I hand sew to the back all my "good" quilts. If it is to be for my grandchildren, I sew by machine because they get so much wear and tear.

Stitching final step of the binding , is a personal preference, I have been doing more by machine and like the results... but it takes a bit of practice and fiddling with your machine and feet to decide what gives the best results. |
I always machine stitch my binding on. I have gotten pretty good at Stitch in the Ditch. I have bursitis in my right shoulder so hand work is painful. I also like the security of a machine stitched binding.

I sew the binding to the back, bring it to the front and top stitch with the machine. I managed sewing factories that made pieced, free form machine quilted comforters, bedspreads & this was one of the methods we used there.

I machine bing, hands hurt to much to stitch by hand. Wish I could hand stitch though.

I love to hand stitch binding to the back as it re-acquaints me with my beautiful quilt. I get to enjoy the feel of the cottons, alsoI get to enjoy the colors and patterns close up and personal! It seems like a miracle has happened when I hold it. Nothing quite like being satisfied with the work of your hands....and mind.

Machine all. the way.I do only king or queen sized and my quilts are all used and washed .The machine sewing holds up.My shoulders and wrist could not stand the weight with the hand sewing.

I do both. If it is a quilt to be entered for competition, it needs to be bound by hand. If it is a quilt that I have spent loads of time and effort piecing and quilting, I hand bind those as well. But if it is one that I make for the grandkids that gets drug about and washed often...I double the binding and machine bind. I also offer binding to my customers and 80% of what I do is by machine (probably because it is cheaper). I always ask how it will be used and then ask if they prefer single or doubled binding.

I put the binding on by machine then hand sew it down either the back or the front depending on the look that i want....
