visited one of the local shops today & mentioned to the woman cutting my fabric----boy, prices sure have gone up.....well, she said, if you think they're high now.....wait a little.....bolts are soon to start @ $8-9 /yd & i've seen the new lines up to $14/yd and higher..... Not sure where all this leaves us but WOW, hug your stash now if it's goin' up THAT high! i guess my stash just got more valuable!......and now i have to add to it quick!!!
thanks for letting us know, that is expensive
Wow, that is horrible. I better stock up now.
That will sure leave a lot of quilter's out of the fabric shops. I already don't buy that much snice its gotten so high. Afriend of mine as been upset about if for the past couple years. Now she really will be P--d
Here in Canada those prices would be SALE prices. Nice quilting cottons start at $15. I am unemployed at the moment so I thank God for my stash!!!!!
They've been that high here for a year or 2. One LQS is $9.99/yd. the other shop is $8.99/yd. That's why I don't shop at them but maybe once a year. :)
Unforturnately I see the end of LQS...unless they rely on lots of other things to make it. Selling only fabric...well, it will be really really tough!
some of the fabric i see online is less expensive than going to the local shops--unfortunate--i see a LOT of shops will be going out of business due to the price increase.
14 a yard?? OMG i may quit sewing if that happens!

I tell you Ladies, we will all have to go back to using whatever we have like so many of our mothers and grandmothers.
Sometimes I find some good fabric pieces at Value Village(thrift shop).
I guess it's time I start using more muslins along with my stash to stretch it out. I hope the locals can survive. Althought I do shop online often to save money, I do like to do what I can to support my LQS too.
Boy that is not good news. We have a place in Maine called Mardens that sells all kinds of brands fabrics for 2 anfd 3.99 a yard. Guess I will start stocking up. Thanks for the info. Guess we will have to not be so fussy and color cordinating anymore like our grandmothers. $%$%^%&^$!!!!!
i think you're right........life's funny, isn't it....

They say after the first of the year taxes are going up and up so better buy now.
Think I will get myself that embriodering machine that I have thought about for so long. Either now or never ND with W=M not selling fabric , other places can charge what they want. :hunf: |

I guess a lot of us won't be buying very much fabric, but shopping from our own stash!! I'm on disability and I CAN'T & WON'T pay those prices...

I was told by some of mu suppliers that fabric world wide will be going up 4-6 percent. YIKES!! New pricing to start by September
I am already checking Craigslist every day, lol, and yard sales when I can get to them, its hard to find fabric at yard sales!
I am going to my favorite store tomorrow, so happy about that, great prices. Think I will stock up more than usual, one can't be too careful these days ya know :)
Then I am off to St Louie for a visit, and planning on stopping in at the "quilted fox"! I won't pay those prices either, too expensive for me! |
Wish we could buy good fabric for $8-9, they start at around the $13 mark for better quality fabric in Australia in our national craft chain store, more at the specialised quilt shops. Was so happy when I found quiltshops.com. Can anyone recommend any other online site? So glad I have a stash too.

I have just about given up on my LQS. I buy mainly online where I can look for bargains (in my pajamas).

Oh, my...I generally pay about $10 now. My daughters both sewed while in 4H. I happened to overhear a comment from another mother something to the effect that 'only poor farm kids do 4H and sew'. I really came up for air on that one and let her have it by telling her exactly how expensive it really was for my daughters to have the 4H experience! Fabric is expensive. Patterns are expensive. Trims are expensive. When my DD made a beautiful wool coat for her final year in 4H sewing project, we had much more money in the coat (excluding her time) than what she could have bought a comparable coat in a dept store.
With 2 in college right now, I do watch my spending very carefully...I find I just don't buy on a whim, I have to have a specific project in mind. And, like many of you, I am trying to finish things before I start something new. I imagine these higher prices will just make us all be more smart with our purchases. |
Makes you kind of wonder if the fabric makers want us to give up quilting. I also see a lot of LQS going out of business with price hikes like that! Too bad as small businesses are the backbone of this country!
Down at the Community Action Building, they have alot of free stuff. Old clothes. I'm going down there and see what they have. I'm not buying anymore fabs unless they are on sale. I need a computer worse, lol.
Not sure where you live, but our LQS prices are $9.75 - $10.50/yd already. Southeastern Wisconsin.
I quess the old saying is true "back to basics". We will find a way to keep on quilting.
went to Lancaster PA for a mini-vaca. There was a lady in one shop saying she is from UK where fabric is $27/metre. Considering a metre is only 3" more than a yard, that's pretty darn expensive.
I found the fabrics were $5.99 to $6.49 a yard. I had a set a budget before I left, so I only purchased what I was looking for specifically. OK- so I found a few to make a throw for my dd and her hubby, but I was very well behaved. Can't wait to go back again- so many things we didn't get to see. |
I am so fortunate to live next door to my LQS. We are rutal and she stocks a lot of Mill Ends and from fabric stores going out of business. She also has name brand fabs but I can usually find what I want if needed. Of corse mostly I shop my stash and just have to buy occassionally. lol I saw the hand writing on the wall and bought fab before I retired .
I agree but now that Joann's has higher quality fabric available, I've started buying those fabrics and use my coupons. I can't buy several colors every trip but as soon as I get more coupons, I'll go get another coordinating fabric (hopefully they still have it). I've learned that quality fabric is much better to work with. Don't want you to quit.

What I do have, though, is a nice stash. Not overwhelming, but large enough that I can make several scrap quilts, which I love. It's the result of that lack of willpower - when on shop hops, I bought lots of things I didn't really hae a plan for but loved. Now there's enough that I can put them together and have great scrap quilts. Also, I am lucky to have a lot of shops locally, including a couple of Mennonite stores that sell at great prices (under $6/yd for lqs fabric). |
