My son is going to a wedding in a borrowed tuxedo- that is missing a button. Dutifully, I hopped on the subway to the button area in the Garment District. This time I took all you button lovers with me in my heart! Buttons on cards, in boxes, in barrels, in bags.Lots of vintage beauties. You can't imagine. At the 2nd shop I showed my sample to the saleswoman. She assured me they had that button- among millions- and walked down a few aisles to pull out an identical match! I purchased some $6 a yard 54" backing fabric and then smiled all the way home. The next time you come to NY, I'll take you there!Dotty

I can't imagine remembering where all that many buttons are located LOL I guess I need to take a trip to NY :wink: and I would love to have you show me around!!! :D:D:D

There used to be a place like that in Hackensack, NJ, too. Buttons, lace, and such in every size and shape ever made!

That area is just amazing!!

There are stores dedicated just to beads, sequence and all sort of embelishments. I went into one with just silks...to die for. At another store I saw only fabrics for men shirts. Across the street there were Indian fabrics and at a very high end place I touched a $500.00 per yard brocade. A little further south, well, more that a little, in Soho, there is this clothing store called All Saints, and this is the window display. Ladies, please, no drooling on the keyboard allowed.

In one store someone was buying a ton of horsehair edging. She said to the clerk "put it on our account". I was dying to ask her what she was making (wedding dresses?) but she was on her cell (of course)!

Ok Dot, as soon as I am down there for good we have to get together to go to the fashion district. A lot of these places sell swatches very cheap for the FIT students. Some great crazy quilts can come out of those.

Imagine what fun it wouldbe to work in a place like that!

It is a VERY expensive clothing store, but even people that don't sew go in just to see them.
