Very small amount that a friend gave me from Japan, indigo

merchjag 06-30-2011 03:31 AM

I love Asian fabrics-made a paper pieced wall hanging and a quilted jacket for my Mom. I am saving asian fabrics now for a full sized quilt

Blessed 06-30-2011 03:33 AM

I do have some that I bought because I couldn't
resist.
Just Sue's comment about different weights making it hard to use smaller pieces was really helpful. I am so new to quilting that I had not even thought that far. Thanks Sue.

smagruder 06-30-2011 03:39 AM

I have a beautiful red Asian fabric in a quilt that I need to get quilted. LOVE LOVE LOVE Asian prints.

Drew 06-30-2011 03:50 AM

I don't have any but scraps at the moment. Asian fabric is one of my loves. I made Japanese Lanterns (wallhanging) with the fabric I had.

sewmanyideas 06-30-2011 03:55 AM

I have some black fabric with the Asian language written all over it, about 3-4 yds. If anyone is interested in it, they can have at it!

meanmom 06-30-2011 04:11 AM

I love the Asian fabrics. They are beautiful. I made a OBW out of one. They are really good for that. I have some I bought in Japan and I am having a hard time cutting them. I am looking for just the right thing for them.

Vat 06-30-2011 04:18 AM

Have lots. Have done two (2) wallhangings. One is already hanging and the other is on the waiting list to be quilted. Have lots more, no plans right now but maybe soon. Am trying to use up what is already purchased.

gmaybee 06-30-2011 04:33 AM

I don't have any in my stash, but when I see them I think what a great one block wonder they would make.

A few weeks ago, I made my daughter a purse.

The purse has different fabrics on each side (so, it is reversible). That is why you see "4" different purses.

Jennifer22206 06-30-2011 04:41 AM

Oh I do!! I love them. There's just something so happy about them. :) I just adore the Asian theme fabrics. made purses, totes, quilts, wall hangings out of them.

In fact, my one focus fabric for Boomerang 4 was an Asian themed one. :)

Deb watkins 06-30-2011 04:46 AM

I have several yards of several different fabrics. I also drool over them and just the thought of cutting them makes me shudder as they are so beautiful!

Jo Mama 06-30-2011 04:58 AM

I kind of over my Asian phase also over batiks. Just don't know exactly where I am now but still love repros and bright jewel tones.

I am currently on the "hunt" for Japanese Indigo fabrics . It is difficult to get a good variety for some interest in the quilt as "real" indigo fabrics are not much on the pizzaz .

dreamgirl 06-30-2011 05:14 AM

Love the Asian prints! Just started collecting them when I found the China Doll BOM. Hope I can do it. :P

kittycats 06-30-2011 05:31 AM

I like those fabrics. Made a runner for my antique sideboard. Will have to post a pic one of these days.

I used mine to make a quilt for my Chinese daughter-in-law. She likes the color purple.

nickylsf 06-30-2011 05:43 AM

I love oriental fabrics. I made a quilt out of them for my guest room. I have read that people are Asian, but things are oriental. :)

No, but I have an Asian husband stashed on the couch. Does that count?

Thanks for giving me a great laugh to start my day!

mhansen6 06-30-2011 05:57 AM

No, I am not into Asian fabrics. But I have seen some beautiful quilts with Asian fabrics, I just don't sew with them.

Great idea. I may have enough left over for a Bow Tuck!

MelodyWB 06-30-2011 06:00 AM

A ton of them..always hate to cut them up..I'm designing a Bargello..an out of the box one ..going to use some of the Geisha's in certain spots !!

grammysharon 06-30-2011 06:07 AM

I bought them to make a quilt for my nephew and his wife(which I did) and haven't touched them since!

julia58 06-30-2011 06:13 AM

I have one piece that I bought a few years back. Haven't done a thing with it. And probably will cut it in 1 1/2 pieces and use it in log cabin blocks.

rosiewell 06-30-2011 06:13 AM

I have a japanese panel I bought in Japan many years ago. I wanted to turn it in a quilt, so I have been buying asian fabric for borders or whatever for ever, haven't done anything with that, but my asian fabric stash keeps on growing!

Doreen 06-30-2011 06:16 AM

I have Asian fabric that I have been saving for quite a few years. I also drew up a pattern but have yet to put it together.

ScrappyAZ 06-30-2011 06:17 AM

I just completed a Turning 20 with Asian fabric for my daughter. Since Asian fabric tend to be "busy", I did not use 20 different fat quarters. I used several of the same fabric two or three times to give the quilt more continuity. It came out very nice, and I think my daughter will like it.

Being Chinese, you'd think I would have used Asian fabric before now, but I struggled to find an appropriate pattern. I don't remember where I saw it, but someone posted a picture of a snowball quilt using Asian fabric. I may have to use that idea for my next quilt.

May in Jersey 06-30-2011 06:23 AM

Glad someone began this topic. I've been meaning to get my Asian fabric tote out and taking a look at the fabrics I already have. Looking for a focus fabric for a quilt for DGD who graduated from high school last week. I'm sure I can get some ideas for the fabrics I already have, maybe add some tone on tones, etc. and get enough fabric for backing. Putting this on the top of my list for this morning.

A few years ago I made a kimino quilt, don't have any photos on my computer right now but will try to get one later. May in Jersey

I have a friend, a fellow Shiba owner, who has a contact in Japan and she obtains beautiful fabrics featuring Shibas and other Japanese breed dogs. I've made a few quilts/runners for her with her fabrics + some of my Asian fabric stash. I'd love to get some of the fabric myself but there's no 'extra' Shiba fabric left for my personal use. If anyone on this site knows how to obtain these types of fabrics, please send me a message. I'd so appreciate it!!

And another quilt photo, prior to quilting.

catrancher 06-30-2011 06:26 AM

I have one with flying cranes on it. Haven't done anything with it.

BettyGee 06-30-2011 06:33 AM

Definitely! Love the delicate detailing. Also have a number of panels that are going to become the center of either a quilt or a wall hanging.

grannypat7925 06-30-2011 06:37 AM

Trying to get into accumulating some. They are sooo pretty!

laalaaquilter 06-30-2011 06:37 AM

I have a small stack of them. I'm a newbie and haven't collected many or used any yet but I do plan to at some time. In addition to quilting cottons I have some silks, etc. with an eye towards a crazy quilt one day.

writerwomen 06-30-2011 06:47 AM

Have a pla to do an oriental woman with an umbrella and a fan- more of an applique

Dianne1 06-30-2011 06:54 AM

Just love them,, however, not enough stores carry them in my area. I am 50 miles one-way to Jo-anns or Hancocks. Thankfully they are bothin the same shopping plaza.

I think I am doing the same quilt. I have enough squares now but then need to be squared up. Haven't decided on a sashing yet. I have a huge stash of asian fabrics that are too pretty to cut into. Boy is that dumb or what?

wrldwndrr 06-30-2011 06:57 AM

I have quite a collection. Love them all so much I have a hard time cutting them. I want to make a quilt so much but have not been able to decide on a pattern.

llamalady 06-30-2011 07:05 AM

Started buying Oriental fabric this spring. Like everyone else I am having a hard time cutting cutting into them. The colors are so pretty and I don't have a pattern in mind.

I picked up 2 colorways of this lovely cotton dragonfly print from Etsy seller Japonpon...this brown/red dots and a dark blue/red dots, and I too, can't manage to cut it or even find a pattern I'm happy with. I've got coordinating fabric to go with it, though!

Okay, so it's brown(s) and red berries!
