Hello Ladies,
I have a very dear friend that is really into Cardianl Birds.I am hoping to make her something for her birthday which is in October, so I have a lot of time. Anything except paper piecing. That I have never tried/ Would anyone have a pattern or idea for a small wall hanging with a Cardinal pattern?

patricej 04-09-2007 01:27 AM

Applique is one alternative.

Another would be to track down photos or clipart of cardinals to print on fabric.

How perfect is Redwork for cardinals?

Do you know anybody with an embroidery machine?

Sampler including all of the above?

And, c'mon, Barb ... give the paper piecing a try, too. If it doesn't turn out to your satisfaction, just don't use it. Nobody will know 'cept you. You have months to practice. ;-)

I don't have a pattern for this, I found a picture on the internet and made it from the picture... it was a challenge and I did alot of ripping but I finally got it done.... I just pieced each strip together.... maybe you can do the same?

ceannastahr 04-09-2007 07:42 AM

live2teach 04-09-2007 07:45 AM

Country Quilter,

You did an excellent job! I love your Cardinal, it looks flawless. :D I have been wanting to piece a yellow Lab, black lab, and a chocolate lab but have yet to do it. I hope mine turns out as great as yours!

Country Quilter 04-09-2007 07:45 AM

In case you change your mind about paper piecing. I did this one from the Nov./Dec., 2004, issue of quiltmaker magazine. It wasn't all that difficult. Really!

DonnaRae 04-09-2007 08:29 AM

Hi Ruthi, I too have been looking for a pattern that was not applique. Thanks for this link. It is perfect and can be used for any time of year. :D

Country Quilter 04-09-2007 08:51 AM

Oh wow Yvonne!!! That is gorgeous! I looked for a PP pattern for a cardinal when I went to make my WH and couldn't find one for free...so opted to piece it on my own.....I love that ....very pretty!

live2teach 04-09-2007 08:55 AM

Yvonne,

I absolutely love your Cardinals.

Wow, two different ways to do them and they both look amazing. I have never tried paper piecing, is it difficult to do?

Pat 04-09-2007 09:42 AM

Hi, I've done a few things in paper piecing and really like it. You will be so pleased when you try it and look at the way the points come out & everything matches. You really should try something. The cardinal looks like it doesn't have a lot of pieces in it so that would be good to start on. Or just do a crazy patch to get the feel for it. If you have a quilt book or magazine that does a varitiy of styles you could probably fine one project in paper piecing to try. I have Eleanor Burns book "Quilt in a Day Quilts Through the Seasons" and she has a good instruction section on paper piecing. I made the crazy heart. I just got my book out & guess what!!!!! There is a Cardinal in it too. You might want to look at that book in a quilt shop. Hope I helped a little. Sure hope you try PP, you'll really be surprised at how easy it is.

Pat 04-09-2007 09:50 AM

Just reading the Cardinal info in my "Quilts Through the Seasons" & I see it is applique. Just 2 pieces for the bird. It might work.

SandraJennings 04-09-2007 10:03 AM

You can find some patterns within the Thimbleberries books or you might want to look in an art book, or bird book like one from the Audobon society and trace the outline for applique. That way you can keep it simple and use threads for outlining the shapes. You might find some ideas on the web for a more primitive look. Depends on the style you want to create. Even Christmas fabric has some cardinals you could enlarge as a pattern possibility. Good luck.

ceannastahr 04-09-2007 12:23 PM

Your cardinal are so vivberant they look wonderful. I to have not tried pp I'm a little scared to try, but will someday probably on the BOM someone will choose a simple one I hope

live2teach 04-09-2007 07:09 PM

Thanks for the advice on paper piecing. I cannot wait to try it. I am sure I will be back with questions.

susan s. 04-09-2007 07:39 PM

OH THAT IS COOL. I may have to borrow you pattern. I love cardinals too. I'm very involved with frogs at rhe moment tho. It's for a baby quilt. I'm also not too keen on paper piecing. Probably cause I never tried it. Looks like a good deal for applique but not sure about the rest.

Barb V 04-09-2007 07:55 PM

Thank you everyone for your help with a Cardinal Pattern.

Pat, I could not believe my eyes when I read your post wbout "Quilts through the Season" I just received the same book in the mail 2 weeks ago, and did not get a change to go through it yet. I just took it out and found the pattern you are talking about. Just what I am looking for. So now I will take some of the other ideas posted and draw something up.
Everyone , thank you so very much. Now my friend Judy will have something specail for her birthday in October. When ever I get one made, I will post it. You all will make it happen

Hi:
For the person looking for a Cardinal bird pattern. I just got a copy of and instructions for a cardinal wall hanging that came out in a 1994 Quiltmaker Magazine-Nov/Dec. issue. An elderly friend of mine has the wall hanging that she hangs on her front door every year at Christmas. I would be glad to share the instructions if you can't get it. I don't know what the copyright rules are so don't want to just put it online. Maybe you can contact me by private internet. :D

I am putting in my two cents. This is a pattern I found on a website. Just thought everyone would like to admire it like I do. It is called Snowbirds.

I hope it works attaching it to this reply.

Someday I might be able to do one like this, but not for a long while.

Thank you! that is pretty. ...And as for it taking a long time....you never know until you start...! Just try one of the birds in applique...or the tree...i will wait to see it.

Boo 05-10-2007 10:34 AM

Vonnie, I have that pattern or should say magazine in my stash. Thanks for sharing yours. So many patterns, so little time.

DonnaRae 05-17-2007 10:30 AM

I don't know how I found this but the other day cruisin the web I ran accross this pattern. Probably late but a good pattern anyway for a cardinal. I am going to use for Christmas. I hope this goes through. I sent it as a file attachement because I can not remeber where the site is and I copied the whole thing. Nothing said copywrited on it. Donnarae

Country Quilter 05-17-2007 11:04 AM

What program do I use to open that file? I've tried all I have and none of them worked.

DonnaRae 05-17-2007 11:26 AM

Did you hit download? Try again and if you still can't get it I will email it to you, I will give you my email address. It is good and easy pattern. it is just the cardinal block. Donnarae

Feathers 05-17-2007 03:18 PM

Donnarae:
thanks for the Cardinal pattern. I think I'll give it a try this evening. I have Cardinal block instructions but this one looked easy and something I can make and decide if I'm going to enjoy making it or if it becomes "a potholder" after one or 2 blocks. That's what happens to blocks I make and don't like or didn't enjoy making.  I do hope I like it as I may even use it for our Christmas cards this year. I like to make our cards and since the Cardinal has special meaning to our family it would be appropriate for us.

susan s. 05-18-2007 04:45 AM

I tried opening it and microsoft windows said nuh-uh.

DonnaRae 05-18-2007 05:31 AM

Hi every one. I don't know why some can open and some can not. Strange. But I found the web site so here it is for every one.

http://www.globnet.com/~flair/botm.html

And this page you go to block of the month 1998 http://www.globnet.com/~flair/index.html

Feathers, glad you like it. I have not tried it yet so let me know how it turns out. I love the idea of cards made from the pattern! Inventive you must be. :-)

Debbie Murry 05-18-2007 06:43 AM

Good website. I happened on this site earlier today looking for biblical patterns.

Boo 05-18-2007 09:38 AM

Donna, not everyone can open a .wps. It depends on what programs you have and which operating system. Most can open jpg, html etc. so I would suggest that be a consideration when leaving a file to be opened. It always is better to direct someone to the website and better for copyright issues.

DonnaRae 05-18-2007 10:44 AM

If you read my first message I could not remember the website and had already copied as WP so could not save as a jpg. Also no copywrite at the website.

I made the Cardinal and it was a fun block to make. I've decided that I WILL NOT be making it for Christmas cards.........the pieces would be so darned tiny it would would make me crazy (crazier than I already am). I love the block and will make it again. I think 3 cardinals on a table runner- each end Cardinal facing towards the point of the runner and the center block facing to the outside of the runner would be pretty. I might be posting another picture tomorrow!

Thanks for the pattern and for the pattern site. I purused the site and found a couple blocks I might like to try.

DonnaRae 05-18-2007 12:43 PM

Wow, thats beautiful. And so fast. You are good! I am definitly making the blocks now. I want to do a wall hanging, but a table runner my mom would love. Oh how to deside  I am glad you like it. Let me know what you find for the cards. I love the idea and probably now will try to do the same. Maybe if going to use a cardinal applique would be better since like you said the pieces would be so small for a card.

Boo 05-18-2007 03:36 PM

Donna, I didn't remember you saying you couldn't remember the site. Any pattern printed on a site is covered by their copyright. My message was to inform, as is my job. You are not the only person who reads these posts. I do hope that others will understand about people not having the capability to read wps files. If there was a problem, I would have deleted the post, but my intent is to inform as many people as possible. For example, if you came up with a pattern and printed it on this site, you would have every right to claim copyrights if someone took that and claimed it as their own. It appears to me that copyright laws are broader than those dealing with patents.
On the internet, however, it is just good form to send someone to a site rather than print their pattern, whether they claim copyright or not. Most of these sites stay in business by number of hits. It allows them to continue offering free patterns.
I am sure I have made this clear as mud. But bear with me, I try.

Boo 05-18-2007 03:38 PM

Feathers, for such a simple block, it sure looks great! Thanks for sharing your work with us. :D

DonnaRae 05-18-2007 07:13 PM

You scold too much!

DonnaRae 05-18-2007 07:14 PM

Besides take it off. I gave everyone the Web site.

Boo 05-18-2007 08:35 PM

Donna, never scolding, just informing. Please don't take things so hard! I love that you are sharing here. Please continue!

DonnaRae 05-19-2007 03:04 AM

Was not taking hard. Forgot the smilly. Life is too short! :D
