A challenge quilt

In our little quilt group we are going to make a quilt or a block that represents a song. I would appreciate any ideas. TY head of time!

zennia 04-28-2014 02:40 AM

Do you have a special song in mind?

rootyr 04-28-2014 02:45 AM

No I was looking for a song that I could make into a quilt or a quilt block. I did one many years ago to Elvis's Hound Dog. I did a picture of a dog and everyone knew that was the song I did it for. This is a different group doing this challenge.

Carrie in PA 04-28-2014 03:11 AM

That sounds like so much fun. Instantly i thought of the Beatles, so many of their songs are visual. Blackbird could be fun, the first line is pretty recognizable and easy to see. "Blackbird singing in the dead of night Take these broken wings and learn to fly"

I bet i would pick a song no one would understand or figure out, i'm usually a bit "out there"

Turn on the radio and close your eyes. I bet you find something that's in a song you enjoy and that would probably make the project even more fun for you.

rootyr 04-28-2014 04:06 AM

TY Carrie. I am open to all suggestions.

PaperPrincess 04-28-2014 04:17 AM

Somewhere, over the Rainbow...
Itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini
One eyed, one horned, flying purple people eater (which I'm going to be singing in my head all day)
Red roses, for a blue lady
Tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree
too bad it's not Halloween: Monster mash

PaperPrincess 04-28-2014 04:32 AM

This is such a fun post! If you go to this site, you can put a year in (year you were born, graduated, married etc) and it will list the top 100 songs from that year.

rootyr 04-28-2014 04:47 AM

OMGosh, some great ideas PaperPrincess.

nanac 04-28-2014 08:23 AM

Some off the top of my head are "Going 'Round in Circles" but don't remember who sings it, "On Top of the World" by The Carpenters, "Tie a Yellow Ribbon ('Round the Old Oak Tree) by Tony Orlando and Dawn. Others could be "Yellow Rose of Texas", "Blue Moon of Kentucky" by Elvis, "Gonna Find Me a Bluebird" by Marvin Rainwater, "Run for the Roses" by Dan Fogelberg or "A-B-C" by The Jackson 5. I am an oldies freak, and my kids say I can come up with lyrics from a song for almost any conversation, lol

janRN 04-28-2014 08:33 AM

Every time I hear Tapestry by Carole King I think of a brightly colored quilt.

Billi 04-28-2014 08:36 AM

Or kids songs
Ring around the rosie
london bridge is falling down
the alphabet song
itsy bitsy spider
the girl scout song make new friends but keep the old one is silver the other is gold

Or
you are my sunshine my only sunshine you make me happy...............
good by yellow brick road
Or foot loose

But I must say the above suggestion of flying purple people eater put an instant visual in my head that made me giggle.

Auntie V 04-28-2014 08:50 AM

I keep thinking about the Rain drops keep falling on my head and the movie Butch Cassidy riding on a bicycle.

Ranchwife 04-28-2014 09:09 AM

The old church hymn - In the Garden
Katy Perry's - Roar
Baltimora's - Tarzan Boy
Prince's - Raspberry Beret or Purple Rain
Chris deBurgh's - Lady in Red
Billy Holiday's - Am I Blue
Joe Diffie's - John Deere Green
Frozen's - Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?
Kenny Chesney's - She thinks my Tractor's Sexy
Any college fight song.

bjchad 04-28-2014 09:27 AM

What about:
Down town -- lots of rectangular skyscrapers
Heat wave -- flames
Little brown jug -- a little brown jug
The rose -- a rose
You are the wind beneath my wings -- a bird with sky in motion for the wind
The eddy stone light. -- a light house and mermaid
Ezekiel saw the wheel -- a wheel inside a wheel
The fox -- fox and geese block or a fox with a goose
Freight train
Rocket man
Moon shadow
City of new Orleans -- a passenger train fading away
I am the walrus
It's a grand old flag
Piano man
Paperback writer
Mellow yellow -- could piece any pattern made of yellow fabrics or a banana hooked up to a battery. (am I showing my edge)
Teddy bears picnic --

American pie -- a pie out of red, white and blue fabrics

Ok, that's enough for me but I'll be thinking about this all afternoon now. Sounds like fun!

Jan in VA 04-28-2014 10:35 AM

I just saw this edifying video this morning, so naturally Bette Midler's song The Rose came quickly to mind.

Boston1954 04-28-2014 02:53 PM

I did one about a year ago called "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". I hesitate to show a picture because I have already posted it a while ago.

barri1 04-28-2014 03:59 PM

How about Jimmy Buffett's Fins, or Volcano or Parrot head or fruit cakes or beach house on the moon..

Chester the bunny 04-28-2014 04:08 PM

I was thinking about a YELLOW SUBMARINE The blocks would be easy, rectangle with a quick corners. A window with a person inside, and a "spout" on the top. Make the submarines heading this way and that way.....

miriam 04-29-2014 02:36 AM

Yellow Submarine?

Aurora 04-29-2014 02:39 AM

On the other side of my Purple People Eater was Short Shorts. Then I thought of Ally Oop. Brings back days at the local pool!

Hartllk 04-29-2014 02:46 AM

You all are so creative and clever! I can't wait to see what you do with this. Please post when you are done!

Hartllk 04-29-2014 02:48 AM

Alley Oop!
i left my heart in San Francisco
two good ideas from my DH

BuzzinBumble 04-29-2014 03:10 AM

All these great ideas make me want to try a song themed quilt too. I'm looking forward to seeing which suggestion of Paper Princess' you work up!

Carrie in PA 04-29-2014 03:13 AM

I agree BuzzinBumble, so many clever suggestions.

Patski-Mi. 04-29-2014 04:31 AM

How about Sound of Music .

kbeuchert 04-29-2014 04:35 AM

First thing that popped into my mind was "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"

rakerlm 04-29-2014 04:51 AM

Under the Boardwalk. Having just been to the beach that would be a good one!

Gerbie 04-29-2014 05:28 AM

My goodness there would be just a zillion choices so many that would make a darling quilt. I went to the site and checked the date I married- doesn't go back far enough for my BD lol. On that list I saw Chubby Checker's song "Let's Twist Again" if you have a tool for that. Brought back so many memories of wonderful older songs. Also if you wanted a Religious theme, "The Old Rugged Cross" .What a wonderful challenge quilt. When you post your picture, if you have the room would love to see some of your groups challenge quilts. Do you list the song you choose or your quilt or does everyone have to guess?
Someone would have to list "Teddy Bear's Picnic" couldn't say how often that crazy song runs through my mind when I remember something from childhood. We didn't have TV back then and everyone listened to the radio, and our special program "Big John and Sparky" bring back memories anyone?

oklady 04-29-2014 05:53 AM

Don't let the stars get in your eyes

Mariah 04-29-2014 07:11 AM

"Oklahoma" would be an easy one. Just spell out the words in different colors, and maybe make oil wells out of felt, attach, and the same for wheat and cattle.
Maybe use fabric crayons to color in where there is still White.
Look up on the internet the songs from that stage play; can't think right now.
Good luck! Mariah

Love is a many splended thing, lots of hearts with stars

Quilt Lover Grandma 04-29-2014 08:08 AM

What a fun thread!

mckwilter 04-29-2014 09:38 AM

Oh, what fun! I may have to suggest this to my quilting bee. Let's see . . . These come to mind:
"Route 66"
"Yellow Rose of Texas"
"Satin Doll" (you could do a Sunbonnet Sue in a satin dress and bonnet)
"Oklahoma"
"Surrey with the Fringe on Top"
"Moon over Miami" (you could have the sky line of the city with a small "Welcome to Miami" sign in the front)
"On the Road Again"
"Rock Around the Clock"
"Heartbreak Hotel"

I am officially in love with Christopher Maloney - will definitely be buying his cd! After I finish reading QB of course!

maviskw 04-29-2014 10:47 AM

I see you have already chosen your song, but I just want to say that the first song that came to my head was: Peter, Paul and Mary's "Lemon tree very pretty and the flowers are so sweet, but the fruit of the lemon is impossible to eat."
Some of the words may be wrong, but that has been going through my head for the last month.
