You can set the large spool in a glass or heavy cup that won't tip over. Place these behind your machine and run the thread thru the top.
Works just like one of the more expensive thread stands. A quilting instructor recommended this to me and it works. |
I use the large spools of thread on my machine and what I do is put the large spool of thread in a quart jar behind my machine and it works great.

I use a coffe mug for cones and larger spools of thread.
|
I just set my cone in a vase or planter thing on the floor under my sewing machine table. And it works just fine. I have gone through almost two of those big cones. Try it, until you want something more fancy to the eye.

I have several wooden spoo holders of different size tht fits over the spool holder on the machine that are different widths to accommodate the larger spools of threads.

You need a separate cone thread stand for the thread
|
Throwing in my 2 cents worth, make sure if you buy the thread stand, that it's METAL and NOT plastic.
www.longcreekmills.com has them reasonably priced. I purchased 4 to have 1 for each machine. HTH Kat |
There are several places on this board about building your own thread stand. It stands behind your sewing machine and allows you to put large spools of thread on the stand and thread your machine as you regularly would. I also heard that ones you build are not heavy enough so they don't hold the thread and your stitches get uneven. I bought one on the internet through a quilting store but can't remember which one. This is a heavy metal one.
Their internet address is www.superiorthreads.com I think it was about $15-20. Hope this helps. |
Somewhere I bought wooden inserts to slide inside those larger spools. They must have been inexpensive as I bought a couple.
XOXOXO Subee These are not the cones. I have a cone holder but these are the Connecting Thread Essentials. They are 2 1/2 inches tall with a larger hole than regular spools.[/quote] |
I have used a large mouthed mason jar sitting behind my machine, works great!

I'm just the opposite. I rather have something that looks nice that does the job. I have never regretted getting the nicer items. I got over feeling guilty when it comes to spending money on me a long time ago. :P :D :D :D
|
I put a spool of sulky or some other 'thin' style spool onto the post and then put the larger bottomed spool over it ... I've been doing this with Connecting threads large spools and others.
It works for me. |
Do you have the horizontal spool holder? My machines allow me to slide the spool onto a long spindle and put a spool cap on the spindle...works great.
I sometimes will put a thread net on these, then put them in a cup, then pull the thread up to and through a standing guide. You can also use the cone holder...just need the thread net. |

I put mine in a large coffee cup behind my machine and thread it up into the machine. Works great.

I had that problem and I solved it by making a thread holder. I took an old coffee cup, a little round wooden wheel (like you get in the craft bags at Walmart) and part of a wooden pencil (probably three inches, or so). I glued the pencil in the hole of the little round wooden wheel, then glued the wheel to the bottom of the cup. Used hot glue gun and just let it dry thoroughly. The Essentials thread fits down on it perfectly. I also took a regular paper clip and taped it onto the top of my machine directly above the cup. I run the thread through the paper clip and then just thread my machine as usual. Works for me.
|
Look for the little wooden rounds that you can put inside the larger thread holes. They work perfect. Sometimes the quilting stores have them.
|
You can make these inserts from a dowel by meauring the width inside you spool and then drill a hole inside the dowel that will fit on the machine.

My brother built his own foundry to create some jewelry pieces so I sent him a picture of the cone holder with the flowers and asked him to come up with something similar and this is what he created. I just love my tree. and it works just fine. My nephew brought it to me from Louisiana and on the trip my tree lost a leaf. He said that the tree knew it was coming north so need to loose some leaves!!!

I am sorry but I can't help you with your problem. However, I would love to know where to get the pattern for the quilt you have on our profile. I love it.

Glass jar works too

I use essential thread, if your thread holder is vertical you can put a straw on your thread holder, cut it a little longer. The thread spool will fit on the straw with room to spare.and this has worked for me .
|
havent tried it but Sewing with Nacy- suggests put the cone over your regular spool

You can get a metal thread hold in keepsake quilters book.
they work great. You just put thread on it , the holder will set to right of your machine. Then you thread your machine and go.You can also go to ebay in but in thread stand and get one there ? |
The coffee cup works but if it's still not feeding into your machine properly tape a paper clip to the back of you machine and feed the thread through that. Had to do for my Brother and it worked great.
