charity: what organizations do you donate to?
 

please share what organizations you donate quilts (or other crafted items) to.

i'd love to read about the good being done by quilters.
i think it could make for an awesome thread of heartwarming information.

I donate to Quilt for Kids.

Quilts for Kids is the only charity I've made quilts for so far.

Our group will be making feminine hygiene kits for "Days For Girls." Here's the link... http://www.daysforgirls.org/ In Africa, there isn't anything to use for feminine hygiene. They're using leaves and whatever else they can find. So the girls can't go to school during that time. And being unable to get an education makes matters worse. You can get some supplies free (including the PUL fabric) for your group, by contacting your area rep.

I make quilts for Project Linus and our local guild's charity quilts. I have given to other places, but my favorite is the Bible Camp quilt auction in my home community.

I made a few quilts for QFK, but I decided to save the mailing expense and donate to local groups instead. I belong to 3 guilds and a sewing group at the LQS, and all of them collect quilts for various purposes, including hospice, local military leaving for deployment, abused women's shelters, hospitals, and children in need. Sometimes I just do the longarming for the quilts, and other times I make the whole quilt. I don't feel that I do enough, however. One guild member makes around 100 quilts per year for children in need, and they are all very nice quilts and most are large enough for a teen's bed. Another member quilts them for her. I don't know how they do it.

I've donated several to Project Linus. Our local group has given out over 1200 quilts each year for Snowball Express. Children who have lost a parent in the military are invited to this free event. Every child goes home with a quilt.

I've also donated a few quilts to my daughter's High School band that sold for a nice amount of money to help with band expenses.

I prefer to keep my donations locally.

I make quilts for Camp Reach 4 the Sky which is a summer camp for kids with cancer.

My quilt guild makes quilts for AASK -Aid to Adoption of Special [needs] Kids. This is an organization that helps these special kids who are in foster care. In foster care the kids can lose everything they have: toys, books, cherished items, etc. However, they keep the quilts. I know because on of the ladies I taught quilting to had an AASK 20+ year old Down's syndrome in her home - she was her caretaker.

The church based quilt group makes quilts for a lot of organizations. Each year the organizations put in their requests and we try to [and usually do] fill their requests. One year we had 18 organizations. The Saturday before the Tuesday Distribution night the church sanctuary is decorated with a whole lot of quilts, even if many are folded. It is awesome.

Another church group I used to belong to made prayer quilts.
