has anyone made quilty items with fabric that has designs on a black background?
i have a whole bunch grouped together, but am sort of at a loss as to what to make with them...
any suggestions? photos may help..thanks in advance...

hard to tell without seeing the fabric. describe more what you mean by designs on balack background. are the designs in color or just another black.

I agree with Holice. Can you send photos? I LOVE working with black backgrounds and carried several of them in my shop years ago. But lately I haven't seen as many good ones as we used to see. I'm talking tone-on-tone blacks, smallish prints, saturated color almost like patent leather, no bleediing.

Here is a picture of how I used the tone on tone blacks for background. The red is a Hawaiian type print. Red is all the same print but many blacks.

I love the contrast of colors on black, black really makes them sing :D:D:D

I had a whole bunch of black background scraps that I had collected not knowing what to do with them ....I made a quilt. Charisma quilted it and posted it here:

Gorgeous quilts, excuse me while I go drool in the corner. LOL I'm a big fan of black with brights as well. I think you could go the other route and do something like grays, blacks, and whites, and it could look neat too.

Beautiful quilts!!

whinnytoo 08-06-2011 03:18 PM

I love blk backgrounds and those quilts are awesome!

ghostrider 08-06-2011 03:30 PM

I use black a lot, solids and tone on tones both. Yes, they are great with brights,

but they also can have great impact with more subtle colors.

I just finished my first quilt top with black background and black sashing and I will never do it again. It was very hard for me to see.

I love to use black in my sashing--makes the blocks stand out so you really see the patterns.

patchsamkim 08-07-2011 04:32 AM

I made my brother a Card Trick using 4 different brights on black background. I liked it so much I almost kept it. If I hadn't been sending him update pics while I was making it, I WOULD have kept it. any way he loved it. Now I'm making an optical illusion wall hanging with black background for his office. I'm really starting to LOVE black. All of the picures posted are just gorgeous!!

I made this quilt for donation. The pattern is called "Easy Quilt" and it is!

jillaine 08-07-2011 06:21 AM

These are awesome quilts, ladies. I believe the original poster is seeking examples of quilts that use black fabric with prints on the black. Ie black is the background of the print.

mumzer 08-07-2011 06:30 AM

Beautiful material nice layout and just love the quilting.

Elmira 08-07-2011 06:31 AM

The second quilt I posted, the 9-patch, is an example of black with print. It's just hard to see. But it shows you what can be done with such fabrics. And I believe if the fabric is black-on-black, you can use it and it will read as solid until you get up close. So ALL of these quilts are good examples of what you can do with black-on-black.
