Cashing in on selvage fad

This is awful, shame on you "Timeless Treasures"
|
so, this is the first time you've seen this?
|
Not sure how to respond to the photo--can you please clarify what the issue is? Thanks!
|
I think it is brilliant. They saw a need/market and jumped on it.
Cheers, K |
judging by the above responses it must be fabric printed like selvages.
I expect the shame on you was said with a laugh |
I think it's hilarious and I want some! All my quilting friends would have a chuckle if I walked around with a purse made out if it.
|
That is really funny. Personally I don't like the look of selvedge stuff, especially since the toughest, stiffest part of the fabric goes together with so many seams so close together. However, I appreciate that others do like it. I sent someone a packet of selvedges a while back and have since been accumulating a new bag of them. I've been cutting in a little deeper, 3/4 or 1" wide so whoever gets them will have fun with it. No idea who I'll send them to, but maybe someone will want to trade something for it.
As for fabric printed to look like selvedge - totally ridiculous in my opinion. But a great way to make the customer pay to advertise the company name! |
I want to see what the selvage looks like on that fabric. LOL
|
I hadn't seen this before. I like it!!! Think it would work up much nicer than actual selvedges, especially with straight-line quilting between the strips.

Is TT coming out with this again? Or is this the stuff that was out a while ago and is now extinct? :) There's another one - "Bobbins and Bits" by Moda that was out recently... and I've used it in a quite a few things... I think it's cute. :) |
That's pretty funny. But it takes all of the fun out of finding "neat" looking selvedges!
(Not that I save mine; mine are all cut into tiny bits for the most part.) |
I think that's fabulous. It's a look people like, but they may not have the ability to collect tons of selvages on their own. (Or the interest in sewing them all together.)
Great thinking Timeless Treasures! |
Not really my thing but I've seen some cute things made with selvedges. I actually didn't realize it was a piece of fabric at first. If people will buy it, companies will make it.
|
I found it on fabric.com; may be at other sites as well.
https://www.fabric.com/buy/0344975/t...Gwx8TgeIvw_wcB Or Google "Timeless Treasure selvage fabric". |

Brilliant!! I love it!!! Might just have to buy some!! Perfect for the binding on my Selvedge Quilt!!!
|
I love it!
I actually have a whole Walmart-sized bag stuffed FULL of selvages, waiting on another project. The bag is so full that they keep spilling out into the floor! LOL! :D |
I think it is hilarious! :D:D And "Whew", saved a few bucks since I save all of my own selvages that have the colored dots on them. My pile groweth!!!! :D:D:D

So this must be a new run of the stuff... Some company had something like this out before - maybe 2 years ago. Glad to see this... I'll be getting some! (For when I'm too lazy to make the real McCoy!) Sally |

He say..." good idea". An old phrase of mine from the ancient movie, "Never Cry Wolf". I think it is a marvelous idea. I am way too cheap to cut a half an inch or even less off of my fabric, so no selvage projects are made by me. This fabric would be a boon to me.
|
And all the quilty gifts we could make... Pin cushions, sewing machine covers, mug rugs, notebook covers...so cute!
|
I think it's a brilliant idea and would like a purse or check book holder made out of it. What a great advertising ploy for "Timeless Treasures"!!

I've never done a selvedge quilt. I'm a little confused about how to do it. I like the 'shingle' approach, but how is it done by sewing them together? I understand cutting into the fabric a little to get the seam allowance but how do you get enough seam allowance from the edge of the fabric for the other seam?

If it's not authentic, for me, it's ugly. I wouldn't buy it. (Just my opinion). But we definitely can't say Timeless doesn't pay attention to fads!
|
Different strokes for different folks.
I have way too much beautiful fabrics to use selvages, mine or otherwise. |
never saw this, brilliant!

I haven't done anything with selvedges yet, but here's a tip: Use a foundation of muslin to piece without seams. Similar to shingling a roof, lay your first strip at the bottom with the raw edge of fabric along the top edge. Sew your next selvedge so that the "selvedge" edge overlaps the raw edge of the first fabric. Keep going upwards, sewing each new selvedge to the one beneath it. When you're done, treat the selvedges as a piece of fabric to be cut up and sewn as you choose.
Hope this helps! The first time I did this (I said it was an accident! lol) , I grabbed that interfacing just because I was trying to keep the thickness down (so the side seams of one of my bags would be doable with the selvedges) and it was the lightest-weight-anything I had on hand at the time. I buy that interfacing by the bolt at Joann's when I have a 40-50% off coupon. Sally |

It's a bit of cute and fun and that is what most people are missing about this fabric and with using selvages.
|
Good points made by all - I admire the work done with selvages by CoventryUK and others. This fabric took the creativity out of it by being pre-made. Plus it really is an on-going advertisement.
|
I think it would be cute laminated for sewing totes, etc... maybe even curtain trim or valances for a sewing room...
But, in the end, it really lacks the character that comes together from using the real selvedges. And yes... I know some people have no attraction to working with selvedges. I just think they're fun. :) |
I saw this on ebay - thought it was a hoot!
