Colorado Skies - borders/no borders?
2 Attachment(s)
Good morning my QB friends. Hope you are all doing well this morning. I need help deciding whether to add borders to my Colorado Skies quilt. The pattern did not call for borders, just binding, but I would like to make the quilt a little larger without, but don't want to take anything away from the look of the quilt. Thanks for your advice.

Gorgeous!!! I think may just the yellow for the border.

i think the three colors will look fine.

I always do borders, frames the quilt

Beautiful quilt! The border choices are very pretty also. Right now I seem to be drawn to quilts that are borderless. I am making a Periwinkle/Arkansas Snowflake quilt and I auditioned lots of fabrics for the border and I just wasn't "feeling it". I needed the quilt top to be bigger so I bit the bullet and added another row of blocks. It is now a good size and I am more pleased with the overall look without the borders.
I like borders - to me they frame the art/center.
Right now, I see in the magazines that the scrappy look quilts do not have borders. I love that look - it showcases the colors in the quilt, while the borders make it too busy (IMO). I would bind the quilt with the gold. Love your colors.
Personally, I'd add the borders, especially if you need the quilt to be a little larger. I made a quilt years ago from a pattern that didn't have borders but the quilt really needed a few extra inches to fit my bed with a little more drop. I didn't add any borders and have regretted it ever since. I love the quilt but it's a little too small.
Love the quilt and love the three fabrics you have chosen !
I'd go with a narrow purple, then a wider gold. That, of course, depends on your binding color.
Love your quilt. Either way it will be beautiful, but if you add a border, I would go with all 3 fabrics as pictured. I think just using the yellow would draw the eye away from the center.
Your quilt is beautiful. If you prefer the borderless look then I would create another row of blocks each way until the top is the size you wanted.
Either way will be very nice. I have noticed as well that more quilts are popping up with no borders and that is nice, too.
Love your choice of borders
Pretty top! I like the 3 fabrics you have chosen. You could add another row on the top and bottom as mentioned if you still want to go border-less. If you don't want to do a lot of the blocks, you could do 4 and place them into a wide border of the purple, one on each side. It would continue the design out to the edges and it really wouldn't look like you used large purple borders to make it bigger.
How much bigger do you want the quilt to be? It looks like your block size is 12" so if you add another row then the quilt will your top will be 12" bigger. It also looks like you are showing 3-2" strips wich when added together will make quilt 12" bigger. Do you have enough fabric and the energy to make more blocks? if not then add the 3 colors for the borders. I think they compliment the blocks nicely. I think either without or with borders would look nice. I think that the binding also will frame the quilt which would look good in the purple.
Here is what I would do if I were adding borders: Since the outside edge is all darker fabrics, I would add a narrow border of the yellow to frame the quilt. (I would not use the light blue, since it is more of a background fabric in the pattern and does not need to be pulled out.) Then do a wider border, whatever width you need to make the finished quilt the size you want, of one of the darker fabrics in the quilt. The purple is fine or even one of the dark blues. I personally like borders as a frame for quilts and I'm often ready to quit piecing blocks by the time I get to this stage in the process.
I think you are right. the blocks would do well with borders. Go for it!! it's lovely.
This is an amazing quilt! You can't go wrong with any of the fabrics for borders, have you thought of using at least two of them or three? using one as a stop border and then the other two as the borders but measure how much you need added to your quilt, and miter them? just a thought!

I really like the three color borders-beautiful work
It is gorgeous. If it were me I would put a border on it. I think it makes it look finished. Just my opinion. Your quilt your choice.

I love it and think 2 or 3 borders in different sizes would be nice

Thanks so much for all of your suggestions. Y'all are awesome! I do not have enough fabric for more blocks so I think I will go with the three borders, different sizes. Thanks again for your suggestions. I will repost after I have added the borders.

Beautiful. I love the colors love the pattern but really love the name, CO Skies!!! AHHHHHH OK enough, if you want it bigger I would add more rows. Honestly I think it will be wonderful anyway you do it I love the choices for borders. I guess I am no help.
I'd prefer this one without borders, but if you need it to be bigger I guess you have no choice.
I would make the yellow and aqua a little narrower and the purple a little wider with purple binding. I personally like a narrow border and then a wider border. Another idea is to reverse the order of the 3 border fabrics. Show us what you decide.

Beautiful quilt. I love the colors. The purple/blue triangles on the outside form sort of a border, so I think the quilt would look good as is, without a border. If you want to add a border, I think I would extend the purple/blue triangles by having a purple border, and maybe some other colors if you want the quilt to be bigger. To visualize it, try longer strips next to the quilt.

Beautiful quilt. I would do borders.
love the colors. I say yes to borders in purple and gold
I like the borders just as you have them pictured. Usually I like a narrow strong colored band first but this one will be fine without it as the gold isn't in any of the outside blocks.
I would do a real skinny yellow, maybe a flange, the the dark purple to act as a frame. That way the light blue in the blocks will pop. A border is a great idea here.

I would prefer this quilt without borders. INHO |
This is your quilt - do what appeals to you!
My vote would be for the way you show it in the picture...with the turquoise and purple for borders if borders are what you decide. The yellow is pretty, but would overwhelm the overall look.
I'm a border gal, I just like the way they frame the quilt. I think the yellow inside border with a wider purple on the outside and mitered corners would be perfect for this quilt. It's a lovely quilt and the colors do indeed look like a colorado sky!! Nice work.
Pretty quilt. I think you can add borders without detracting from the overall look.
I love all three - makes a larger quilt
Beautiful quilt...I like all three colors just like you have it laid out.
Beautiful quilt. If you want a boarder I vote for just one. either the yellow or the blue.
