I am assuming you mean the cones of thread. I have a separate cone holder (2 styles in the latest Connecting Threads catalog) and I use the cones from CN on it all the time. Works like a charm for me!

I found a wooden spool cover for my thread holder on my machine that is bigger and holds the larger spools quite well. I also have a stand alone spool holder. If you get one of these, be sure to get one with a heavy base. If you get the plastic base it will topple over and move around so you're not that much better off. I can check to see what brand the spool cover is if you want.

Ok at the risk of getting lemons thrown at me...please don't waste your money on the plastic stand-its flimsy, the tall stem didn't stay in so I tried gluing it in the little hole, that didn't last long, talking from personal experience spend the money and get a metal one.

if the coffee cup thing doesn't work for you take a spool to your drug store and ask the pharmacist if he has a pill bottle that it will fit in. I have all my embroidery thread stored that way with labels of the color and then I just take the top off and thread my machine.

I have done two things. 1. I cut a circle of cardboard, and poked a hole in it, and shoved it in the cone of thread--it worked. but I especially like to put my cone in a mason jar, or large cup behind my machine and thread as usual, it works great.
|
You can put the larger spools in a cup beside your sewing machine if you don't have an auxiliary spool holder.

I have a brother & I just put the cone on my stand threader (the tall ones that sit on table & have pole & loop) & run it on thru. Maybe put it in a cup or tall glass for the thread to spin out of.
Hope this helps....  |

there is a NEW gadget just released that is like a stick that fits on your spindle and then your thread cone sits behind your machine and the thread goes through the stick and then thread regular into the machine...I ordered them and they should be here by the end of the week!

Coffee Cup ! Who would have thought ... I'd been using double sided tape on the bottom of my thread holder ... jeez I'm glad you guys are so smart !

I use a pint canning jar with glass plant marbles (from WalMart) in the bottom to weight the jar and facilitate the movement of the cone of thread. Works great. Someone else I know also uses a pint canning jar and places extra filled bobbins in the bottom which also helps with the movement of the cone while sewing. Either works great, but the bobbins are always ready when needed.

I screwed a 1/4 inch dowel rod to a piece of 2x4 -anchored it between my sew table and wall then while shopping my fav used store I found a paper towel holder same thing only it's nicer looking put some velcro down to secure it -the best 25 cents I ever spent

I bought one of the cone holders that look like a flower. It works well with those large sizes I get from Connecting Threads and all my King Tut threads. I tried a wine bottle once but it din't work so well - hic......
|
I had the same problem. I used an empty Royal Dansk Luxury wafer can . raised the can above my above my machine and placed it to the right of the machine, placed the spool in the can. When I change thread color I leave a small amount of thread hanging and put the lid on the can. This way I can see which can had the thread I want.
|
Do you mean that it wobbles, if that is the case, you buy this wooden inserts with a hole in center that fit into the spool and into the machines spool holder. I forget what they are called. Also you can buy a spool stand , I bought a cast iron one.
|
Cut a straw the length you need and slip that over your spindle. It works for spools that are too tall for a regular spindle.
|
I've heard of using the tubular plastic container Parmesan cheese comes in---it has holes in the top for the thread to come out and you can add some flat decorative marbles to weight it down.
|
I too use the large coffee mug for the thread and it spins in the mug with no problems an you thread as usual.

I almost exclusively use the Connecting Threads Essential spools. I have a Viking Machine and it came with 2 disks; one small and one large that slides on the spool holder after I put the thread on. My machine spool holder is horizontal. These are great threads and I've used them for hand quilting as well as sewing...great buy and great colors. I was also able to purchase longer spool spindles from my sewing machine dealer for the vertical spool spindle on my machine. Don't know what kind of machine you have but maybe you can do the same. Good luck! P.S. I would not recommend the cone thread holder from Joann's...too flimsy!
|
I agree the stands work well.

I've seen the spool discs for sale in assorted sizes per package. Very inexpensive. |

For the bigger cones I use a metal stand that sets behind the machine, (just from my opinion I tried a plastic one and it was money wasted..it might work if you fill the base with cement or plaster). For smaller spools that don't fit my holder I have purchased, at a fabric store a wooden adapter that works really well, though their are some spools of thread that are smaller than even the adapter works for, so in that case I use a straw and it works wonderfully.

I purchased a holder from Hancock Fabrics it sits on the table near your machine and holds the large spools it was only about 7 dollars and I love mine.
|
There are little wooden thread cone adapters...see this link....
http://www.createforless.com/Rosecre...utm_medium=cse but before i knew they existed i made my own from a dritz adapter for the large cone, i just cut the outside pieces of plastic off and then used sandpaper to smooth the edhes, it works so well that i've never bought the wooden ones! this is the dritz thing... http://www.spinblessing.com/item.php?art=072879113433 |
JoAnn's sells a thingy to handle that. It is plastic and sells for under $5. You just sit it behind your machine and thread as usual. I presume you are talking about the large cones.
|
my husband made several for my quilting group, out of a piece of 2x4 put a dowl for the spoon of thread on one end and used a metal hanger cut off with a loop on the top for the thread to flow through cheap and works great. they are painted also

Angie Padilla uses an old cd storage container, but what ever you use be sure to use the pin on the post method to keep a stray thread from winding up in your wheel on the side of the machine. That is a nightmare you don't want, it necessitates a trip to the repair shop. |
