Well I have been on the task of sorting my stash & supplies. My gosh I didn't know I had so much stuff. It is getting plum scary. I spent most of Sunday afternoon rolling lace & tying it together, shorter pieces went into ziplock bags. Some were at least 10 yds bundles. I know I have some that may be 30 yrs old. Been trying to get all the christmas seperated from rest of stuff & that box is growing like rabbits. You really don't know what you got till you do this. I dare say I have enough stash to keep me busy for 4 quite a few years. One lady the other day said she spent $3000.00 last year alone. Houston I think we have a problem. What dear, no that isn't new, just been laying around a while.

My hubby was home sick last week....and I came home from Joann's with a bunch of flannel and a couple from the closeout tables....I forgot he was home! Just walked in and he said " and I suppose that these fabrics just wanted to go for a ride?"...

Why yess dear. Had to match thread you know.

Dingle 01-25-2011 08:36 AM

I try to keep mine cleaned up as I go. I always make sure everything is where it needs to go after I'm done with a project so I have a clean area to start the next one. This weekend I bought another load of fabrics that I have no idea what I'm going to do with it. WM is getting ready to do their summer line of fabric and have the fabric marked down 25%. It should go down to 50% this week so I'm watching for that. I'm beginning to think most of us on this board could be on Hoarders just for our quilting toys.

My DH never asks or says anything about my stashes, he just laughs and says as long as it makes you happy.

Your DH sounds like mine. He says he just wants me to be happy.

ontheriver 01-25-2011 09:22 AM

I spent all weekend reorganizing and moving things around in my sewing room. Wanted to make more room for more stash. Going to try to hit some sales and stock up before prices are way out of range. My BF put up a long shelf above my windows to hold things I don't use alot. It made a big difference in giving me space. My BF does not say a word about anything I buy that is quilting related, he will even go with me and help match colors or find a specific fabric. In return, I do not say a thing about how many tools or lumber he buys for his woodworking hobby. I just give him lists of things I want him to make me, LOL.

Mine says I am like that commercial for IKEA where the lady drives up in a tractor trailer yelling they're having a sale, I'm going back for more!!!!

I go To The Sea To Breathe 01-25-2011 09:27 AM

That is too funny you all.

bamamama 01-25-2011 09:27 AM

During a project my room is a mess, but I clean and organize after every project. Like cleansing the pallet before tasting a different wine.

DeniseP 01-25-2011 09:28 AM

Welcome to the club, sweetie! I've cleaned out stuff and then taken it back out of the give away pile. It's an illness and the sooner you face it, the better off you will be. Remember! the one who dies with the most wins!

DeniseP 01-25-2011 09:28 AM

P.S. I can't sew when my sewing room is clean, I need the chaos.

That's me to a tee! I love a good sale.

I have thrown away scraps only to pick back out of the trash. I did cut up some old lace that was unuseable to tie up other lace strips. A few years ago I gave about 3 big garbage bags of fabric to a ladies church group that sews for missions because it was stuff I would never use & I still got stuff. My name is Debra & I am a fabricaholic.

MoMiMi 01-25-2011 12:03 PM

Is there such a thing as a scrap-a-holic? I can pass up fabric on the bold, but a bag of scraps for 25 cents !!!! WOW, get out of my way....here I come with my quarter.....

brenda21 01-25-2011 12:16 PM

must be because it's the start of the new year that we're all straightening up and cleaning the stash and the sewing rooms...preparing for another year of it haha...hubby asked me if I thought maybe I could "destash" the bedroom closet!!

scisyb220 01-25-2011 12:29 PM

OK, you ladies got me moving & I finally re-organized the den into a sewing room. I found an office chair for $5, got new handles for the desk for only $.94 each, and am working on getting the fabrics & things orgranized so I can swing into action whenever the "urge" strikes! Thanks for getting me motivated. I'm really trying to reuse/repurpose as much as I possibly can. I make trips to thrift shops when I'm looking for something to use in there. Thanks again. :-) S

jbud2 01-25-2011 12:53 PM

I saw some fabric online clearance but I just got some 2 weeks ago that my husband saw come in the mail. I thought for a moment of ordering what I wanted and having it delivered to my sister. Then when I go visit her and come home with stuff, I can say my sister gave it to me!! (I pay the bills. . . . ) Would that be too sneaky??

quilter68 01-25-2011 12:57 PM

jbud2

Yes!

amma 01-25-2011 01:07 PM

I need to get busy and do some cleaning and rearranging too... LOL I know if I do, I will have more room for some of that fabric that has been screaming my name :D:D:D

You just made me feel better...I thought I was the only one! In fact, just this last Sunday, a friend and I went to the LQS and she had to shame me out of digging in the scrap bin that was $3 for as many scraps as you can get in a sandwich baggie....but I left happy with my baggie stuffed full!

I went to a garage sale a few years ago and inside the garage was tons and I mean tons of double knit fabric - tables and tables piled 3 foot high or higher with fabric. I heard the "lady" say to a customer/friend that "daddy let mother buy all of this fabric because it made her so happy".

Jackie D 01-26-2011 04:46 AM

I straigten my sewing room after every project but deep clean sort re-fold a couple of times a year. Afterwards I can never find anything!!

bevysue57 01-26-2011 04:55 AM

A friend once helped me move to a new house.....He was heard to say, I have seen more fabric and yarn before....but only at WalMart!

That's what I do. I like to start with a clean slate. After all you don't start cooking a meal with a messy kitchen (at least I don't). I usually have a stack that is the next project. Right now that seems to be a couple stacks, so I have to get at that and get it put away so I can focus on the quilt at hand.

pieces 01-26-2011 05:34 AM

I keep my sewing room cleaned up as I go. Putting rulers away after cutting. Making sure threads get in the trash, etc.
If I clean as I go and put things away as I use them then the clutter doesn't acumulate.
After finishing each project I clean/oil my machine and vacuum
the carpets. I fill out information in my journal. If its a charity quilt and I have quilted it I take a picture for my journal.
If I will be taking it to my longarm quilter I wili hang the quilt/backing up in the closet.
So when I start a new quilt my sewing room is clean
and I'm ready to sew.

Fortunately - I see DH's car in the garage first - & wait 'til he's asleep or leaves to empty the car! ( I also pray he doesn't go into the garage & looks in my car! )

You are who I wanna be when I grow up!

Debra Mc 01-26-2011 06:59 AM

Well I'm doing really well. I have all the interfacings seperated & in big zip bags. All the stablizer back in right place. I have bought the clear vinyl in small lots from the remants pile at Walmart for a while. I didn't know I had so much till I got it seperated. Now that is all in it's place. I hope today I can finish the job. I have 12 Christmas stockings that I made last Jan or it may have been the year before that all need names & cufffs on. They are for Mom's house & I promised her I would get them done before next Christmas. I am doing better about the threads on the floor ever since I made a pinchushion with the thread catcher bag. This is really a neat invention. I promise I am going to do better this year about keeping my place cleaner. What got me started was Dh needed some file folders & I had to look in a lot of different places & they were in the house all the time. Ha.

rilene 01-26-2011 07:11 AM

All you tidy people are such an inspiration! Even though I try to put every little thing away, I seem to only get half way done before I'm interrupted. And having several projects going on at once doesn't help!

Sophie2 01-26-2011 07:17 AM

I try to straighten up after each project, however, when I do DH will come in and tell me he cannot see where I cleaned anything up. I always feel a little clutter is good. As long as my sewing machine area and cutting area is clean, I'm happy.

Mine too. I sometimes wonder if it's because it keeps me in the sewing room and he can watch TV uninterrupted.

Wish my DH would have that sense of humor - I have mine hidden in my walk in closet -that at the moment can not be walked in - can barely open the folding door - OMG

sblancarte 01-26-2011 07:41 AM

I'm moving and even though I went through all of my fabric and folded it a year ago-I'm getting rid of a lot-especially fashion fabrics. I work in a doctor's office and I used to make matching scrub tops for everyone as an excuse to buy cute fabric. We no longer wear scrubs so I have 5-6 yards of some pieces. Hopefully some quilters will come to our garage sale this weekend & help me out. I try to only buy fabric for current projects but some fabric just calls out to me.

I've promised myself I will make a pillowcase or charity quilt out of my stash at least once a month to try to whittle it down.

I had a sewing buddy who used to say that she loved her stash because it represented unlimited possiblities and she could look at it and dream.

Psychomomquilter 01-26-2011 07:54 AM

yes I cleaned mine last week, got everything organized, now where did I put that material?

imjustme 01-26-2011 07:57 AM

That's me too...lol...I have been to JoAnns 5 times in the last week and yesterday, besides JoAnns I went to Hobby Lobby and 3 LQS. And I couldn't possibly walk out of any of them empty handed. The last shop I went to is the one that really got me in trouble though. I got 2 panels for 50% off and I bought to end of bolts for 50% off (5 1/3 yds total for those 2) and 2 more yds at 50% off and then I just had to have these 2 red and white pieces for a quilt I am planning. I spent $60.00 but I got a total of 9 1/3 yds plus the 2 panels.
