Can I use 2000 yard spools on my sewing machine?
I have been looking at some of the larger spools or cones of thread, they are cheaper but I don't know if I can use them on my sewing machine. I bet someone here on the board knows!! I have a Janome 6600 can I use the King Tut 2000 yard spools on this machine? Or would it be too big?

If the spool is too large for your machine you can use a thread stand behind your machine. There are many thread stands available. Some thread needs to come off the spool horizontally, while other thread feeds better if it comes off the spool standing vertical. I use large spools of thread, and some are wound differently prompting me to purchase a thread stand with both horizontal and vertical pin. You can see them here:

You can use almost any thread in any machine. Sometimes you need an individual free standing thread cone holder, similar to this one made by someone.
http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-...hread_id=17723 or check out these on EBay http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=cone+thread+stand I like the idea of the home made holder using a cd spindle. I wonder what else would work. I have one like the EBay items. For it to work, I have to get the thread up so, I raise the carry handle on my machine and let it act as part of the unit. The thread goes off the cone, up through the eye, then over the handle, then into the machine and out the needle. |
I'm using cones from Superior Threads using their holder with my 6600.

I use large spools all the time. Have a free-standing thread stand - cheapie from JoAnns. I know others stick them in a coffee mug or cut off soda bottle, etc. to keep them tame. And I have less issues with those threading through my machine (10 yr old Viking) sometimes than I do standard spools.

Your Janome 6600 comes with 2 thread holders and a telescoping antennae which are perfect for cones. I used King Tut cones on mine all the time but for piecing preferred So Fine or Masterpiece cones.

I just wind the thread from the big spool to the bobbin and use the bobbin on the normal thread holder spot.
But I don't have your machine. |
I made one of those thread holders using a CD spindle. Works great.

go to Connecting Threads they have a Wonderful Thread Holder for any size spool I Love my Birthday present from my mom I use it All the time.

I just put my large cones in a heavy glass, set it to the right behind my machine and pull the thread straight up through the telescoping antennae then over to the machine threading parts. Works great.
