearest to me won't give you that last damaged inch unless you pay for it, but the one an hour away will give 50% off the back-of-the-store discount- price if the damage is really bad, like small holes. i bought 3 yards of cute flannel on spec for a discounted price, leaving only 1-1/3 yards. i asked how much they would charge if i took it all. the price dropped dramatically. then when they were measuring, we saw little holes in a cluster near one edge. they dropped the price again. that last 1-1/3 yards ended up costing 77 cents!!!

if the joanns manager near me ever saw that he would drop down dead  ! so i don't believe that the company controls the stores at all. i think they're a franchise and that's why some are good, and some are stinky  and some of them only hire women who don't pee.

I hope I don't offend anyone, but I heard this saying and I just love it. I have it on my computer screen and whenever this happens, I just read it - "Handle every stressful situation like a dog; if you can't eat it or play with it, pee on it and walk away"!

The other one on my screen is:

"We often try to fix problems with WD-40 and duct tape - Jesus did it with nails."

Or - "Home is where the rags of your life are turned into quilts, lemons become lemonade and a few extra pounds are simply welcomed as "more of you to love."

Around here you will find that Joann's has a great trick. They list everything on sale for a little off, then they give you great coupons for 25% or 30% off on any item of your choice, but that excludes anything that is on sale.
That part is in the very fine print. So the only stuff you could use that on are tiny things you don't want any way.

Just venting.
