to put the sewing machine needle through your finger, plus one stitch? Once I put the needle in the up position (after a jerk motion and needle goes down further) I had to cut the thread and take out the thread. Talk about stupid, and hurt.

scrappycats 06-15-2011 04:43 PM

OUCH! be sure you did not get a piece of the needle left in there. Friend at the shop did and had to have surgery to get it out.

MTS 06-15-2011 04:44 PM

Me, me, me!!!

And then, after the initial shriek and profane utterances, you sit and stare at it wondering how that could have happened.

Not one of my finest moments.

EasyPeezy 06-15-2011 04:45 PM

Ouch. Did you have a tetanus shot?

S D G 06-15-2011 04:48 PM

Good Lord you make me hurt just reading your post. Like finger nail on a chalk board.

Sadiemae 06-15-2011 04:52 PM

Been There! Done That! Then you have to pull the needle out. I was lucky in that I had just put in a new needle, so I didn't have to worry about infection. I did it with the Megaquilter, so the needle went all of the way through my finger.

MaryStoaks 06-15-2011 04:57 PM

Owie! Makes me cringe just thinking about it. I've done it before too.

moonwork42029 06-15-2011 04:57 PM

I think almost everyone that has sewn/quilted for any length of time has either did this or come soooooo close you wet your britches.

Keep it clean and do check on the status of your shots, clean needle or not.

My mominlaw did it and had to set til Dad got home she was to scared to rotate the machine to pull the needle out!

erstan947 06-15-2011 05:02 PM

O U C H ! !

purplemem 06-15-2011 05:03 PM

ME! ME! ME! [raising my hand]

Went through the nail and through the finger but did not break the bone. Really hurt.

Kitsie 06-15-2011 05:04 PM

OOOOOOWWWWW! Sorry for all of you especially the Mom that had to sit there till Dad came home!!

debcavan 06-15-2011 05:07 PM

My friend calls her machine Nipper because she got the needle through her finger. She had to wake up her husband to pull it out. He pulled from the hole side down instead of the top out first so he pulled the wider through after the narrow went through. Somehow the next day it still had thread in it.

You weren't the first and you won't be the last.

OneMoreQuilt 06-15-2011 05:07 PM

My sister did, when I was little, and I had to run to get mom to help her. Ouchie!

Just-Lee 06-15-2011 05:09 PM

OMG!! I would faint! Terrified of needles...especially in me! lol

irishrose 06-15-2011 05:18 PM

Sure. Middle of the night - no one up but me. Embedded the needle in the bone. I couldn't get it out, so I had to reach around to the thumbscrew to take out the needle. I woke my husband up with a pair of pliers in one hand and a needle in the bone in the other. Luckily, there was no blood on the pricy silk organga I was working on.

Soak yours in warm, soapy water (antibacterial soap) for 10 minutes twice a day.

caspharm 06-15-2011 05:18 PM

Done it to both forefingers, different machines (one with my D1 and one with my FW) and different times. [Just trying to be one with my machines, I guess (LOL).] Definitely a reason for using a stiletto or something else for a fabric guide. However, I am still using my fingers, just too lazy to remember the stiletto.

Take care.

craftybear 06-15-2011 05:20 PM

ouch ouch, be careful

redmadder 06-15-2011 05:36 PM

Only twice in 38 years of quilting.

Buzzy Bee 06-15-2011 06:09 PM

I ve done that more than a few times...last time it went all the way thru my finger and came out of machinecompleyly...

Dina 06-15-2011 06:22 PM

Oh no, talk about a horror story....no, horror stories!! Ouch, ouch, ouch!! Do not do that again!!!

pugmom 06-15-2011 06:29 PM

OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am just wainting for this to happen to the klutz queen here.

OHSue 06-15-2011 06:31 PM

Ohhhh, my stomach just flipped reading that one....
who knew quilting was such a risky venture!

Painiacs 06-15-2011 06:38 PM

Ouch! Made my sto
Mach turn ! I'll be careful! Sounds awful'!!

JanTx 06-15-2011 06:47 PM

I remember my grandmother doing that and wondering how she could stand it. I'm sure she was calmer than she would have been if I weren't standing there.

Not a needle but a treble fishing hook through the toe and had to cut the end off to remove.

BETTY62 06-15-2011 07:38 PM

May your boo-boo heal fast.

Sadiemae 06-15-2011 08:53 PM

I learned when I reach around the machine to keep my fingers out of the way, instead of hitting the bobbin rewind button I hit the thread cut button. It happens really fast.

merchjag 06-16-2011 02:54 AM

I did that once when I was about 16-Wowzer that hurt-I pulled the needle out so fast I don't remember it going in-

barbpowers 06-16-2011 02:55 AM

My machine attacked me last week. It was jealous that I pulled out another machine for the quilting. I still carry the hole in my fingernail... looks quite interesting. It will be a challenge when I get my nails done for my son's wedding.--- but it's a couple of months away, so probably grown out by then!

Debbie C 06-16-2011 03:21 AM

you are not alone....I recently stitched right through my acrylic fingernail. No injury, just a quick repair with some Crazy Glue!

dunster 06-16-2011 03:22 AM

I hate to admit it but yes, it has happened to me, with the longarm. It went through the nail and part of the finger, not too bad considering what could have happened. From now on let's all be more careful!

Irishrose - I can't believe you were more concerned about the silk organza than about the needle in your bone! You're one dedicated quilter!

Lavada 06-16-2011 03:29 AM

been there done that

SueSew 06-16-2011 03:42 AM

Not stupid, these things happen because our fingers can get in there in the first place. Not like a saw which has a guard to prevent accidents. I hear your pain and I am going right over to look at my Janome to see if I can make it safer for me, as I am a major clutz and my mind wanders when sewing.
Hope you heal quickly! You are brave!!

Plumtree 06-16-2011 03:43 AM

Oh my, I hope its okay now. That is my worst fear to be so deep in thought while I am sewing that I sew my finger.

Owwie. I hope it heals fast.

dinlauren 06-16-2011 04:15 AM

Been there done that recently. Was FMQ and got too close to the needle......OOOOOOOOPS....hurt like heck for a week at least. Oh well........only the second time i've gone through my finger in 30 years of sewing.

VickyOH 06-16-2011 04:16 AM

No stitches taken, but I've done this twice! Guess you were just in the 'zone'!

Tinabodina 06-16-2011 04:17 AM

Ewwwww - I have put it through caught mine by the needle, but never to that extent. Hope you can still sew.

grannie cheechee 06-16-2011 04:20 AM

My friend did that using a treadle machine. She really could make that "Singer" sing. She can laugh about it now.
