I use Microsoft Security Essentials. It is totally free, and supported by Microsoft. I've used it since it came out, and have never had a problem.

There is no such thing as "free". What a gimmick they have devised to get us to use their product. If it's free it'll cost you.

AVG is a very good, free anti virus software. I like it much better than either McAfee or Norton.
I have used AVG for about 10 years now and it is awesome. Kim Komando "the digital goddess" highly recommends AVG. Can't be beat for free. With that said I don't know of any cleaners that are free other than their download but to use it get your money out.

This is what I was going to suggest. I have had C cleaner for a few years free from this site,and it works well.

My computer tech uses c cleaner and Hippofile is a good download source.

Ccleaner is free but there is a paid version also. I've been using it for 5 years and just downloaded the latest upgrade about a week ago.

I have a free version since I've had my computer (quite a few years now); it periodically asks me if I want to upgrade to newer/better version and I tell it "no". I've had similar issues as you describe with other "free" downloads and, because they are more annoying than they are worth, I uninstall those ones.

I like the CCleaner because it is quick if it's done on a regular basis, but I don't NEED the CCleaner; I can clean my hard drive (and defragment) using the computer's built-in "Tools" options.

I have been working with computers for 30 years at work and now that I am retired I am on it more than when I worked. I was a data base administrator and a lot of virus protection programs are free with your internet connection web sight and they work nicely if you do not down load a lot of shareware or free programs.

I hate Norton as it slows your computer down to a craw when it runs and many have had computer crash problems with it.
Cleaners are different they clean out registry files and some temp files They really are not as much help to computer response as they advertise and you can do the same thing with you window programs. I don't like them because they erase all the web sights you frequently use and you have to do a search to get back to them. Just remember the old saying if it says free their is a catch to it somewhere. JMHO
