Which is the bigger devil?
I am thoroughly amazed by the quilts and work I see online. I watch this board closely as well as Pinterest.
Both of them have sparked so many ideas I want to try! I have several notes written down from forum people here I want to do....and when I looked at my quilt board on Pinterest, I found I have several HUNDRED pinned on there. Some were merely pinned for color combo effects or stitching tutorials, but many were patterns I fell in love with. I'll never get that many quilted in my lifetime! LOL Which is the bigger devil for you.....this forum or Pinterest. Or other? :) Just curious! |
I find my inspiration mostly here. At least here, you can contact the quilter with any question using our PM email.
|
this one is #1 for me.
|
I rarely go to Pinterest as I'll be there for hours. LOL
I use Google Image search when I'm looking for quilt inspiration. |

I use Google Image search when I'm looking for quilt inspiration. Another source of inspiration for me is Judi Madsen's blog ( http://www.greenfairyquiltsblog.com/ ). Her stuff is just astounding!! I also like Lisa Calle's work and rulers ( https://www.lisahcalle.com/ ). I also had a friend selling alot of quilt stuff - books, fabrics, etc - that was his mom's. I just got about 5 books from him for an amazing price. And while a couple of them are really old for technique (1988 is the oldest), there is still a lot to be inspired by. And my favorite "thing" for inspiration is Cosmatesque architecture. Ahhh, THAT is inspiration!!! |
QuiltingBoard is where I go for information.. I don't go to pinterest too often and when I do I am distracted by gardening and chickens on the site.:) I do get magazines and have 3- 3in binders with patterns in plastic sleeves.
|
Pinterest for me. but I go mostly for inspiration and ideas. Love Pinterest.

The bigger devil for me is "ME". I spend way too much time on here and the internet. The QB is a temptation, but I OUGHT to be able to control my response to the temptation. (sometimes I actually do!)
However, I have learned that I rarely go back to look at what I have pinned or bookmarked, so that is under control. But eye candy - fabrics! - can't resist looking! Sometimes I think I only quilt as an excuse to look at fabric and buy it! |
Interesting title for this thread - - - :D
I have yet to figure out how to navigate Pinterest - so the QB is my attention-getter. |
I actually get most of my inspiration from the "real world" - my husband laughs at me because I am always snapping pictures of things that inspire me - could be a pattern on a fabric (hotel fabrics are great for quilt ideas) or maybe a tile floor, or maybe just patterns a fence is making with shadows on the ground.
A lot of it doesn't directly translate into a specific quilt, but that's the kind of thing that excites me and makes me feel creative. When I'm actually MAKING a quilt, often my 'inspiration' is guided by how much I have of the fabrics I want to use. And by mistakes I make along the way, LOL. I also doodle on graph paper a lot, and often play around in Eq7, looking for interesting pattern repeats if I twist common blocks this way or that. I've "made" probably hundreds of electric quilts, but most haven't made their way into fabric yet! |
I am confused by Pinterest, so I don't go there. I am not a prolific quilter, mojo comes and goes, other things to do. I get some inspiration here, on line, at the quilt store, etc.
|
This is the only quilting site I visit regularly. I got in the habit of saving pictures of quilts quilting and/or pleasing color schemes to my hard drive way before pinterest was launched. I have a hundred or so. I go thru all the images about once a month and discard those that no longer pique my interest.
|
My true inspiration comes from the quilt I need to make next. So if I have new baby coming, or a birthday gift, or whatever I usually gear my quilt based on the reason for the quilt. But I do snap pictures from time to time. And the last time I was at Disneyland I was in the bathroom and noticed the floor was hexagons. It was pretty and I have been working on the EPP project so thought I would snap a picture. I was actually in a stall when I took the picture so people wouldn't think I was too weird, but when the camera made its click I wondered what the people near me must have thought.

LOL....I am addicted to both!
But have learned SO much from the people here.....still lots to learn, though! |
Pinterest is a time suck :)and I only allow myself 2 hours of connectivity a day.
I have a quilty ideas photo folder and I save quilt images to that. |
If I'm on the computer I will usually visit here -- I get lots of tips and tricks, along with links to wonderful quilts. I get frustrated with Pinterest -- the same thing can show up multiple times and without a pattern. I figure why bother with just a picture!
|
Instagram is my favorite place for lots of inspiration. I like it way better than Pinterest. I finally figured out why. Pinterest makes it very easy to repin someone else's photo and less easy to pin your own. Instagram is the opposite - super easy to post your own photo and not very easy to repost someone else's. So I see lots more variety on Instagram, as well as fewer of those "only doable by people with full-time staff" type of projects that tend to go round and round on Pinterest.
|
Pinterest ideas, but also lots of ideas from my quilt clubs and modern guild. Yesterday I bought some neat "skyscraper" fabric. It was blacker on the bottom going up to really light gray for the sky. I also was buying a NY beauty book. The gal cutting the fabric said oooh, wouldn't the NY beauty blocks be neat with the skyscraper fabric. So ideas happen all over fortunately or unfortunately! So many ideas, too many ideas

Pinterest is ADT (addicting-digital-hoarding). But a good place to find ideas for any project in any realm of crafting that one could ever do, some we may never have heard of of dreamed could exist.
I advise anyone to keep a timer next to your computer and when set and alarm goes off, turn off the alarm, turn off the computer and join the real world. |
I come to this board if I need inspiration -- sometimes it is a pattern and sometimes it is the mix of colors. Pinterest is information over load for me.

Im with you! Pinterest is just a hodge podge of stuff..some new, some just ads, a lot just pics with no other info......like looking thru scrapbooks of total strangers...and can lead to some scary sites! I steer clear

This is my biggest spot for losing track of time. Every morning with coffee, I am reading this board. I can be here a long time!! Sometimes I stop in at Pinterest but I have a hard time getting around there. Lucky for me because then I would never get anything done. I love looking at everyone's quilts. Love this site!!

This Quilting Board reigns supreme for me. The intereaction among members is great. I rarely open any of my quilting books anymore. Google Image is also handy. And then there are the MSQC tutorials! Love them.
|
This is my only source of entertainment. This board is marvelous!
|
I stay away from Pinterest simply because I waste so much time going from one thing to another to a site trying to find a pattern or person to contact about a pattern. Probably could have made several quilts with the time I spend there - LOL! I love coming here to the board for so much information, beautiful pictures and answers to quilting problems I might face in the future. There is so much support here - everyone is great!
|
I have given up Pinterest but always come here!
|
I save things to Pinterest all the time, but I find I rarely get around to going back to see what I've pinned. It seems like there're always new things to look at. So I'm not sure how much inspiration I'm really getting from Pinterest, although I enjoy it.
|
Both are crazy! I am amazed/inspired/envious of all the creative juices I see flowing on both the sites. The thing I really love is to see the unusual color combos. Things I would never have dreamed to put together. I agree with you that there is no way I will live long enough to make a dent in my projects to do list. But, daily I thank all of you for all the inspiration.
|
I'm on this board at least 5 days out of a week lurking and looking about. I pin things on PInterest and that's about it. I saved a lot of things in favorites and thank goodness for alphabetical order or knowing just about where it is I'm looking for.
|
Pinterest definitely.
|
I'm fairly new to the quilting world, so Pinterest has really been a starting point for me. My first quilt (not finished yet) was a pattern I saw on Pinterest. Although, my points aren't exact, I do think the top came out fairly good for a first try. I only know what I've read on there and on here. To be honest, it's overwhelming, but I love it !
|
This board is , hands down, my absolute favorite. All of you are my inspiration. So many fantastic ideas, patterns, & knowledge. Someone always has answers for you if you run into a snag.

I have yet to figure out how to navigate Pinterest - so the QB is my attention-getter. Sometimes I can spend hours on the computer and not even realize it. I must have ADHD, because I can get so distracted that I don't get things done that I am suppose to do. When I worked, I got more done in less time. Retired, I get a whole lot less done. In fact, sometimes I feel like Jell-O, taken out of its mold, sitting on a plate on a warm day. |
I have way too many "I want to make or try." Here, various quilting blogs, Pinterest, magazines.
|
Pinterest is cold and impersonal. The QB is warm and inviting. Guess which I prefer?
|
I don't like pintrest can't figure out how to navigate and don't like that I have to have a sign in account just to look. I google search most, and then there are the images here, and a couple of face book quilt groups I'm in.
