I want to make a purple quilt. I have a great deal of trouble visualizing what a quilt might end up looking like. I am a beginning quilter, but I have already got lots of purple in my stash, and my next quilt will be shades of purple, one way or another.

Has anyone made a Yellow Brick Road in different shades of purple? Does anyone has a pattern they used and liked in purple? I am all ears.

Pamela Artman 04-25-2010 05:55 PM

I've made three scrappy purple quilts... or was it four??? anyway, I LOVE them. I made an appliqued winding way throw size, one bear paw, and one made with big and small 9-patches. here's the link to my picture

Well, I really don't like purple, but I did make this one for my neice who does.

I made a purple Irish chain. There was a small amount of pink and lots of cream. Sorry, don't have a pic.

Dina 04-25-2010 06:08 PM

Oh, these two are beautiful! This just confirms that I want to make one in purple. I am not sure Thank you! Now I am off to research what an Irish chain looks like. I had not thought of cream with purple, but that sounds good too.

Dina 04-25-2010 06:10 PM

Okay, that will teach me to proofread. The sentence I started and them didn't finish was "I am not sure I am good enough for either of these complex patterns." Then I decided it made me sound dumb and delete part of it, but not all of it. So I didn't sound dumb....just sort of looked dumb. :)

I think the key is to use contrasting purples...from very pale, mediums and darks. Or like was suggested, using a cream for your lights. Or toss in a pink, or other color for interest.
My DD wanted one that was all darks, and I wasn't very fond of it, it looked very dreary to me...
If you google "purple quilt images"...you will get hundreds to look at LOL

I think nearly any pattern can be assembled with a monochromatic theme. A couple of other threads active right now are talking about Yellow Brick Road quilts. It's a great beginner quilt and I've seen pics of YBR quilts in single colors that look great.

There is a quilt called Indigo something, maybe Indigo Hopscotch, that is beautiful done in all blues. She said it wasn't terribly complicated to make. Do a search and see what you think of it.

I always recommend Rail Fence for beginners, and it would also make a nice single-color quilt. Look at some of your favorite patterns. You can draw them out on graph paper and color them in with different shades of purple, or just fold and arrange some of your stash to imitate the block. Be sure to post pics of your finished quilt(s).

I have a friend that loves purple and she asked me to make her a quilt using purple. The fabrics are all batiks.

OMG, I am so into making purple quilts. When I started thinking about it, I realize I've made quite a few. Here are some that I've taken pictures of. I also have one that is a tumbling block charm (no 2 pieces are the same fabric) that I hand pieced, just to try it out, and to have something to do "on the road."

I know what you mean, I am wanting to make a purple one too, just don't know what pattern I am going to use.

Here is a picture of one I made with purples.

mom-6 04-26-2010 04:27 AM

I've made a couple of purples & pinks quilts. The main problem with both of them is that I don't have enough contrast in value (light/dark) and all the sorta mediums just blend together. Guess this demands a fabric shopping trip...oh darn...LOL!!!

i have made a bargello, see attached, I also made two identical quilts (around the world) for my girls rooms, I will have to see if i can find those pics.

Dina 04-26-2010 05:11 AM

I love these quilts. They are all so beautiful. I also love this forum. I always get such good information. Now I am going to start analyzing what I want to do with my fabric. I think I need to buy some more light colored fabric, or it will bee too dark, like several of you have mentioned.

Thank you all.

I made this rail fence quilt last year to practice piecing. The varigated material has mostly light and dark purple with a little yellow and red.

I love everyone's quilts! I have made several purple because my older daughter loves purple. My favorite combination is purple with green and pink with some white or cream thrown in.

taiboo 04-26-2010 05:44 AM

I LOVE THIS....very beautiful.

I LOVE purple in my quilts. Here's my log cabin with purples (and obligatory quilt inspector).

Here are some swap blocks I've received set in purples & golds.

gollytwo 04-26-2010 06:35 AM

I made 3 of this pattern in different sized blocks. Pattern was in an old Quilters Newsletter Magazine and was called Radiant Nine Patch
I've been making quilts since the 70s; every quilt I made back then, no matter what my intent, turned into a mainly purple scrap quilt, pale to deep purples.
Good luck

This is what I came up with in EQ5. I call it Sue's Purple Passion. I am making it for my sister.

Bobbielinks 04-26-2010 06:52 AM

I have made one. I call it my purple and green quilt. I used as Asian fabric which contained purple, black, mauve, and pink with a green Michelle Miller fabric called Fairy Frost. You may view a picture of it at http://community.webshots.com/user/barbara4811 It is in the Album "Ozark Empire Fair quilts"

I hadn't made anything with purple as the dominant color, but my daughter's best friend since 5th grade loves purple. She was at our house so much that she became my "other daughter." I made this quilt for her.

Sorry the lighting was really awful in the picture... :-(

Oh and...I forgot to say! I bought a jelly roll that was predominantly purple for the strips.

Bobbielinks 04-26-2010 06:59 AM

Oh my gosh! Everyone's quilts are so beautiful! Thank you, each and everyone for posting pictures! One of these days I will learn how to post pictures to this site. But right now I invite you to go to http://community.webshots.com/user/barbara4811 to view quilts that I have quilted for other people. I have made just a few of my own quilts but my customers love seeing their quilts on the above site.

And another one .... this is current a WIP - it's waiting for the top edge to be unpicked and restyled (layout in the center is staying the same).
