More than forty years ago I was doing some mending after a thunderstorm had passed, when another flash of lightening and almost immediate rumble of thunder caused a power surge and the needle went thouugh my left index finger. I had reached for the piece in the machine at just the wrong time. The needle hit the bone and bent to come out on the side of my finger, It didn't hurt, just made me mad at myself. However the needle bent and I could not remove my finger from the machine. I called my sister-in-law who was staying with me. When she saw what had happened she became hysterical. Her screaming brought my eight year old daughter who was calm enough to go to the tool box to get a wire cutter to break the needle with, I had to go to the Hospital to have the darned thing removed as I couldnt get it out and Kathy certainly was no help. I drove the eight miles by myself as I has a five week old baby girl at home and needed Kathy and Donna to care for her till I got back home. Funny thing...it never did hurt.

Owwweeeee! Hurts thinking about it!

Stitchit123 06-16-2011 05:09 PM

Yep and 2 days later- while using my screw gun it slipped off the screw and went through the same hole and my brother said thats not what he meant by pre-drilling Every crowd has at least 1 wise cracker Keep it clean and use anti-biotic cream and Be Careful

i was sewing a white prom dress for a friend and the needle went through the nail tip and the end of my finger. i looked at the white dress, at my finger, at the dress and YANKED. the inside of my finger came out and all the nerves screamed"WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!!" i sat there and thought i'd throw up, or faint, or die. not one drop of blood on the dress!

OWWWW!!! You guys are making my legs hurt with sympathy pains! I haven't done it yet, but I'll guess my turns a comin'! Generally I'm a slow sewer so maybe I can prevent it before it happens...

ccrow99 06-16-2011 06:28 PM

OMG!!! Ouch. Made my knees go weak. My mom did the same thing years ago. Took months to get the nail back. You poor thing. I feel so sorry for you. So not stupid, with good company!!!

Sadiemae 06-16-2011 07:04 PM

The stories about cutting fingers with rotary cutters gives me the chills. At least I didn't have blood with the needle.

Gram22 06-16-2011 07:13 PM

Yes, and obviously there are enough of us could start a special club! I did it several years ago as I was free motion quilting fabric for a roman shade about 11 PM. Didn't move my finger soon enough and the needle went straight through. Tried to pull it out but couldn't get it all. Kept insisting that it would be OK cause I didn't want to go to the ER so late! However between my DH insisting and the PAIN, I went. Believe me, I haven't done it again!

Quilted Horse 06-16-2011 07:14 PM

Oh yeah...been there...done that (more than once I hate to admit). You gotta watch those rotary cutters too - that was a three stitcher!!!

QuiltnLady1 06-16-2011 07:26 PM

Ouch!!!!! How painful!!!

I have only done it through the outside of my finger -- I was using the zipper foot to sew on cording and... oh well I did learn.

bjdemir 06-16-2011 07:27 PM

Been there, done that - more than once over the years. So I feel your pain.

marthahelen 06-16-2011 07:56 PM

Been there, done that! Needle broke and lucky me the tip of the needle was still threaded. My sister had to have the needle cut to get it out of her finger. Oh, that sends shivers thru me.

Peckish 06-16-2011 08:18 PM

Hasn't happened to me, but it did happen to my friend Cindi. She was in a precarious position - couldn't get her finger out from under the needle, couldn't reach the power button or cord (it was a longarm on a frame) and her husband was in a different part of the house and too far away to hear her screaming for him. I don't know how long she had to wait and yell for him before he finally rescued her.

KSue 06-16-2011 08:28 PM

Shuddering.....I have never done it nor do I wish to have the experience...must have hurt like heck!

natalieg 06-16-2011 08:32 PM

Just reading that makes my tummy queasy....hope it heals well!

GrannieAnnie 06-16-2011 08:56 PM

'scuse me, but I think I hear another thread (quilting board thread, that is!) calling!

ouch

rob529 06-16-2011 09:07 PM

My son did it when he was about 4. Get this the machine was not even plugged in. Not a clue how he did it.

oh yep. Been there, done that. Sorry! I feel your pain

snicker dee 06-16-2011 11:36 PM

Many years ago I sewed my finger with a couple of stitches. I worked nites as an RN and was trying to get in a little sewing after shift. THAT woke me up!

justlooking 06-17-2011 02:23 AM

Ouch!

stitchengramie 06-17-2011 02:27 AM

I did that when I took sewing in home economics class when I was in the seventh grade. Boy did that hurt! I learned from that experience to keep my finger out of reach of the needle.

BarbaraSue 06-17-2011 07:35 AM

Yea, I haven't ran the needle into my finger--yet-- but I have had my pinched by the screw on the shank while sewing telling me I'm too close. Then i cut through the tip of my finger with the rotary cutter, twice, two different fingers, two days in a row!
I'll join the stupid club too. I don't remember home ec teacher saying that sewing was hazardous to our health- she kept saying what a economic thing it was.

butterflywing 06-17-2011 11:25 AM

never took that extra stitch, but i ran it through the nailbed and the bone and out the other side. had to take the needle out of the machine and drive to the hospital to have it removed. then i took it home with me because it was my last one. don't do that. it was too blunt to use again.

lheartsl 06-17-2011 11:33 AM

yikes......... I would have fainted for sure!!!

ShirleyAnne 06-17-2011 01:00 PM

I sewed my finger when I was about 6 and don't remember too much about it. Using grandmother's peddle machine and just went through the side flesh.. But about 40 years later I was trout fishing with my 2 preteen sons and put a fish hook through the web of my hand. Oh Lordy! Had to drive 15 miles around the lake to get someone to cut off the hook so i could pull it out backwards to get it out and then 20 country miles to an ER for clean-up and a tetnus shot. Egad! All the kids wanted to know was "will we ever find that fishing hole again?"

RDM 06-17-2011 03:50 PM

Did it when very young but never forgot how it felt....Yucky. Hope your finger heals quickly.

sewhat540 06-19-2011 04:39 AM

I did that many years ago, and had to call the neighbor to come turn the wheel to get it out. Good thing the phone was right next to me and all I had to do was press one number and the phone rang. I can still feel the pain as I read your email. Take care.

janb 06-19-2011 02:19 PM

I dread the day I do this, but I expect it will happen...

ktmo815 06-21-2011 09:40 AM

been there - done that!! broke the needle against my bone too!

Cal Gal 06-21-2011 02:25 PM

My worst nightmare, to sew my finger to the machine and can't reach the phone to call 911.

My husband was using a roofing nailer and sent a nail into his thumb. Couldn't remove, went to er and told the attending doctor' He really isn't into body piercing'!

tryitall 10-17-2011 09:01 AM

OH YES! Thought I was the only one to do that~!!

nativetexan 10-17-2011 09:13 AM

soak your finger in hydrogen peroxide too.

Michellesews 10-17-2011 09:25 AM

Don't feel stupid...we have all done that, I think. The trick is, don't do it again! I went right through my thumb nail on my DSM, then nearly went through my forefinger nail on the longarm. That is when it is time to turn off the lights and go to bed....
