I never used anything special for my children. I always used either Tide or Cheer. I always wash my quilts before I give them. When I get anything new, gift or from store, I always wash it first. Never know where it's been. I figure it's the parents responsibility to take care of things for their children.

I didn't realize there was such a thing as baby detergent.

Us older people survived a lot as kids - my mom didn't use special detergent to wash baby clothes. (And we rode bikes without helmets.) You can put white vinegar in the rinse cycle, that would take care of scents.

I wash baby quilts with our regular detergent, usually that is Tide. I just use a little detergent and no fabric softener. This doesn't leave them highly scented nor should there be any residue. I like to make sure that they hold up in the washer. I think most parents wash new baby items before they use them, anyway, and if not that's ok, too. Now days, with the advice to not put anything in the bed with the baby, including quilts and blankets it is likely that the baby won't have contact with the quilt for quite a while.

I usually wash the baby quilts I give in a fragrance free detergent and do not use fabric softener. I have allergies myself, so I always use fragrance free products.

I have to agree with Material Witness. As kids, we did TONS of things that are real "no-nos" these days & I have to say I'm healthier than most young people I know today. I have made quite a few baby quilts & always wash them in the same soap that I use for my regular wash (All Free). Baby will be just fine!

Arm and Hammer have a washing soda. I use All-free. But any detergent free of fragrance and dyes should be good. I would want to have all the kinks out of the gift before giving. And free dryer sheets or a wash cloth dampened with distilled vinegar is good with wrinkles and softening.

I gave my baby quilt away plus oral instructions to new dad about washing before giving to baby. He remembered the instructions and new mum was delighted with the new look after washing in her preferred liquid.

I would wash it with what you normally use and let the mom know it had been washed and what you had used. You want to make sure there is no bleeding or othe problem before you gift the quilt.

I just use my regular detergent when washing baby or other quilts. Explain to the new mom to use whatever detergents she uses and it will be fine.
