Curious to know if anyone else loves vintage chenille bedspreads as much as I do. Cotton ones, soft, takes you back to your childhood. anyone??

craftybear 06-17-2011 02:51 PM

yes, love them

erstan947 06-17-2011 02:52 PM

I don't have any but I love them. I never had one in the day.....couldn't afford one. All I had was crummy old hand made QUILTS!!!!!LOL:) Poor me....not. I still would rather sleep under a quilt than a blanket.

Dotha 06-17-2011 02:52 PM

I have a salmon colored old chenille bedspread that was my grandmother's. It takes up space but I know that I probably won't do anything with it. What to do, what to do??

amma 06-17-2011 02:53 PM

I had a couple of these growing up, I loved them too :D:D:D

TonnieLoree 06-17-2011 02:53 PM

Umm. Not really. They are beautiful for those that know how to treat them. But, they are not for me. I'm sorry, but they remind me of my elderly grandmother who used to poop in her bedding and I got to wash it.

valsma 06-17-2011 02:54 PM

I really like the look of them now. When I was a kid I would sleep under one when at the grandparent house in Bellingham, but I didn't appreciate them then.
I actually saw a pattern in a magazine once that showed how to make a Chenille quilt, it quite facinated me on how it was made. Now I don't remember where I saw it, I wish I did.

pjaco 06-17-2011 02:55 PM

I have several, just something about them. Wish I had one with a cowboy or something cool like that. I do have a couple with peacocks and maybe a basket with flowers. Some in real need of repair. I should have a lot of beds ! so crazy !!!

pjaco 06-17-2011 02:56 PM

Not a pleasant memory, I imagine. Old people were quite scary to me as a kid.

Oh my gosh YES...My grandmother had them on her beds and we loved laying on them when we would visit.

Ramona Byrd 06-17-2011 03:00 PM

I'm still wearing an old chenille house coat that my mother had for many years..and I'm 77 now. No telling how old it is, but it is one warm garment!! It has wide sleeves, waistline with a built in belt, long to the floor and flowing. No skimping on fabric with that one. Sure wish I had another couple of them in other colors, this one is a faded pink. Might dye it soon because I'm not getting rid of it soon, also one daughter has her eye on it!!.

irishrose 06-17-2011 03:20 PM

Can't have them on the beds - they are dust catchers, but I love the look. I have a white one from a sale of some sort that I want to repurpose - a robe, maybe. I have too many jackets.

paulswalia 06-17-2011 03:22 PM

Oh ya - they vie for space at camp with quilts!!! I have 3 that were my grandmother's and love them all.

dixiebelle162002 06-17-2011 03:25 PM

I really like them, but I don't own one. I have a baby picture of me on one with a huge peacock design.

sewcrafty 06-17-2011 03:40 PM

Oh yep!!!!! In fact, I just found a technique to make a chenille spread.

Tink's Mom 06-17-2011 03:43 PM

I have many...including the ones that were for cribs...I repurpose them into quilts that I sell at the craft shows.
Just love them
I don't cut the perfect ones, I just can't do it...I only use the ones that need some love..

kriscraft99 06-17-2011 03:44 PM

oh I do :) I have a whole closet full of them and I make baby bibs and sometimes patchwork quilts from them. The are so soft

nyelphaba 06-17-2011 04:40 PM

Love them. I look for the at the thrift shops.

sak658 06-17-2011 05:35 PM

I have one on my guest bed now. It's the double peacock, great shape. I have a blue and white one made into a jacket. Now that's neat. When grandson goes home, and I put the spread back on the bed, I will take a pic and post it. I love them...Didn't know they were dust catchers....Huuummmm.

annyroony2 06-17-2011 05:38 PM

Yes I love them!!

ljptexas 06-17-2011 05:40 PM

Yeah, I do but the ones today are so thin & the good qualtity ones are toooo expensive. I found 1 at a thrift store for $6, was so excited, wanted it for my queen bed. It was white, bought $12 worth of blue dye & turned out so pretty but after dying & drying discovered it was only twin..!!! It turned out soo pretty but am using it on a twin I have.

lol,you are tooo funny

oldswimmer 06-17-2011 05:43 PM

I love them, and have many. I started collecting them for our guest bedroom that has two twin beds. Finding a matchint pair was always fun! Now I have several totes with nice spreads in them. I am waiting to finish off one guest bedroom, and will use them in there...along with quilts!

irishrose 06-17-2011 10:23 PM

sak658, I had two daughters with severe allergies and a son with dust allergies. The girls' allergist said definitely no chenille bedspreads. The fluffy parts do catch and hold dust.

amazon 06-18-2011 12:00 AM

Yes, I love them. Found a beautiful cream one at a yard sale, ask how much, lady said "How about 2 bucks, I about fainted and grabbed it up,lol.Have bought a few that were damaged, going to repurpose them, but I can't bear to cut them.

pjaco 06-18-2011 02:48 AM

Thanks you guys ! It's nice to know I'm not the only "collector" of things that give me comfort. Makes me miss the simple times, you know ?

:D What a Deal !!!

pjaco 06-18-2011 02:52 AM

I know what you mean. I swear, I have one that must weigh 20 lbs ! It's yellow & white and I have thinner ones. I guess they only had double beds back then, nothing larger. Some of mine are so worn but I still haven't cut them, maybe sometime later. I've got tons of "Later" things to do..you'd think I'd quit going to the quilt shop, but so inspiring !!

I would like to see pictures of what was made out of them. I used to pick the fluffy parts off mine - it got naked... mom tossed it...

the old one 06-18-2011 03:13 AM

Yes, chenille bedspreads are lovely, we have a white one, only about ten years old, that goes on our bed when I want to showcase an old quilt that does not fit a king sized mattress. First the white chenille covers the bed, then the oldie is spread diagonally--and sometimes I use the chenille spread alone, to accent my quilted throw pillows, whose colors don't look nice with any of our quilts. A few years ago, there was a big fad for sewing pull-over shirts cut from old spreads, never did that . The bedspreads were a popular wedding gift here in Iowa, for many years. And that's probably more than you wanted to know. piecefully, the old one

sueisallaboutquilts 06-18-2011 03:35 AM

Love them now, hated them when I was growing up LOL

drdolly 06-18-2011 03:38 AM

My mother had one, before she died she gave it to one of her sisters. I think my mother didn't believe any one of us kids wanted it so she gave away. The aunt had a lady make three bears from it and each of kids got a bear from it.

ConnieF 06-18-2011 03:40 AM

Yes love them. I probably have at least 30 of them left... I used then for tops like dolman sleve tee shirts. and crafts... but the really good ones use////
ConnieF

piepatch 06-18-2011 03:56 AM

I love the chenille spreads. How about chenille robes ? Anybody ever have one of those ? I had one once and loved it.

Val in IN 06-18-2011 04:43 AM

LOVE them, I don't have one but my grandmothers did. Soon as I find one in a color I like, I'm getting it.

pjaco 06-18-2011 04:55 AM

Espec the ones with flowers, or something special added, not just plain. Comforting

psychonurse 06-18-2011 05:13 AM

My neighbor gave me 3, they did not want anymore. They are in very good shape, off white in color. Gave one to my SIL, and kept 2. I will have a need for them someday.
Right now, they are folded up and lying on the floor in my sewing room, back in a corner.
Lucky me.

buddy'smom 06-18-2011 05:15 AM

Oh, I love them!!!

lillybeck 06-18-2011 05:20 AM

I love them but have never had much opportunity to have them.

Dakota Rose 06-18-2011 05:21 AM

Love them but don't have one. In the late 60's & early 70's when we drove from the south to upper mid west to visit family we use to see them for sale in yards along the road. Loved to see all the colors and patterns. Then, along came the N/S freeways and haven't seen many since. Old Country Store has them but they are expensive.
