Mine went in and broke off, just beneath the nail. I had to use 2 pliers--one to shove up from the bottom and the other to grab the broken needle. Strangely enough, once it was out, it hardly bled, and only hurt til the next day. But at the time---WOWSERS!!!!! the air was blue!!

familyfun 06-16-2011 04:31 AM

Ouch... I have never put a stitch thru my finger but have have gotten it stuck under the needle. It took Forever to get it out.. The needle up down would not work and I couldnt turn the wheel. I had to push the needle into my finger farther so I could actually take the needle out of the machine. I still remember the Pain..
I feel for you

Mimmis57 06-16-2011 04:40 AM

I recently sewed thru my finger. Thru my fingernail and out the top of my finger. Grabbed the pliers and out it came. Changed the needle and kept going!

Lyncat 06-16-2011 04:45 AM

I worked in a garment factory the summer after I graduated from high school, and during my first week of training I put the industrial machine needle through my fingernail and finger. I got to meet the factory nurse right away! (minimum wage that year was $2.00 and hour)

Lucky Lady 06-16-2011 04:46 AM

I have done that before. Ouch!!!

Ripped on Scotch 06-16-2011 04:53 AM

I have done it once... through my nail and then the needle bend can came out the top of my finger. it was interesting. but I was free motioning a christmas present close to christmas. I pulled the needle out and bandaged it up and started again.

I also cut a good chunk out of my finger with the rotary blade last week, just bandaged myself up and kept going. I even added a 2nd quilt to the frame for the LA and finished it up. but that one I didn't trim the edges... I now remember why I serge the edged of my stuff.

misscarol 06-16-2011 05:15 AM

Been there, done that. It really hurts when you do it with your longarm machine!

EagarBeez 06-16-2011 05:48 AM

I've come close, but, try to be careful. All I can say is OUCH!

grannypat7925 06-16-2011 05:50 AM

Ouch! Haven't done that yet but have come close several times. Do watch it closely that it doesn't get infected!

Jeanniejo 06-16-2011 05:51 AM

OW !!! So sorry ! I've never done it, but we had a girl in Home Ec in High Scool that did !! Ugly!!

Margie 06-16-2011 05:54 AM

OUCH....make sure you watch it carefully for infection.

Doreen 06-16-2011 06:18 AM

OUCH!

ChildoftheUniverse 06-16-2011 06:19 AM

Gentle hug...

jmabby 06-16-2011 06:50 AM

Yes, I had a T shot about 3 years ago, I believe it is still good. Thanks for reminding me.

teacherbailey 06-16-2011 07:00 AM

My exhusband did this while working on my machine many years ago. He called for my help but since I wasn't in my usual position with the machine, I used the wheel on the side....and sent the needle back down through his finger and then back up. Luckily it went down and up through the same hole that it made the first time....

IBQUILTIN 06-16-2011 07:06 AM

I have done that, and I know how much it hurts *********** some kisses for your finger. Hope its better soon

mom dusty 06-16-2011 07:18 AM

I ran the needle through the side of my finger about 30 years ago and have never done it again! I guess I learned that lesson! Yes, it hurt but mostly scared me when I couldn't move my finger!

nycquilter 06-16-2011 07:21 AM

sad to report I'm a member of that club too. Fortunately, I managed not to bleed on the quilt! Yea!

I've come close--on the long arm! Scared me to death, and oh that must have hurt! So sorry! Keep an eye on it not to get infected. I'm hurting for you just thinking about it!

  My sister did it to me when I was little. Little sister just did what Big sister told her to do. "It's OK just put your finger there and let's see what happens". My sister thought it was real funny (I DIDN'T). She did move the wheel up fast. Guess my scream was loud enough. Hope yoiur finger is OK. This is still one of my sisters favorite stories. She also did other things to me (but we won't go there). Still love her. Isn't family great. For me this is a distance memory, until she tells her stories. Hopefuly soon your finger it won't hurt so bad. Hugs to all our sisters and brothers with holes in their fingers. BrendaK

Been there and done that. It really hurts to pull it out. Sorry. joann11 :x

IBQLTN 06-16-2011 10:22 AM

I had the bright idea that if I used my zipper foot to sew a rag quilt together I could get really close to the batting.

Well, I also got 'really close to the needle'. I was going through the intersecting seam of the 4-patch and my hand slipped off the seam and I sewed right thru my finger next to the nail. BUT, when I jerked my hand, I bent the needle at a 90 degree angle and tore out the side of my finger!

So, don't be tempted to use the zipper foot for the rag quilts ... bad idea!

quiltpd 06-16-2011 10:33 AM

Yep, and didn't like it at the time !! LOL

dltaylor 06-16-2011 10:38 AM

Ohh, sounds painful!!

running1 06-16-2011 11:03 AM

sigh... yes... but a different kind of frustration... almost snipped the pad of my thumb off while attempting to snip a simple thread... 6 stitches later, I was fine... and humbled...

Who knew quilting and sewing was so dangerous!!

tadpoles_62 06-16-2011 11:12 AM

i once sewed across my long fingernail and scratch the tip of my finger with the needle , boy did i feel dumb

quilttiludrop 06-16-2011 11:35 AM

Stuff happens! I haven't done that, but nevertheless I know it could happen! Keep drinking your coffee (or tea) and stay alert! :-)

I did cut off the tip of my fingernail with a rotary cutter! Thankfully it wasn't my finger!

Keep it clean and do check on the status of your shots, clean needle or not.

If not done this than took off some skin with the rotary blade!

Hope you are feeling better soon.

CAS49OR 06-16-2011 11:42 AM

I haven't yet, but have read the stories, so you should see me jump if I think it's any where close, like when the screw hits my finger or something.

OW! Hope it feels better soon!

grandma sue 06-16-2011 12:02 PM

I did that one time - except the most embarrassing part was I was teaching a sewing class. I taught them that was NOT the thing to do.

mythreesuns 06-16-2011 12:32 PM

Oh my heavens...my finger hurts now just thinking about this. I hope this never happens to me..because it may be more then just a dribble that happens... ha ha ha and my floor is carpet. So double the mess to clean up.

Deborahlees 06-16-2011 01:13 PM

Oh yest I have done it also...right thru my finger nail...However I will say once was enough and I have never done it again...It is all in the learning curve....

crafty_linda_b 06-16-2011 01:21 PM

Yep did that before but that was a L-O-N-G time ago...crafty_linda_b

Kehoeta 06-16-2011 01:22 PM

It gives me the creeps even thinking about it.

Angus 06-16-2011 01:51 PM

I as a little kid on a treadle I scream and my mother jerked it out of my finger

You brought a giggle to my heart reading this post. When I bought my first Bernina sewing machine (1230) many, many years ago I was as proud as a peacock. I put my machine up on my kitchen table because I just could'nt wait another moment to take her for a spin. Yup, you guessed it, the moment I turned the machine on and placed the foot on I had my foot on the control and sent the needle right through my middle finger nail and it pushed nearly all the way through. It broke even with my finger nail so I ended up in the ER having the piece of needle left removed. And yes, It hurt ! ! ! ! Lesson well learned, I've never had that problem again. Of course, I'm more careful since then too. Thanks for sharing you special moment, it made my day.
