I ran errands today and also picked up a new rotary cutter Friskars Comfort grip $15.97 at the local Walmart. Not till I was home did I notice that one edge of the plastic form fitted package (the hinge part) was cut open. I was a little distressed and tried to get the cutter out through just that opening. No problem, I could easily remove the rotary cutter and slip it back in through the opening. I examined it and looked if it had been used. There was no lint or anything on it and it did not show wear. Now the test. I tried to cut some quilting quality fabric. Nothing! It did not cut anything. I pushed and went back and forth. Still no cut fabric at all. It appears to me that some one bought this cutter, took it home, cut the hing part off the plastic mold around the cutter, slipped the cutter out and switched blades, then brought it back to the store. Ugh!!!!! Lets hope it is not a quilter. I thought as a whole we were pretty nice and decent people. I also think this person has been doing it more often because I was trying to buy a rotary cutter months ago at another Walmart close to my home but there was but one cutter and I noticed it was open in the same area. I did not buy it and left it. Sick! Just be on the look out quilters and check before you buy.

Good to know I worked retail for 34.5 years and I could tell you many stories....

Sadiemae 08-21-2010 05:14 PM

In Hancock's, people do all kind of really horrible things. Yesterday when I was talking to the manager she told me there were 4 cards from buttons in the yarn--no buttons and they were the really expensive ones. Someone took the buttons off and left the cards. It is really disgusting.

trueimage 08-21-2010 05:16 PM

The manager at my local Hancocks said she was being robbed blind with her rotary blades.

Sadiemae 08-21-2010 05:17 PM

Are they going to have to put things like this behind glass just to keep from being robbed blind?

trueimage 08-21-2010 05:19 PM

I think so. If they don't, they'll have to go out of business.

What is really stupid is these run reruns continually on tv.

3TreeFrog 08-21-2010 05:28 PM

I cannot believe the nerve that some people have!

I once worked with this one girl who use to go eat the lunch of other people right out of the staff fridge! She lived beyond her means and didn't care about anyone but herself!

How can they live with themselves?

Sadiemae 08-21-2010 05:31 PM

They have no morals.

That's o.k. I laughed too. After I shook my head and gave the empty cases to loss prevention.

dellareya 08-21-2010 05:47 PM

Scissors and rotary blades and locked up at our local Joann's.

C.Cal Quilt Girl 08-21-2010 05:59 PM

Use to have people open blades or knifes to peel tags and open packages, You want to say "hello can't you keep up w/the first one you stole"
Have to wonder if the carpet folks that can't find them at HF are taking revenge. (hmmmm) just kidding !!
These have endless uses, hate to admit but have scored plexi with one, and yes, the blade was toast afterwards. :)

Pathetic!!! I can see stealing food to feed a family, but rotary blades? Give me a break. And better surveillence and more security drives the prices up even further than they already are. Viscious cycle, huh? Just waiting for overworked, understaffed help to get locked items when you are in a hurry is also a hassle. Hence - I shop online a lot.

JJs 08-21-2010 08:51 PM

You do know that Walmart has a gazillion cameras all over the place - what's funny is when you see some "stupid criminal" on the evening news, their whole crime "caught on tape" with everything they did - their faces in plain view... guess they don't see the cameras, huh?

These are probably the same people who aren't getting permission to show their quilts......

BellaBoo 08-21-2010 08:58 PM

One time I was in Hancock's Fabric a day before a 50% off notions sale. I was looking through some sale bolts on a table and found packages of rotary blades, seam ripper, sewing machine needles, and some small Omnigrid rulers. The manager says many people come in and hide the notions that sell out first so they can be sure to get them. At least it isn't stealing, the items are paid, for but it was strange that people think like that.

JJs 08-21-2010 09:26 PM

People do a lot of things that would never ever occur to me - I guess I'm glad I'm naive that way...
that and the fact that no matter how old I get or how old my mother is (91 and counting) she's STILL standing behind me watching every thing I do LOL

I totally agree. If kids need food that is a totally different situation. I wasn't lucky enough to have children, but if I had I would stop at nothing to feed them. Rotary blades??? Use a pair of scissors. I am sure everyone remembers what they were made for...

That's what they do at Fabric depot in Portland. They have one pkg of everything they carry Rotory cutters, spare blades and scissors zip-tied to a pegboard right in front of the Customer service/cutting counter. If you want something you need to ask at the Customer service table and they will get it for you. Pathetic isn't it?
And you know it wasn't a quilter that took that...

mcdaniel023 08-22-2010 03:39 AM

We check all packages at Walmart before buying. Stuff is missing all the time. If you walk around you find all kinds of products opened and part missing. Batteries, underware, socks, medications, you name it.

cloudswinger 08-22-2010 04:28 AM

There was a story a few years ago of a person who had bought an expensive electronic device like a video camera. When he got it home and opened the box, someone had swapped the insides for junk, and he went back to the store to get his money back. The store didn't believe him. He had to make a very big deal about it.

ilovejunkandstuff 08-22-2010 04:48 AM

That explains the high cost of those tiny little blades.

mawmawbeve_60 08-22-2010 04:55 AM

Doesn't surprise me none....people r so heartless any more....SAD!

CarrieAnne 08-22-2010 05:36 AM

How sad! At the JoAnns I work at, someone bought a new iron, and brought it back with the old one in it. They said they never opened it, so the manager DIDNT LOOK, and you guesses it, someone bought it, and they
were so mad.
Sad that you cant trust people anymore!
LOVED the Criminal Minds story........VERY ironic!

humbird 08-22-2010 05:48 AM

Our Walmart packages ends of bolts of fabric by rolling it, and putting a paper around it telling how much fabric, content of fabric, and price etc. It is always discounted, and on Mon. it is half the discounted price. I had purchased several of the packages at different times and they just left the paper on and put it in my bag. Then one day I purchased 3 or 4 and the checker started ripping the papers off. I asked her why she was doing that. She said people started bringing the papers back in, buying the amount of fab. that was listed, then going to some corner, wrapping it around the new fab, and getting it at a discount! Yep, sick people out there!!

sueisallaboutquilts 08-22-2010 05:48 AM

My sister works at a women's clothing store and they won't spend the money on cameras, they expect the staff to watch people. Kinda hard when only 2 people are working :(

C.Cal Quilt Girl 08-22-2010 08:08 AM

Even stealing for food, they want the deluxe, had a lady bring back an item once made mention of feeding kids, was going to buy a pizza :( A couple of us bought about 10. of other items and never gave refund. Never came back hope she thought about it. One thing if Peanut Butter, Jelly, & Bread another thing when its an expensive steak. First item I'd buy for you, the second off to jail you go. Yes, stealing is stealing and not right, but sometimes compassion goes a long way towards stopping a problem. Just my opinion :)
Whew I'll get off the box now!!

littlehud 08-22-2010 08:19 AM

It's terrible. People will steal anything.

PMY in QCA-IL 08-22-2010 08:35 AM

You're right about people stealing anything. At a national quilt show a couple of years ago two "ladies" were looking through a quilting book - at least that's what it looked like they were doing. In reality one was downloading the book, page by page, on her cell phone while her friend held out the pages. SOME NERVE!! I did rat them out to the vendor and she watched for them to do it again, but I don't know if she caught them.

BellaBoo 08-22-2010 10:00 AM

The new smart phones pics are as clear and sharp as the printed page. My DD has a digital camera that looks just like a regular ink pen. She uses it to save receipts when she travels for her job. One vendor told me at Paducah quilt show that if a person was caught taking pictures of the quilts in the vendor booths without permission or hand sketching a quilt, they could be banned from the show. I take pictures of all my important papers and download to a flash drive for safe keeping using my IPhone. I also take pictures of old photographs I have of family.

catrancher 08-22-2010 11:25 AM

Wow. Who thinks up this stuff? I must be terminally honest because I don't think I could dream up a way to steal even if I wanted to.

Colbaltjars62 08-22-2010 11:39 AM

Catrancher, I'm with you on the terminally honest. I feel that I work hard for what I have and I have no problem turning in someone that steals. It's too bad that our society has come to that. But Karma will prevail!!! Maybe not today or tomorrow but it WILL happen. What comes around goes around.

Luv Quilts and Cats 08-22-2010 11:42 AM

Thanks for telling us! I will be sure to inspect packages I buy now. Never would of thought of this, but then, I don't steal.

gmaybee 08-22-2010 12:58 PM

They are probably watching the shows and getting more ideas.

plainpat 08-23-2010 04:03 AM

Sounds like a good candidate for "Dumb & Dumber"!:-)
