I agree a kid would probably like a "busy" quilt, but if the parents are picky they probably wouldn't. I agree to go with the sashing. You get all the blocks for the child, and tone down the busy-ness for they adults.
Personally, I like it with the sashing better. |
I really liked the first version as well. This is a kids quilt - meant to be loved and dragged around. If you go with the second version - definitely add in some cornerstones to pop the color. Can you use the scatter fabric as borders?

The sashing idea is great! White looks good, but red would be brighter. I don't think I would go with twin size. You could incorporate one of those larger print squares into the label, which would be fun thing for the child as she is older and sees her name.

I'm going to go with the sashing. Although I love the idea of using a red, I'll use white, greatly because I have more of that than I do my reds and I don't want to buy anything else for this quilt (see my original post about throwaway). I will do throw-to-twin sized, because I'd like something the child can grow with, plus something for the family. The original idea was a family gift to say "congrats on the start of your family. It was only the busy-ness that made the quilt smaller. You all are such an incredible resource. |
How about making one more non-blue 9-patch (the orange of the Lorax would work well), then arranging them in a 5x5 pattern with the 4 non-blue blocks in the corners? Keep the Seusse fabric as the big block -- as has been said before, kids like busy!

I really liked the first one for a little one. Kids like bright & busy. When I make a quilt for a child, I make it for the child not the parents. If the white sashing is what you go for, then maybe you could put a red sashing around the big blocks for the backing. Would make it reversible & the child would love that.

Love it with the white sashing. Babies need busy and they love busy. It's adorable. She will never get off that quilt or let loose of it. It's going to be her security blanket I'm sure! Parents may be surprised by the baby's reaction.
