We all end with with loose threads from cutting or sewing or ironing our material no way to prevent it . I had a friend that showed me a neat tool that picks it easy and fast . It was purchased from the a Dollar store and it is like a lint brush only it is like rubber on the plastic roller and comes in two sizes that i found . All you do is roll over the cutting table or where you have thread you want picked up and it clings to it. I even use it to pick up small pieces of material .Once the roller is full- wash it in cold water and all the threads come off .Let the roller dry and you are good to use it again . Best thing i found so far that works and is cheap to buy.

I use those sticky rollers, which work fine, but this would be reuseable so that is a big plus with me!

craftybear 09-19-2011 12:14 PM

Wow, that is a great tip

I bought a set at a quilt show and for me turned out to be a waste of $. a set of 3 sizes. normal, tiny and one for the carpet. Doesnt take but a few swipes to cover it, then you have to wash it, wait to dry then do it agai. I just threw the tiny one away the other day and when I come across the normal size its going out too along with the carpet one. There is a reason they are now in the dollar store. I paid $25 for the floor one and the others were a "bonus". If I had bought them at the dollar store I probably wouldnt feel bad about tossing them. I buy the disposable ones in bulk at Costco. I like the idea of having things that dont fill up the landfills, but I also like things that work and last.

cathyvv 09-19-2011 12:58 PM

I just bring a quilt out...all the loose thread flock to it!

Now here's what I really do - vacuum with a dust buster type vacuum. It's lightweight, i always know where it is and it does the job.

Jazzz 09-19-2011 01:19 PM

OK now I have to work in a trip to the dollar store lol. Always looking for a good "green" way to clean up after making a rag quilt. Thanks so much for the tip...Wish me luck at our local dollar store.

Great Ideal !! THANKS

I brush my surfaces with a soft fox tail brush and then sweep the floor. One brush will last a person's lifetime. I bought mine in an artist supply store.

I have a set, I do like them for some things, like thread, but the regular lint rollers are more versatile. They do fill up quickly.

Our board member Carron posted a suggestion to picking up threads off the carpet by using a (brand new) toilet brush. Sure works good and keeps the threads out of my vacuum roller.

Carron 09-19-2011 03:46 PM

I have these in four sizes, a super large one for the carpets....love them.

jaciqltznok 09-19-2011 04:24 PM

I love these....I have them everywhere around the house., car, purse...

Blue Bell 09-19-2011 04:25 PM

Thanks for sharing. I will have to look for it.

Dollar store, dang I bought mine at Sears a few years back and paid a hefty price like 38.00 for 4 different sizes.

deedum 09-19-2011 05:28 PM

darn, I just stopped in at the dollar store tonite. Great idea! thanks!

mawluv 09-20-2011 03:52 AM

I wrapped the end of a yard stick with velcro(not the soft side but the bristly side) about 3 inches. It works great getting all the threads from your quilt and also from the floor. No bending over and you can reach all kinds of places, also picks up small pieces of fabric.

taryn72 09-20-2011 04:03 AM

Love your tip, am on my way to the $ store. THANKS

Yep, same here. I like the idea of something reusable. But they simply did not work for me. I once had one to get cat and rabbit hair off my clothes. It was covered so quickly with fluffs from my clothes, I never got anywhere with cleaning the hair off.

caspoohbear 09-20-2011 04:18 AM

Menards keeps having the tear-off lint rollers for free after rebate, so that's what I've been using, also if I wear fleece or flannel jammies, the threads end up on me instead of the floor!

Lori J 09-20-2011 05:14 AM

I bought some at a quilt show. Spent a fortune. Then found that Harbor Freight had the exact item for much less.

sguillot 09-20-2011 05:19 AM

There is also a lint roller that has sticky tape on it, you use it then pull one part of and a clean one is left. I have had one for a long time and there is still plenty of tape on it. You just roll it over the surface and everything sticks to it then you pleal a layer off and it's clean and ready to use again.

i am going to look for this at my dollar store..i use lint rollers, but i have to keep buying them, and buying them, and buying them..........

GlitzyMe 09-20-2011 06:20 AM

Doesn't Harbor Freight seem to come up often? Maybe it's time for a slow walk-thru and see what other potential quilting tools they have.

majormom 09-20-2011 06:29 AM

While you are rinsing the threads and lint off the roller, aren't the threads and lint going down the drain? Don't you ever get a plugged up drain?
I got a tip from somewhere to use a clean, never used toilet brush to brush up the threads. I brush everything into a pile and pick it all up with my hands and throw it away. A lot of the threads also stick to the brush so I clean that off at the end as well and throw the threads into the wastebasket. All Done! No clogged drains! No refills for a lint roller to buy! I should say that I have carpeting on the floor where I sew :XD:  :XD:  but I have to leave it there because I live in an apartment with wall to wall carpeting.

I use the tape kind and throw the tape away. Be careful washing all those threads down your drain; you could end up with a plumbing problem.

lenette 09-20-2011 07:12 AM

I also paid quilt-show price for a set and regretted it. Became too hard to keep washing, and filled up so quickly.

selm 09-20-2011 08:16 AM

I have a canister vacuum. I use just the wand to pick up all visible threads before I vacuum with the carpet tool. No threads caught up in the roller bar.

unclefreckles 09-20-2011 09:38 AM

great idea. I will have to cruise the Dollar store.

Gramie bj 09-20-2011 10:04 AM

Im off to the doller store! I'm tired of chasing thread snips all over the place, I bet it would work good on Otis too! LOL I have a screen in my sink drain to catch things that I don.t want to go down the drain ,we are on out own septic system, when it gets full just dump into the trash no harder that taking out the sink stoper!

sasissy 09-20-2011 10:19 AM

Super idea! I hope that I can find one.

LadyElisabeth 09-20-2011 10:21 AM

I never thought of those. My best friend usually clips threads for me, maybe his next job will be the roller thing.

Macie 09-20-2011 10:39 AM

I use the Pantiliners I wrap it around my hand and just use the sticky part to pick up all threads. Works great for me

That is a really smart idea. There is just nothing like having to get all those threads off the brushes of a vacuum that are all tightly wound around. I have an upright vacuum and so have to get the stuff up with my magic toilet brush (see my post above) before I can vacuum the room.

CactusFlower 09-20-2011 10:47 AM

Thanks for the tip. I LOVE you Avatar!

JudithAnn 09-20-2011 10:57 AM

I use masking tape rolled around my hand.

damaquilts 09-20-2011 11:16 AM

I went nuts trying to find something to pick up threads on this velcro carpet. I tried vacuum, broom, rake, another vacuum, and finally got a big sticky roller, its takes about 5 strips to do my floor but it is now mostly thread free. And I am happy. I had one of those blue wash off ones a few years back for pet hair. Didn't work all that well for me either.

Ohhh...great idea. I will have to try it.

Billy 09-20-2011 11:50 AM

Harbor Freight is one of my favorite stores. I bought a long handle Magnet that is great for picking up needles and pins that have hidden themselves in the carpet. Try it. It would work on all kinds of floors. Usually cost around 9.00
