HI, I am busy making pincushions. Something that has turned into a lot of fun. I want to decorate with buttons. Also they are great for embellishing quilts, especially doll quilt size.
I find that Joann's source is limited and pricey. Where have all the buttons gone? I remember when there used to be racks and racks of buttons... all sizes; all prices and a lot of colors. Thanks for your help in advance. :-D |
My Joann's has racks and racks of buttons in allprices. Also Michaels' has a plastic container of buttons.
|
At the Hancock Fabric's I go to there's a whole wall that's just buttons.
An idea: could make your own covered buttons. Missouri Star Quilt sells kits to make covered buttons (comes with the button maker and buttons) for $1.95 and then the button refills are $1.50. How many buttons it comes with depends on the size. |
Ok Look at thrift stores sometimes they cut buttons off clothing that they make into rags they sell to machine shops,etc... Google and look for Buttons cheap...
|
Try etsy and ebay, too!
|
Walmart has some decorative ones in bags that aren't terribly pricey, so does Michaels :D:D:D
|
I would love to see pictures of your pincushions. I have been thinking about making a turtle pincushion:)

I found some really decorative ones with beads and buttons. :-D Thanks for the tips. They reminded me that I had forgotten Michael's. We don't have Hancock's here. They closed it for weird reason. Silly them! |
You might look at garage and yardsales. I used to find that buying old clothes meant great recycled buttons (often the buttons were worth more than the rest of it). I can buy an old stained button-down shirt, cut off the buttons (which are like new) and reuse them. Best of all, you usually get the correct number you need to make a shirt. None of the 2 or 3 buttons to a card thing.

Speaking of buttons, I need a realistic mother chick chicken button around 1/2" size. I'll be happy to send fabric in exchange. Please pm me.
|
Our little quilt shop has tons of "fancy" buttons that look like gold, pearls, etc., for about .10 each. Also check out homesew.com., they used to have all kinds of buttons very reasonably priced.

The homesew.com is a wonderful site. Just what I wanted. Everyone has such good ideas. I knew the board was the place to go for answers. Thank you. :-D BTW BellaBoo, they didn't have a realistic mother chick chicken button. But I will let you know if I run across one. |
I have bought several little bags of nice buttons at www.buttonsgaloreandmore.com
You can get on their mailing list and they send out sales about every 6 weeks or so. Fun buttons. |
Hobby Lobby sells them in a tube for a great price - especially when you use a coupon!
Also sometimes you can score a ton on ebay, Oriental Trading, thrift stores, Craigslist... I remember getting them in a 1 pound bag at AC Moore as well. I'm sure Michaels and the other craft stores sell them like that too - by the pound. I've been lucky that my mother volunteers at a rummage sale and has scored me bags of buttons... I don't think I'll need another button (unless it is a novelty one) for a long time! |
Thanks you guys for that info. I am a button fantic.
|
Wow, I need to keep saying thank you. Great ideas. I have tried craigslist (my DH and my favorite resource!) and a few other ideas but keep them coming because I am sure others want to know to.
I am going to try to catch estate sales (although I have only been to one, years ago). |
Http://homesew.com has many at reasonable prices.

I have used homesew.com since before it was .com! Good suggestion. I have also seen some good deals on buttons at my Dollar Tree...if you have those. Actually sorry for you if you do not as you can luck on to some neat things there among the junk.

Wal Mart has bags of buttons as well as Hobby Lobby.
|
Try this one---pretty reasonable!
http://www.danamarie.com/notions/buttons_pound.htm or this one---$4.49 pound!Search for Grandma's buttons--assorted URL ws too long! http://www.discountschoolsupply.com/ |
I buy lots of cute buttons from Home Sew, Bethlehem, PA. Their prices on things are good, but their shipping seems a bit high. So, I save up my list until I get enough items to make it worthwhile. They have a catalog that comes regularly. www.homesew.com

Go online to www.shopgoodwill.com and browse through the crafts section (sign in first, privacy is good here) and you will be amazed at what they auction off (of yes, it is an auction). They offer bags of buttons (of course it is what you get, as is) and usually it is about 4 pounds. It is easy to place a bid and they will inform you if you are overbid. I have an example for you; I placed a bid on a Blue Singer 1945 sewing machine in v. good condition, parts,(of yes and there are pictures of items being auctioned). AND I got it for $37.52, shipping included. I know this is a long post but I believe this is a good site and a great way to help others.

Nice buttons here are not cheap, up to 4 euro for one.
|
There are vintage buttons on Etsy...if I can toot my own horn...my shop is Allbuttons. It is pretty low on inventory these days, but there are lots of other shops selling for good prices too.
|
Just sent you a PM.
|
all button come off before items tossed into the rag sack.I have all my moms that she left in a big jar. Garage sales ,esp estate sales etc.
|
I work for an auctioneer and sometimes there are jars or even bags of buttons. The only thing is that they go really high. I don't understand why some people find the need to outprice you for just a couple of buttons that they turn around and sell on ebay or wherever. I use buttons on several different craft projects.

I bought 2 quart size baggies
full at a yard sale for 50 cents. Or try Flea Markets. J J |

THANK YOU EVERYONE SO MUCH! :-D :-D :-D |
There is an online button shop, wish I still had the link or could remember the name, but they had really good prices on very cute buttons. I guess a web search would find it for you.

Our Wal-Mart has quite a few buttons. I put a $1.49 packet of daisy ones in my cart but they apparently dropped out before I got to the checkstand. Didn't want to trudge to back of store so stopped at Hancock Fabrics where the same buttons, same brand were something like $2.87.
|
Try eBay...thats how I get my zippers.
|
I found all my buttons at Walmart.
|
I love some of the really cute buttons out there. I finally decided that they could be crocheted into real cute bracelets. Maybe a few for Xmas.
