brand of fabric

Good morning everyone. Hope you are all doing well this week? I'm wondering when you buy fabric do you get a popular brand name or have you bought some of these off brands? I've been going through the quilting sites this morning and have really liked some of the prints in a off brand fabric. I don't want to spend any money on something I wouldn't keep for myself. Since I can't drive due to my fractured pelvis thought I'd order fabric online plus it will be handy for me this winter. We live in a very small town so have to drive to Sioux City, Iowa or Omaha, Ne. to do shopping, so it would really be nice for the winter to order. How long does it take for your fabric to get to your home? Thanks a bunch. Marilyn43

I love all the local quilt shop brands - Moda, RJR, Bernartex to name a few. So many choices on ordering online but you may want to look at QB sale items for great deals first. I also belong to a number of online resale fabric groups where you can get some good deals.

Sorry about the fractured pelvis....ouch!!!!

Buckeye Rose 09-03-2014 08:36 AM

Buying fabric online can be a crapshoot at best, as all manufacturers have fabrics that aren't the best quality and you can't personally check before purchasing. The best advice I can give you is to stay with a reputable company in hopes that if you do get a lesser quality fabric, they will work with you. I love the fabrics from connecting threads and they have excellent customer service.

PaperPrincess 09-03-2014 08:41 AM

I usually order manufacturers I know. If there's one that's new to me, I will order the minimum amount in a neutral color to see what the quality is like.

Thank you ladies this info sure helps. I've done a lot of online shopping but not for fabric. I appreciate your time to answer my post. Have a blessed day. Marilyn43

I have found buying fabric on-line to be a very positive experience. Fabric Shack ships very quickly with minimum shipping charges. Other fast shippers in my experience are Shabby Fabrics, Hawthorne Threads, and Thread Bear Fabrics. You will typically get a, 'your order has shipped' email from them the day after the order is placed, and then receive the fabric 2-3 days later. Other places take up to a week to ship the order, with delivery 2-3 business days later. Quilt Fabric Closeouts is another really fun place to shop. They cut and package their fabric beautifully.

The only bad experience I've had was with a place that never shipped the order and never replied to my emails of inquiry (I can't remember the name of this vendor). But I had paid using PayPal, and they refunded my money after I filed a complaint. I prefer ordering from places that offer PayPal as a payment option for this reason, plus you don't have to enter your credit info.

So sorry about your broken pelvis!!

Connecting Threads has beautiful fabric and it gets to my home within 4 days of ordering. It always has a tad more fabric in their quilt kits and they always answer any questions you might have. http://www.connectingthreads.com
Hope this helps - so sorry about your fractured pelvis.

I buy fabric on line 99% of the time, never got burned. Whittles Fabrics is a great place to shop, lots of brand names for $5.00 a yd. and low low price for shipping. They are located in Kentucky, and I get my order in less than a week!!

RedGarnet222 09-03-2014 12:37 PM

The fatquartershop.com has great fabric and I have never had one bit of trouble with them getting to me within days of ordering.

I also recommend the connecting threads site. Nice American made fabrics.

patsynel 09-03-2014 12:55 PM

I have ordered from: Connecting Threads, Keepsake, and Fabric.com. I have been pleased with the fabric from each one.

serenitybygrace 09-03-2014 02:51 PM

I have really had good experiences ordering on line. I have ordered from www.equilter.com www.fabric.com www.fatquartershop.com www.jellyrollfabrics.net www.keepsakequilting.com and others. The fabrics come quickly and are quality fabrics.

I pray that your pelvis heals quickly.

I wonder what is an "off brand". I have ordered many that I wasn't familiar with from reputable sites and have always been happy with the quality of the fabric. I look for color and pattern for my project as much as if not more than brand. But I do stick with sites I have experience with.

Purpleprint 09-03-2014 08:33 PM

I think if your going to wash a quilt alot then you need to use the best fabric you can afford. Buying a Hoffman or a Benartex or Moda etc insures that all the work you do will not be a quilt thrown away after a year because it did not hold up. I have done that because the fabric was cheaper.
If it is a wallhanging it doesn't really matter because it will go out of fashion before the fabric could ever wear out.

quiltin-nannie 09-04-2014 02:59 AM

Glad to see this post! Got some ideas of new places to shop!

ManiacQuilter2 09-04-2014 06:18 AM

I don't drive so I do a lot of shopping on the internet. I usually tend to go to brands that I know are quality such as Hoffman and Timeless Treasures. I just order last Sunday with Fabric Shack and it was in the mail on Monday and received it on Wednesday. Shipping in a priority envelope is ONLY $3.00. LOVE THEM !!

Even though I am familiar with the most well-known brands, there are other manufacturers you don't hear about so often that are no lower in quality. Perhaps you could post the names of some fabrics you think might be "off brand."

Also, you can't go wrong with Hancock's of Paducah

susie-susie-susie 09-04-2014 06:31 AM

Another place I have ordered from is MSQC and Craftsy. Both have very good customer service and prompt service. MSQC carries a lot of precuts, but you can also get cuts of fabric. I have used many of the sites already mentioned, and
have not been disappointed. I think most reputable companies will make things right if you are not satisfied. Sorry for
your broken pelvis.

I purchase a lot from Thousands of Bolts. They carry an extensive line of the Northcott Stonehenge fabrics. I have also found that you can get some very good deals on the Craftsy site. In addition to their on-line classes, they have fabrics, notions and patterns, most of which are downloadable. Plus, like the classes, the patterns go into your library and are available to you at any time after you've purchased them. Missouri Star Quilt Company has a lot of precuts, if you like using those. And if you sign up for their Deal of the Day, you will get a daily email with a one item special. I believe they have a flat $5 shipping rate and shipping is free if you purchase over $100. Plus, they have a bonus point program.

rhilkey 09-04-2014 07:45 AM

I have purchased from Craftsy & JellyRoll.com. No problems. Missouri Star Quilt Co. also has some great deals.

charlottequilts 09-04-2014 12:29 PM

It seems like there are fabric companies being added all the time, and I wonder about them, too. I have had a lot of success lately with GRS Creations in TX. They show all the fabrics from a line together, which my LQS doesn't do.

Hugs,
Charlotte

Oh my goodness have you girls ever made me an online monster. I've gone through these web sites and can't wait until I go back and pick fabrics out. This is just wonderful and fun. Thank you ever so much. Have a great eve. Marilyn43

If I were buying on line, I'd probably stick with a brand I'm familiar with. Once you heal, you can maybe find some of those brands at local stores.

Boston1954 09-04-2014 06:47 PM

I have ordered many times online, and it sometimes gets to me as fast as 4 or even 3 days. I have never been disappointed in the quality. As to brand names, when I started quilting, I did not know any. I bought what I thought was pretty. Now I realize that I am going to put many hours into something, I should use the best that I can afford.

Aurora 09-05-2014 02:01 AM

If, by chance, I purchase a fabric on line that is less than I expected, it goes into my locker hooking/rug making stash. This provides a selection of colors for other crafts.

citruscountyquilter 09-05-2014 02:45 AM

I have bought fabric on line from a number of different places and have never been disappointed. The main challenge I have is matching things as the colors are not always true on the screen to what the actual fabric is. If you are buying things from a fabric line then that's not a problem but I rarely stick to a fabric line when I'm putting things together. As far as quality and service however I've been pleased. I do have to remember to take the sticky tags off the fabric however. When they go through the washer and dryer - not good!

lizzieshome 09-05-2014 02:51 AM

I just recently discovered Thread Bear Fabrics...they are wonderful! I also use Fat Quarter Shop quite a bit and I order on Etsy a lot(have found some absolutely wonderful sellers on there). I try to support the local fabric shops when I can...but, all but one are an hour's drive away and with gas prices, time constraints, etc it just isn't possible to get to them often. When you order online..be sure and do a google check with the larger shops to see if they have coupon codes. FQS frequently does...most recently 20% off total order...for those not familiar with them they also do a Flash Sale every day around 10 that lasts for 24 hours. I also do google searches for "sale or clearance" on whatever fabric I am looking for. Sometimes I come up with some bargains.

SimpsonFrances 09-05-2014 03:01 AM

FatQuarterShop.com is my favorite. If the fabric they are selling is not quilt shop quality, they tell you in the sample. An example would be some children's popular prints from Camelot. These fabrics are popular and Ok to use but just not quilt shop quality. Great website, good customer service, and at 10:00 am every morning they have a flash sale which is usually a 50% off sale. I buy most of my fabric from them!

lizzieshome 09-05-2014 03:07 AM

Oh...thank you for this...I live in East Texas...will have to add this shop to my list to visit when in that area!

You're very welcome. Another shop is Martha's Quilting Corner in Gatesville. (I have no idea where that is.). I was desperately trying to find something, and she was very helpful - responding quickly and personally to emails. Cutting was generous. I would definitely order from her again.

hugs,
Charlotte

I love Craftsy sales. I always receive great quality fabrics at a great price. They ship within a day of placing the order.

Snooze2978 09-05-2014 07:46 AM

Marilyn, I also live in a small town in western Iowa so not really too far from you I suspect. I order online most times as we have only 1 fabric store in town and with the prices of fabric continually going up I look for deals online. Most all the online stores seem to have good quality fabrics, even their personal name brand. I tend to stick with those that have good customer service such as Keepsake, Connecting Threads, Hancock of Paducah, etc. You'll be given lots of companies here I'm sure though. So far I haven't received a bad fabric from anyone online.

hoprigmom 09-05-2014 08:17 AM

Sorry to hear about your fractured pelvis! I hope it heals fast. Sioux City is a disappointment for me to go fabric shopping. There is one wonderful store, the Heart and Hands Dry Goods Co. and that is about it for a city of that size. I guess I shouldn't complain as I can spend enough by just going there. I am very fortunate to have 2 lovely quilting stores only 20 miles away and an awesome store 30 miles away in Southern Minnesota.

I do order on-line when I need something for a special project such as a certain color of felt to make a banner for church. If I do order a fabric for quilting, I stick to brands that I have found to have quality fabric. I used to be a Family and Consumer Science teacher and would teach my students to feel the fabric and hold it up to the light. The students got to be good quality fabric shoppers.

Mom of 6 cats 09-05-2014 09:11 AM

Go to JinnyBeyer.com. Her fabric is made by RJR. Her colors are fabulous. She also has a weekly e-newsletter that one can sign up for.

I am always searching for new and different fabrics, so have purchased many brands that are not mentioned much, but have been very happy with all of them. Some of the brand names are: Riverwood, Fresh Water Designs, Henry Glass Fabrics, Frond Design Studios, P&B Textiles, Quilting Treasures and Windham. I find that I need to branch out to keep from seeing the 'same old stuff' and find fabrics that inspire me.

crafty pat 09-05-2014 10:48 AM

Gatesville is in central Texas close to Ft. Hood. I love to order from Keepsake Quilting and Hancocks of Paducah. I have also ordered some very nice fabric from Connecting Threads.

Totally agree with the above brands. Besides the sides listed, I've had good luck with Fabric Fanatics (batiks--all great brands & their sale fabrics are a steal!); The Lil"Red Hen; Quilter's Paradise(she always has Wizard of Oz fabric), eQuilter (although their web page I fine a little confusing) and Quilt Fabric Closeouts(their's are high quality fabric that is not latest line--but recent stuff!)

Quilt30 09-05-2014 02:29 PM

I am curious to know about fabric manufacturers printing different qualities. Who knows for sure if this is true.

marilyn43 09-05-2014 02:53 PM

Hi Suz, it's so nice to hear from you. The little town I live in is Pender, Ne. We are about 75 mi from Carroll. My husband is a over the road trucker so I knew if I asked him he would know where Carroll is. I know it's commonly mentioned on the channel 9 news out of Sioux City. It's so much fun meeting members that are close by as well as members way across the land. I call myself a new quilter because I've only made 3 tops and none are finished. It is my goal now to get them done. I've been having fun going through the sites that you girls have given me. Hopefully we will be in some of the same swaps here and will meet up again. You have a blessed weekend. Marilyn43

calla 09-05-2014 02:53 PM

I have purchased from Fat Quarter Shop, and have not been disappointed not affiliated in any way.......be comfortable

marilyn43 09-05-2014 03:20 PM

Hi hoprigmom, nice to hear from you. I have to agree with you about shopping for fabric in Sioux City. I haven't been to, Hands Dry Goods Co. I know what your saying about one good place is enough, I can do plenty of damage to billfold at one store. lol. I'm excited to do some on line shopping now that have several store to pick from. You certainly have the degree to know a good quality, that has to be a plus. It's taking so long for the pelvis to heal. I broke it twice. I'd rather have 6 babies than to go through that pain. You have a blessed weekend. Marilyn43
