I prefer hand sewing on the back, but understand why some prefer machine.

I still prefer to do my binding just the opposite. I machine stitch to the back and hand sew to the front.

everything exactly the same for me!

I machine sew the front, hand sew the back using ladder stitch. Very relaxing.

I sew the binding to the front while the quilt is still on my longarm machine. It makes a very crisp and clean finish that way. Then, after the quilt is removed from the frame and all of the excess batting and backing is removed, I fold the binding to the back and stitch by hand. I just like the looks of a hand-finished binding the best of all finishes.

Helped with the judging of a local county fair quilt show yesterday, and yes I am wiped out today!!!! There were several quilts where the binding was done completely by machine but only one passed the judges' inspection. It's pretty hard to get it on straight. I can never get it straight. Have tried several times to do it by machine buy wind up unsewing and doing it by hand.

I heard somewhere if it's something like placemats, baby quilts, tablerunners (items that will be washed often), sew it by machine so stitching doesn't come out in the wash.

Good luck!!!!

I was doing hand sewing on the back but have recently started to do it by machine. Now if it is bed sized I do it by machine and wall size by hand.

I love the look of hand sewing on the back, but my hands no longer allow me the pleasure, so I am thankful to be able to machine stitch them to the back and flip them to the front and then sew them down.

it really depends on what i am making.....mug rugs, table runners, baby quilts, all get machined stitched....but bigger, nicer quilts get hand sewn........

I used to think I would prefer doing the bindings by machine, but I like the relaxing handwork, which is weird because it is the only handwork I do!
