Cheapest online stores for fabric??
Hi there,
I am completely new to quilting and also this site, so wondered if anybody has any suggestions as to where I could purchase some relatively cheap materials online? I have heard they are quite expensive in store, so if you could share your fav online stores that would be fab :) Thanks! :) |
My goto online store is Connecting Threads. They have great quality for the price. Prices generally run from $5-6/yard for the basics, with batiks running a couple dollars more. They also have great sales on fabric and 30% off of batting several times a year. Free shipping with orders of $50 or more.
Connecting threads is my favorite too.
Marshall's Dry Goods and FabricShack are good as well (especially for sales). I've also had good luck with Fabric.com.
www.thousandsofbolts.com is also a good source of cheaper fabric that is good quality.
But, from your original post you said, "I have heard they are quite expensive in store", which leads me to think that you haven't bought much fabric. If I were in your shoes, I'd head to the nearest 3 or 4 stores with fabric and check out various fabrics and learn something about fabric before starting to order it. |
I have found many new favorites from the Quiltshops.com site. If you find some you like, you can sign up for email notifications of sales. Most have sale or clearance sections too. That said, here are my favorites and my first few choices when looking for great quality fabric at decent prices:
Thousands of Bolts - http://www.thousandsofbolts.com/index.cfm Quilt Fabric Closeouts - http://www.quiltfabriccloseouts.com/ Stitch-n-Frame - http://www.stitch-n-frame.net/ Over the Rainbow - http://www.overrainbow.com/ Bali Batiks - http://www.balibatiks.com/ One thing to keep in mind when shopping is that there are many stores now that price their fabric by the 1/2 yard. Also, they do vary from store to store on what the minimum size cut is and shipping can vary greatly. Most places will ship flat rate priority mail, but some go by total price of the order. Just be sure to read carefully before you order. |
One of my best discoveries has been Fabric Outlet on Facebook. She runs sales each weekday and her prices can't be beat! She ships really fast and her selection is fantastic! Check it out!
Add Whittles Fabrics to the list!
I like Quilt Fabric Closeouts and Pink Chalk fabrics. Also, I've found great deals by typing "cotton fabric remnants" into the search slot of eBay and Etsy. Recently got a fabulous bargain on some Asian fabric remnants that were sized like fat quarters. Just $2.36 and $2.50 shipping for the lot.
Whittles is Great! Most fabrics $5.00 yd. and their shipping is fantastic. All QS quality fabric.
You haven't been to a fabric store or quilt shop yet? You need fill up your gas tank and start driving. LOL. Fabric is easy to find online. All online fabric shops have clearance sales. I buy from many different ones. In the Links and Resources section sales are always listed. I buy a lot when I find a great sale.
Throwing in my vote for Thousands of Bolts: large selection, good prices, good quality, and you can sort fabrics by "theme"; you can also select fabrics and audition them with each other, and in a block

Yes, I would agree that it would be best for you to visit several stores to educate yourself about different types of fabrics. Just by touching you can get an idea of quality of weave, etc. is. Enjoy!
If you're in the US, there are many stores which carry inexpensive quality fabric. Hobby Lobby is my favorite. Much of their fabric is consistently 30% off the price on the bolt, which makes it very affordable.
I have always had good luck with Thousands of Bolts too. Fabric Shack is also on my favorite list.
connecting Threads is the best priced quality fabric you can get.

Never by 'cheap' quality fabrics. You will make cheap looking quilts. Find a couple places that has 'good'
quality fabric, but has great sales. This way you get good fabric for reasonable prices. I buy from Ericas (Indiana) and fatquartershop (Texas). Both places have great sales with fabric 40-50% off. This is quilt store quality fabric because these are quilt stores. Sign up for the newsletters and you will be notified when they have sales. Choose a couple quilts to make and purchase only fabric you need for these quilts. That way you don't purchase fabric you may not use. Happy Quilting :) |
I've gotten into lots of trouble by shopping the Web Sales on the Hancock's of Paducah site - name brand fabrics at closeout prices of $3-$7/yd.
I just received an order, from Thousands of Bolts. . . and am mostly thrilled with my order. Just be careful to notice the fabric brands, you order! I ordered and am very happy with Studio E, FabriQuilt, South Seas Imports, Benartex (my favorite of the bunch), and In the Beginning. The only one I'm (very) disappointed in, is SPX Fabrics. That last one is very stiff and doesn't even feel like cotton. Will wash it and see what happens . . . but I predict a lot of fraying, judging by the look/feel of it. They were all fairly inexpensive! :)

I love connecting threads....Welcome to the board....

On Ebay is crowes nest quilting, i love them, their fabrics are all name brands, their service is great and shipping reasonable. Her fabrics are mostly discontinued lines, but a lot of the time she carries most of the patterns that were in a particular line. I have really built my stash using her fabrics.

Welcome from North Carolina, you will love this site. There is always an answer for each question you ask. Great people here and very smart. I have ordered from Connecting Threads and like the items I got. Good prices on the thread when it is on sale.
Wow! I am so glad you asked the question.. I am getting all kinds of good names to go shopping at :)
I would sign up for newsletters. Fabric.com, Hancock Fabric. com, Hancock of Paducah.com and of course,
Connecting Threads.com, Keepsake quilting.com. Plus, any others you can find. Just Google online quilt shops fabric. Then, you'll get all the sales directed straight to your email box. Then, sit back and enjoy. |
Beverly's.com is my favorite for quality and variety of fabric (I love their panels) prices are not too bad!
FabShopHop.Com is a great place to sign up. They have contests each month and it allows you to purview many many shops and sign up for their newsletters. There are free patterns at many of them and amazing offers.
Connecting Thread is my favorite. I also buy all my thread from them. They have really good prices & sales most of the time. Can't go wrong with them.
Check out these sales! http://www.thousandsofbolts.com/inde...category_ID=18

I like Connecting Threads, Thousands of bolts, and Missouri Star Quilt co
Another way to add to your fabric stash is to go to garage sales and purchase all cotton shirts or dresses. Learn from fabric stores, quilt shops, and the internet. Feel the fabric it is a way to tell you how it will handle. Welcome to this board. Hugs
You don't show where you're from but if you're like me you don't have a fabric shop within 30 - 50 miles. Newport, AR WalMart has a good selection of fabric and I shop there some. On line is my go-to place to shop. Men's cotton shirts is definitely your least expensive bet.
I've bought a lot of fabric, bundles, and kits from Connecting Threads and have been totally satisfied with every order.
My second favorite is: http://www.crazyquiltgirlfabricshop.com/ Her prices can't be beat! :) |

Hi and welcome to QB and to the world of quilting!
I love Connecting Threads! I also order from fabric4less.com...most of the fabrics you must buy the whole bolt (usually 15 yards) prices are mostly $3.25 a yard...but they also have an area where you can buy "flat folds"...this is usually several coordinating fabrics, 1-6 yards of each, $2.50 a yard last month when I ordered some. Whatever you don't end up using/wanting you can sell. They also have batiks ($3.98-$4.35 a yard) and wide backing fabrics ($5.75 a yard). You do have to create an account (free) to see the prices, etc. but this was as easy as signing up on any site. Here is a link to the site: http://fabric4less.com/ Regards, K |
I recently shopped at fabric depot.. Got a good buy on some templates...didn't buy fabric this round

And Whittles is even less if you can visit the store in person rather than online.

Definitely Connecting Threads!!

I am very lucky that our local quilt shop is always having sales on fabrics in order to make room for new lines of fabric to come in, this past weekend all fabric including batiks were $4/yd and end of bolt price was $3 yard. We have a group of us that quilt there once a week and anything we purchase is 15% off so check your local quilt shops for their sales and specials you can get a good discount on quality fabrics if you watch their sale offering, and you come home with your fabrics no waiting for them to arrive or shipping charges. In order to compete with onlines sales and prices most of our local stores offer many opportunities to purchase good quality fabric at a discount.
