binding help

I am making this orphan block into a lap quilt or wall hanging for a friend. I liked the colors in the Jacobean fabric from my stash, although I'm not sure it suits the mood of the house block.

Anyway, I thought I would use the plaid bias binding but now wondering if it doesn't suit the style of the flowered fabric either. Maybe the brown fabric would be better. (I tried the beige fabric too but think it is too blah--I don't have enough of that fabric anyway.) I also have the muslin colored fabric with the light green print, although I didn't audition that for binding. The rest of the fabrics in the quilt are from my scraps.

What do you think?

TexasSunshine 06-19-2014 05:37 AM

I like the bias plaid but it does get lost a little with the flowers so bold, the brown is good, I also think a dark blue would be a good choice.

Eisy 06-19-2014 05:39 AM

I like the brown.

carslo 06-19-2014 05:40 AM

I like the brown - it frames the quilt like a mat on an oil painting!

auntpiggylpn 06-19-2014 05:41 AM

I like the brown fabric. I think it works because it is the same as your inner border.

i do like the plaid border too but I think that it is too busy with the Jacobean fabric, which is beautiful btw. Your center is very nice but not fancy smancy and I think the floral with the plaid will detract from the center.

bigsister63 06-19-2014 05:43 AM

I like the red plaid binding best. however I also am not quite sure if the floral border is the best choice.(as you had mentioned). Maybe a border in the red plaid as the border

nanna-up-north 06-19-2014 05:59 AM

I like the red plaid.

KwiltyKahy 06-19-2014 06:04 AM

I like the brown.

The brown is my choice. I always use the darkest fabric in the quilt unless I am matching the border as my binding. It just frames the quilt nicely.

Jeanne S 06-19-2014 06:54 AM

My vote is for the dark brown. The plaid just doesn't do anything for me and seems a little busy with the floral. But I am not very adventurous either....

Kitsie 06-19-2014 06:55 AM

I like the brown that matches the inner border. Nice quilt!

joe'smom 06-19-2014 07:54 AM

I love that red plaid with the floral, but I think the brown works better as the binding, and I agree that the floral seems a bit ornate for the simplicity of the quilt interior.

Tartan 06-19-2014 08:00 AM

I like the dark brown/red binding best. Great top!

Terri D. 06-19-2014 08:23 AM

My vote is for the brown.

susie-susie-susie 06-19-2014 08:25 AM

I like the brown--the red plaid is too busy for the flowered border. I also like the flowered border very much. It is a good contrast to the simple center block. I really like your quilt and your choice of fabrics.

i vote for the look in the last picture

CurliQ 06-19-2014 11:50 AM

I do like the red plaid but here's another vote for the brown. It's a pretty awesome quilt.

bj 06-19-2014 12:12 PM

I vote for the brown. It ties in nicely with the brown border around the house block. The plaid seems a little busy next to the floral border. I think your house quilt us quite adorable.

sahm4605 06-19-2014 12:14 PM

I vote for the brown as well. It looks better to me.

Feathers-N-Fur 06-19-2014 01:10 PM

Another vote for brown. I love the floral border against the simple center block. Fantastic use for an orphan block.

nativetexan 06-19-2014 01:25 PM

I like it but perhaps you could applique a few flowers below the house block. that would make it work better. Oh , the binding. the brown looks best. just not plaid.

ube quilting 06-19-2014 01:47 PM

Your choice is terrific, imho. As far as the binding, I love the whimsy of the plaid and I love the richness of the dark brown.
tough choice to make. For myself I would use the plaid for a friend I would use the dark brown, 'cause they just wouldn't understand the plaid.

Love the whole quilt! Please let us know which way you choose.
peace

tessagin 06-19-2014 01:54 PM

I agree with TexasSunshine. I think a dark blue like in the flowers would be a great binding color.

Marilynsue 06-19-2014 02:52 PM

Red plaid for me thanks!

RedGarnet222 06-19-2014 02:55 PM

I like the rusty orange plaid on myself. It gives it that homey country look.

evelyn5269 06-19-2014 03:08 PM

My vote is the brown also. The plaid blends right in with the print and you don't really see it.

ILoveToQuilt 06-19-2014 04:30 PM

 brown

Love the quilt!

jo bauer 06-19-2014 05:25 PM

I love this quilt! I especially like the floral print--can't you just see that as wallpaper in the house. As for the binding, what's your mood and taste, or your friend's taste. Brown has more votes, but red plaid is more whimsical. I think either one is fine.

ann31039 06-19-2014 05:34 PM

i like the brown.

Island Queen 06-19-2014 06:24 PM

My vote is brow too. It finishes off the quilt..

Brown I think looks better

solstice3 06-20-2014 06:12 AM

I like the plaid.

pokeygirl 06-20-2014 07:05 AM

Nice quilt. You do wonderful work. I love it.

Taughtby Grandma 06-20-2014 08:35 AM

I like the brown. It adds a nice frame

fangman 06-20-2014 09:00 AM

Your quilt is beautiful, and I also vote for the brown.

michelleoc 06-20-2014 09:21 AM

I think the brown gives it a little more cohesiveness.

Marcia_PA 06-20-2014 09:31 AM

Thanks you for all of your thoughts and suggestions. The more I looked at the quilt and the border, the more I thought they were mismatched. They matched in color, but not in style. So I unstitched the border :( I like the border fabric but think I'll save it for another, more formal, medallion-type center. Maybe Carolina lilies or flower baskets!

I shopped Joann fabrics (only fabric store in town besides Walmart), bought some other border fabric, brought it home and wasn't satisfied with it. So on a trip to Walmart this morning I bought a pink/rose 'cottage rose' fabric on a light blue background that I think will work better. It's a less formal style. I'll post a photo here when I get it together.

fivepaws 06-20-2014 10:10 AM

Brown--please!!

ellifour 06-20-2014 10:34 AM

I agree with joe'smom, the red plaid with the floral, brown frames better, and agree about the floral.
It a lovely fabric, perhaps on another quilt.

Here is the quilt with the new border fabric. I don't like the fabric as well as the original but I think it better fits with the center block. I added a little striped flange for a break between the two blue fabrics.

I've been thinking of adding some applique in the sashing around the house block, but don't know if I'll do that. It might be more work than I want to do and the space isn't that big--maybe 3 inches top & bottom and sides a little less. Maybe I'll look for some buttons to sew around it. I just don't know!

I'll probably bind it with a medium blue fabric--I guess that means another trip to Joanns! I want to have it completely done by next Thursday :)
