You sound just like me I cringe at the thought of following directions, I am much more the fly by the seat of my pants, or dance naked in the moonlight type! lol

Beautiful - fantastic job!

NZquilter 03-22-2017 06:30 AM

I admire your skill and patience! It's coming along beautifully!

feline fanatic 03-22-2017 06:54 AM

There are many patterns that allow you to improvise and do things another way but Judy Niemeyer Quiltworx patterns are not among those. That is why she has certified instructors and certain patterns are only available when you take the class.

My first Niemeyer quilt was not nearly as complex as this one (Agave Garden) and I read through those instructions at least 4 times before making my first cut. Saved a lot of frustration!

Looks like you are on track now. But word to the wise is to not improvise on Quiltworx patterns.

MarionsQuilts 03-22-2017 11:30 AM

Feline Fanatic - yeah, I learned that right quick!!! I'd figured since I had made the double wedding ring, it couldn't be that much different hahahahahaha the joke was on me! But, at least it was early days!

And I keep reminding myself that I this was supposed to be my challenge for 2017 ... and that I was supposed to take the year to get it done! Patience is not my strongest point, but I have been learning to acquire it with this pattern.

Again, it's not hard at all, it's just very tedious and precise!

minibarn 03-22-2017 07:09 PM

Looking good.

Mary Christine 03-27-2017 05:17 AM

You're doing a fabulous job with this!

Here's my progress to date ... I thought I needed 7x7 squares, but when I put it on my bed, it came down too far (almost to the floor) When you have a cat and a dog and a parrot, NOTHING should touch the floor LOL ... So I took it down to 6x6, but what I am going to do is finish the stars on each side, and then add about 3-4 inches for a border all the way around, and then bind.

Beautiful work. It is going to be stunning.

oc quilter 03-30-2017 05:31 PM

Wow, that is beautiful

JanieH 03-30-2017 05:59 PM

I agree with pewa88, it will be stunning!

So, I know I'm not supposed to sew it all together yet, but I broke down and did it anyway (I did leave about 2 inches from the bottom so I can work with that!)

I can't leave my quilting stuff out since I share my room with my african grey parrot (OMG - can you imagine LOL) ... and I was getting tired of piecing it all back together to figure out the next row!

So here it is all sewn together ... 2 more rows to go!

I have to say, I'm pretty impressed with myself!!! It's all laying nice and flat ... my patience is paying off!

Can I get one after her?

Seriously, it is stunning!

Macybaby 04-03-2017 08:19 AM

your pictures are so making me want to add this pattern to my bucket list - love your colors too.

Doggramma 04-03-2017 10:36 AM

That's funny about your parrot. I don't blame you for starting the sewing. It is just stunning.

MarionsQuilts 04-03-2017 12:00 PM

Thanks all ... and no, I'm sorry, I do believe this is one those "ONLY ONCE" quilts!!!!

Vistacruise 04-04-2017 04:26 AM

I did one of Judy's feathered stars about 3 years ago. I just finished quilting it this past January and named it "Never Again"

Your colors are perfect for this pattern. Can't wait to see you put the last stitch on the binding

CarolinePaj 04-04-2017 02:48 PM

Simply Stunning.... you have done an amazing job! It is going to be a fabulous quilt when it is finished.

Hugs

Caroline

This quilt is amazingly beautiful!!!

minibarn 04-04-2017 06:46 PM

Well, I tried. It will never be on my bucket list as I am not that talented.

feline fanatic 04-06-2017 04:39 AM

I am eagerly awaiting you to finish this beauty. Please give the finished product its own thread so I don't miss it!

I have a suggestion for doing layout when little paws, or in your case beaks, have other plans. Get a flannel-backed plastic table cloth, and the cardboard tube from a roll of batting (my LQS saved me one when I asked). Do your layout on the fuzzy side of the tablecloth. You can lay it out on the floor, or on a bed, taped to a wall, etc. The fuzz helps hold the pieces in place. To store it, roll it around the tube. The plastic backing will be against the pieces as you roll, so they won't move.

I had used the tablecloth for layout for ages, but the cardboard tube felt like a stroke of genius. Since then I've heard of other people doing the same thing with a pool noodle.

Oh, and your quilt is gorgeous :) You're making amazing progress; I can't wait to see it finished! Have you thought how you're going to quilt it yet?

SewingSew 04-06-2017 06:00 AM

I will be watching for your progress. This will look amazing with your color scheme. Red is my favorite color, and I am in love with your fabric. Your quit is going to be exquisite!

MarionsQuilts 04-06-2017 11:38 AM

Jennifer 23 - that is a fabulous idea!!!!! Thank you so much ... you know what's even funnier? I used to do puzzles, and I had a felt piece for my puzzles ... you would think I would have thought of that!

I will definitely be buying some fuzzy fabric in the near future!

I don't know if I'm going to quilt it or if I'm going to have my friend quilt it. There is a member on here - Krista - who lives in my city, and does long arm quilting. She's done about 5 or 6 of my quilts, and does a fabulous job.

I don't like free motion (OK, I'm horrible at it LOL), and I think this one is just too big (it will be 96x96 when I'm done) to do on my sewing machine. I have a fabulous machine, just don't like quilting with that big of a quilt. Too bulky, and I get frustrated when I have to stop and go all the time.

I pieced this quilt top in less that 2 months! I was completely shocked that it went together that quickly! I'll be dropping it off at the quilter's next week... can't wait to see what they do with it! I'd love to see a picture of your progress also. Your fabrics are so pretty!

JanieH 04-07-2017 09:25 AM

auntierah09 - your quilt is stunning. I can't believe how fast you did it. I would still be cutting fabric.

You and MarionsQuilts are so inspiring!

MarionsQuilts 04-07-2017 03:31 PM

Nice job Auntierah09! I wish I could have had it done in two months!!! Between working all day, and then working my dog, I only have about 3 hours a day to quilt LOL ...

There are lots of pictures in this thread - it's my thread, I started it, so if you start at the beginning you'll see the progress!

I'm finishing mine differently though ... I am going to make it square ... so all my stars will finish off!!!!

Quilter 65 04-08-2017 04:57 PM

We need a WOWZA button. That is simply so beautiful. Love the colors.

MarionsQuilts 04-12-2017 11:37 AM

Note to self .... next time you are making an "odd shaped" quilt and decide you are going to square it ... make this decision BEFORE you sew it all together! what a PITA LOL

kristakz 04-14-2017 08:57 AM

It's looking wonderful, Marion! Can't wait to see it in person.

MarionsQuilts 04-14-2017 03:16 PM

Kristakz - you might regret that LOL ... I'm almost done ... Just have the corners to do.

For the people that are following this thread, Krista is the fabulous person who does my long arm quilting!!!!!! And such an amazing job of it too!

sgray7169 04-14-2017 05:57 PM

I have this pattern but have not tried it yet - I'll watch to see how you make out - maybe I'll attempt to do mine.

MarionsQuilts 04-15-2017 03:59 AM

sgray7169 - it's not hard. It's just a LOT of paper piecing and making sure you are VERY organized.

Also - if you want it to be square and not scalloped then plan this ahead ... I am now sewing on "extras" to square it off LOL ... it's very bulky and annoying!

Boston1954 04-15-2017 05:19 AM

I love that pattern! Cannot wait to see your rich reds and grey-blacks all sewn up. Good luck.

( a bit later ) - I just went through the pages and saw all the progress pictures. I am in AWE! I love it. You are doing a tremendous job. If I were there with you, I'd give you a hug and a Snickers bar.

Also, I want to say to auntierah09 that you quilt is gorgeous too. You both do beautiful work.

Boston1954 04-15-2017 05:45 AM

I just wanted to add that it is wonderful that you are taking so many "in progress" pictures for yourself AND for us.

OK! I'm 99% done!!!! I just need to decide what colour border - red or black? Help!

I made it square since I didn't like the scalloped edges!
